Saints V Villa 4-1 Post match Chat!!

SOTONS EAST SIDE

Fantastic. Ramirez always managed to keep the ball when he was under pressure from all angles. I also noticed Lallana's extra pace as mentioned above and he also seems to have got some more venom in his shooting too.

Couple of brilliant passes from Ramirez. Lovely, lovely control. Just seemed to keep coming up with the ball even when he had players around him like a playground game!

now you can compare lambert and torres..

;)

Funny you should say that...from a Chelski fan.

I have been following Lambert since he was at Bristol Rovers and I would say there has been no better English striker than him, apart from Rooney on a really good day, in the last five years. The only thing he lacks is pace. He is top quality in every other attribute as you will come to recognise this season. This player is a mix of Shearer, Gerrard and Drogba! I am not joking. I swear on my life."

I have a bet with a Chelsea "fan" that Lambert will have more goals than Torres by the January window. Probably time to get some early gloating in while I'm ahead ;)

I didn't realise he was injured. Might explain the poor showing. I'm loathe to berate him. He's just short of pace and having been in that position I know how hard it can be to play at fullback without it. Seems strange that Dixon AND Harding discarded if Shaw is not yet ready.

Still don't know why Butterfield got a new deal. Could have spent those wages elsewhere. We must have a good plan for the fullback area, but I struggle to see it.

With Fox and Guly out of the side, Fonte proving the mugs on here that he can do it and now Davis replaced, I fear for Puncheon. This board demands a whipping boy!

Don't worry, we'll do what we always do when the team are doing well, and go back to abusing Alpine.

Well done lads a great performance...really enjoyed the game..

Glad i was at SMS and not on here....some of the utter crap on the match thread...drama queens, bed wetters and some

really disrespectful crap...

Got to admit that when i checked the match thread on here at half time it sounded like our worse display ever and numerous heads were rolling including RL.

Watched the game in full on Sky in the evening and although we were average in the first half we were no where near as bad as every one was making out on here. Get a grip people.

Villa fans! Arrogant ***ts! They clearly didn't watch us against man city and utd.

I really can't believe them ****in idiots! These people are total morons who's knowledge of football is obviously limited. Who the **** do they think they are, i really hope we give em a good tonking at Villa park too.

one win against one the biggest favourites for relegation still leaves us 30 odd points from survival. We feel like world beaters and my group were talking of top ten finishes, but had Benteke's header gone the other side of the post I just wonder what this forum would have been like.

Some of the Villa fans' comments about us being amongst the worst sides in the league have been laughed out of town, but I wonder how far from the truth they are? I've enjoyed the winning feeling tremendously, but now time for me to be a little more pragmatic about our task ahead. We must keep that second half intensity and quality up as other sides won't be as accommodating as Villa, a very poor side indeed.

Roll on Goodison.

didn't notice him leaving us exposed.

Clyne could well turn out to be as big a signing as Ramirez, I rate him that highly. That does not have to snow blind you to some of his weaknesses. We never really got exposed against Villa because of Clyne but there were plenty of opportunities and if you look at previous games you can fill your boots

aye? It'shis short passing that means we keep possession reducing the pressure on our back four.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Morgan short passing. It's when you pass the ball on under pressure to a team mate who has even less chance of keeping possession that it's wrong. Either find the right pass or create the space to make a safe pass. This happened a couple of times in the first half and the only blemish on a great performance.

didn't see that at all. The one thing he didn't do was track back, tackle or out his head where it hurts. Completely attacking. He played up front most of the game. No idea where you get the idea that he could play as a defensive midfielder.

Later in the second half, Ramirez was in front of our back four with the ball, 3 opposition around him. Thought of playing to another Saints player near but could see he was just putting more pressure on with the pass than he already had. So a little shimmy and all of a sudden he was bringing the ball clear without a hint of losing the ball. We did not lose possession because he off loaded responsibility to someone in an even worse position, we came away with the ball. Unlike previously with Morgan. That combined with his "defensive" cameo at Arsenal was brought to mind when Adkins underlined this point.

The rest of your points I have not answered because these are all just opinions and I can easily see your point of view to not need much to be in agreement. After the terrible start we have had I have been cautious in not nailing everyone to the mast because it's very hard to see the wood for the trees when so much is wrong. But as great a win as it was yesterday, it has to be balanced up in total. One reoccurring problem since Burley is that we have had problems with the midfield and getting the right balance. As with Villa yesterday, you suddenly go from hero to zero when you lose that balance, as we did against Wigan.

Any mention of dropping Ricky away from home goes down as well as that Islamic film but it does have some validation. Adkins himself saw this on the first day of the season when we lined up against ManC and echoed the reasons, it's pointless having Ricky isolated and on his own. If we cannot support him I would rather not start with him in the first half away from home and would prefer to shore up the midfield. If Mayuka could get on the end of some of Gazzinigas torpedos, I see possibilities. I doubt Ricky will be dropped now and I won't get bent out of shape if it does not happen.

Everton will be a really good test and if Clyne can add again to our midfield, it will be the first time in years where I feel we may have found a chance of a permanent solution to the problem. But don't be surprised if we see a lot of players less than average if Everton dominate midfield. One good thing irrespective is that I can see 3 other teams we can slip above.

Up and Away you mentioned balance in the MF.

Something that occurred to me and does not seem to have been picked up on was "Changing Sides"

OK so Clyne switched sides (duh)

But then look at our goals. First goal came down the right wing - the HUGE difference was that Lallana did not have to cut inside to get the ball onto his better right foot and played an almost inch perfect ball into Rickie's feet SRL did the rest.

And where did Puncheon score from? Cutting in from the LEFT, found his angle for a left footed pass blocked so cut back onto his right and bang (OK whether it would have gone in IF the CB had not got in the way is debatable.

Some have talked of AL getting a yard of pace. Well maybe IF he is coming down the right for a change he doesn't need that second touch or cut all the time.

Puncheon was risible on the left away to Leeds last year but goes from being dreadful in the first half to a standing ovation.

Could it be that we have found their right balance? Or was it just "luck of where the ball was" that found them "on the wrong side?

Of all the sublime passing, interchanging and Ricky Lambert being Rickie lambert, the most satisfaction I drew yesterday was from the performance and ease with which YOSHIDA settled in.

Made a lot of it look so easy especially when the mere basics have been looking so difficult lately.

Il say it again, these transfer window buys have been top class.

I agree, Yoshida was really good yesterday and Fonte looked much better for having someone next to him who can cover his lack of pace. Remains to be seen how well Jos plays next to him. But on yesterday's evidence a Yoshida/Fonte partnership should see us through until January when we will have the opportunity to bring in someone better to play alongside Yoshida.

A left back and a centre back, with seaborne and butterfield going the opposite way, and we would truly have an excellent all round, balanced squad.

Football is a strange ... game... like all teh team sports, it matters NOT how you play, but how many more you score than the opposition. So it really depends on what some mean by 'being the worst'... Points is all that counts in the league, so its possible that we end up an one of the 'worst' 3 at the end on that criteria but given the way we play, the goals we score, we are certainly far higher up the table in those terms.

Yes we lack te experience of some sides who know how to grind it out in te this league - and if their fans are happy with perrenial survival, but pretty much unexciting dross, so be it. The last few seasons has seen me love this side MORE than the last time we were in tehi league and that includes the Strachan/cup final side - just, because we have played without fear, attacked , yeah leakd some goals, but hey thats part of it to.

Lambert and Lallana epitomise why this side is easy to like - genuine, honest and down to earth guys that KNOW how lucky they are to have that talent, and work hard to ensure its not wasted - the spirit is clear to see and that is not just down to Nige (although a big part played), but in no small part to the players themselves and the way the club has gone about building this squad - younger hungry and smarter players that recognise we win and lose togther, and want to be part of something special.

We have no billy big boll ox attitude and that is priceless - long may it continue.

I have a very large gash on my leg from hitting the seat in front of me from Clynes goal! Couldn't believe he got his first goal for us, jumped the barrier and ran into the crowd. Top lad!

Pleased with how the side looked when Fox got a chair thrown at him as that seemed to clear up a lot of the problems we have been having.

Villa are relegation material after that, lots of very arrogant fans that deserve to be put in their place considering how poor they were (some alright fans too but most of them were very embarrassing).

Comedy highlight of the day was seeing a Pomp fan giving us abuse on the underground escalators as kings cross, needed a quiet pat on the back for embarrassing him self in public like that.

It won't get one if we play like that second half performance every week. Puncheon got a deserved ovation when he went off. When he ran at the full backs they couldn't cope. Shame he didn't do more in the first half, but he linked up really well with Richardson second half.

I'm not Puncheon's biggest fan and always fear there could be a tantrum round the corner at any time if his track record is anything to go by.

But, he is playing well at the moment and as long as he maintains the same workrate and commitment as yesterday, second half especially, then its good to have him on board (with his oar), on the bus or "in the building".

Most remarkable thing for me was the combination with Richardson rather than Clyne. In the first half the Clyne/JP link did not seem to work at all. Seperated from the other in the second half and both were a revelation.

That was a fantastic display in the second half - the atmosphere was great too. The change from Fox to Clyne made a huge difference. Ramirez was excellent as was Lallana and Lambert. If we play like that we have nothing to worry about. Well done Saints! Well done Nigel Adkins!

Agree with this 100%

Have to say Ramirez looks the real deal ;-)

It may have been Ramirez having his name sung at the end, and deservedly so, but which player has a hand in every single goal? Lambert, absolute class.

I voted Man of the Match because he was - FACT ( as all these kids keep saying)! Gaston was good, but his billing earned him the MoM judgement on here, in my view. SRL simply did nothing wrong. Not a single thing. Every won header was cushioned for a colleague, every pass pinpoint. He is a class act.

Aside from the players, I am still very, very chuffed at our crowd for letting their feelings known about NA. Pure class. :)

That was rather well timed considering our difficult start to the season and the subsequent media speculation about NA. Could only have a positive effect for NA and his relationship towards fans, players, and the chairman. Proper 12th man stuff :toppa:

Sadly, although he was immense second half, there was nothing pinpoint about his passing first half. Plenty of misplaced passes and poor decisions

Good result poses the question " why didn't we complete the new signings ii the pre-season so that we could work out our best team and hit the ground running?"

With a bit of quality around them people like Morgan and Ads are beginning to look world class and it seems to have worked wonders on Steven Davies as well. Now we need to replace Fox who just looks more and more incompetent every match, can't find a pass, can't find the man he is supposed to be marking. Adkins got it dead right at HT and transformed the team.

It's not so much Puncheon who should worry next, where is the way back for Lee/Chung and what is Rodrigues role up-front if Mayuka, Ramirez, Ads and Rickie click as the strike force?

The first match of the season, and a very good start. COYR!

This was the Fifth match of the season in case you didn't notice and the next four include Everton, Fulham and Spurs as well as Hammers at Upton Park. If we lose all four as well we might when will your season then really start?

You do always talk the biggest load of ballacks* on this forum...

Not sure why we should be worried about options and depth surely?

In respons eto your first question on earlier deals - ideally its obvious, but I suspect like most on here, we underestimate a) the amount of work that goes into setting these up, and b) as we saw with ramirez, when clubs need to sell, they drag it out to attract bigger bids so we are in limbo - sticking with it looks like its been a good move...

Exactly. There's bound to be loss of form and injury over the course of the season. No matter how well the forward unit and midfield played at times this weekend, I can't wait to have Cork and Chung back to full match fitness. I think Chung will turn out class at this level.

The typical football fan injury of jumping with your shin pressed up to the seat in front, I was very surprised to see it yesterday and could only have been from Clyne's goal.

AND CAN WE PLEASE ALWAYS KICK TOWARDS THE NORTHAM SECOND HALF?

(I llike seeing all the goals at our end as my eyesight is failing....)

This made the most difference! Had a perfect view of all 5 goals and got to watch Fox coast the game first half (instead of second) to get rightful subbed.

GET IN!

We were brilliant second half. Ramirez pulled all the strings, Puncheon put in a great shift, Lallana was on fire (except when infront of goal) and at the back we were much improved.

Clyne made an even better LB than RB it seemed and Frazer was solid. That change made the difference for me and we started to click together.

Plenty of goals within the team, Mayuka looked very sharp and the keeper was lucky to stay on the pitch.

Delighted the fans, players and Adkins showed a lot of unity today.

I don't expect anything at Everton next week but this is a great base from which to move forward with!

Sums my thoughts up down to a tee!

Great win and pleased for the club and us great fans.:D

As I am already a multi millionaire.....no bets placed:rolleyes:

My coaching in the second half definitely worked a treat;)
