Glasgow_Saint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Who eats this? I am a convert - read that Andy Murray eats it all the time (50 pieces a day sometimes) + was the most sold food to Olympian athletes at GB 2012. Thought if it’s good for Andy and Olympians’ it’s good for me! Eating it everyday now (since Friday) and love it.

WindsorSaint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Liked sushi for a long time, have either sushi or sashimi a couple of times a week... I also like kippers - but they stink the house out and repeat on me all day!! WS
Tokyo-Saint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Not a big fan but there is are a couple of great places in Tokyo. One which has massive fish tanks and they kill the fish there and then. Instead of saying what you want, you chill out, have a drink and every few minutes they shout out which kind of fish just got it. The animal rights people might not like it (don't see why not as the fish is killed very quickly) but the sushi and sashimi is as fresh as it gets. I am not at all into the generic carp, full of mayo the supermarkets pump out. The rice is dry and hard and the fish is non existent.
pap Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 I like it. Used to eat it for lunch most days. One of those things that people just don't like the idea of.
The Kraken Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Supermarket sushi and sashimi really doesn't count; all a bit bland and tasteless in comparison to the genuine article.
Frank's cousin Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Took a client to a good place in New York once.... great stuff but the bill was like $700 for 2 people!!!! struggled with the expense claim, but big Customer... Must admit nearly threw up with the Sea Urchin....
Kingsland Codger Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 A dawn visit to Tsukiji fish-market, watch the daily auction then breakfast at one of the sushi bars - one of the things to go on everyone's Bucket List. And here's a quick taster ... And like FC above, I, too, have a problem with Sea Urchin.
Patrick Bateman Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Prefer Sashimi to Sushi - especially Tuna and Razor Clam, but maybe I'm boring? I can't stand the horrible bland "Sushi" you get from the supermarkets, it's rubbish - you have to smoother it in pickled ginger for it to taste of anything - not how it should be. I could eat loads of it, but then to be full up, I would need to eat loads of it - I really love it. The best I've had in this country is a little place near Westminster - http://www.atami-restaurant.com/ - I haven't been for a while, but it was still great when I last went. Nobu is very good too, but you pay for the name there! Atami's Marble Beef is absolutely stunning too, getting REALLY hungry now!!

Tokyo-Saint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Japanese food around the world is such a rip off and for no good reason. It is like anyone that opens a Japanese restaurant suddenly thinks they should charge double what they need to. Good Japanese food is, in the most part, fairly cheap to make. Tokyo-Saint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 The problem is my Mrs loves it. Luckily in new Malden there are a few decent Japanese owned shops that tend to supply some of the restaurants in town. It still costs about £20 for two but is much better value than going to a restaurant in London with a load of Korean and Thai staff. The mrs made a mean okonomiyaki yesterday. LGTL Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 The thought of it revolts me, but I've never actually tried it. I don't like cooked fish though, so I'm guessing I should stay clear. Smelling that Yoyo Sushi place in West Quay doesn't help either.

Smelling that Yoyo Sushi place in West Quay doesn't help either. It's mostly just rolled rice in seaweed. The fish is usually cooked in western sushi. dubai_phil Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Have mates who go nuts for it. So fully understand why people get passionate about it. Me? Hate it. Can eat one of those rice ball things with a salad at a push and some thousand island dressing but no - sorry hate it. Now a perfectly BBQ'd 300g Australian Rib Eye..... Ah now THAT is perfection
SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 One of the Japs favorite fish for Sushi but is very expensive in Japan is Hirame, or the good old Flounder!!! So make it yourself. My former boss was Japanese, and used to pay me a £10 a time for under 1lb fish. Said they were about £40 each :0 at home!!! PhilippineSaint Posted 18 September, 2012 Share Posted 18 September, 2012 Best Sushi I have had is in San Antonio Este in Argentina, on a Korean ship. Waiting for the ship to be loaded the crew were catching fish off the stern and as soon as they were coming on board, cleaned and sliced then straight on the plate. Lovely.
