Ramirez

I thought Ramirez looked great. Head up, beautiful touch, comfortable dribber, strong and lively.

Very much looking forward to seeing some sexy link up play between him and Lallana this season.

I think he will be a different level to Lallana. He looks like he knows when to play it and hopefully has a final ball.

I bet he's wondering why the f*ck he came to us.

....apart from the " I want to play in the Prem. bit ". I think we offered him twice what he was getting at Bologna (maybe that has something to do with it ?)

Tottenham....it seems ..were a bit more stingy when they wanted to buy him. I hope he punishes them in the best manner possible when we play them next month.

Were you in the Arsenal end with the sun in your eyes? It was fairly clear to me that he was a cut above the rest of our team even in the 45 minutes he was on the pitch. Oozed class, had a real presence about him, strong, quick, a great touch. Plenty there to get excited about.

Agree with all of that.

I was in the Arsenal end and you could tell straight away he is class and agree he is worth getting excited about. He may have sprayed a few loose balls but ffs he had one days training with us, is not aware of the type of runs or positions his team mates take up and is probably not 100% match fit due to not being played throughout the transfer debacle and was probably still jet lagged and was still our best player in the second half.

I was in the Arsenal end ....
So you did have the sun in your eyes then. Admittedly he looked OK against a team in third gear, but there is a definite danger of seeing what you want to see rather than what you actually see. Souness must have thought that Ali Dia looked good in training :D Seriously though, I hope and expect him to be a class act - but there wasn't much to go on in that 45 minutes of football. If I were seeing him for the first time, and without knowing the history of the transfer, I would be thinking "not too bad - looks like he could be a good player for us" - but certainly not drooling and thinking he "oozed class" just yet. To be honest, I thought Rodriguez showed up the best in the second half. Good movement, good in the air, and held the ball up well.

One thing I did like was when Arsenal broke down the left late on, and crossed towards someone umarked on the far post, Ramirez ran from the half way line, slid in and passed it back to Kelvin to clear. Clyne and Puncheon were caught upfield. I thought it showed a great attitude and a good reaction to a dangerous situation, especially compared to Puncheon, whose reaction to a pass being intercepted was to drop his shoulders and sulk.

He is not going to play right mid. He will play central attacking or left wing. How can we have had a massive thread on him, several videos and people not know where he will play.... hope he doesn't read this forum.

To be fair I think him and Diamanti played in behind their forward at Bologna. So would have thought he can play left, right or centre. Ideally we'll have players who can all interchange so they don't have a set position as such. Also, we already have Adam who his best position is on the left, and Puncheon isn't great, plus we don't play with an attacking CM.

Totally agree with that mate.

4-4-1-1 was how we played second half vs Arsenal. That works well with Ramirez in the 10 position.

Tim Vickery answers a question on Ramirez:

Why did Uruguay's Gaston Ramirez join Southampton? He was linked with everyone big and as a Saints fan I can't really work out how we managed to get him. Will he be a success in the Premier League?

Nico

I suppose it's a tribute to the strength in depth of the Premier League that a much-touted talent is willing to join a newly promoted club - one of the things that makes this such a fascinating move.

A club in Southampton's position have little margin for error with major signings. After paying out big they really need a new acquisition to produce - as soon as possible.

I hope Ramirez will be able to do that, but there is clearly a risk involved. He has a wonderful left foot, but he is not especially quick, and those long legs mean that he lacks speed off the mark. Can he find space to impose himself on frenetic English midfields?

There were some promising signs in the recent World Cup qualifiers. Uruguay did not do well, but in the half hour he played against Colombia and the full 90 against Ecuador Ramirez produced his best international displays in the two years he has been hanging around the squad. There was less of the 'little boy lost' about him. He looked like he felt he belonged.

Against Ecuador, Uruguay ended up dropping him back a few metres in the hope that he could get good service into the box from deep. It was an interesting variation - something that was also tried in the Olympics - but it can leave exposed his lack of defensive aptitude.

bearsy..

here is a brief review of the game..in bullet points for ease.

- Kelvin was horrific...terrible for their free kick and beaten at the near post again

- scored two own goals

- fox was all over the place

- our midfield did the complete opposite of what they did against man u and just marked space and let arsenal do what they like

- Fonte was quite good considering

- yoshida looked miles better than jos

- our defensive unity as a team and defensive tactics were horrific

- lambert had no chance what so ever

- lallana was pretty gash

- we usually get docked away from home in the prem over the years just like this from time to time

- j-rod at last came on up front and the difference in movement and pace compared to lambert was very evident

- Gaston became our best player within 5 mins..looks strong on the ball, was straight away playing the odd pass between their full backs and centre backs.

- a very bad day at the office

I watched this game with my brother on borrowed Arsenal season tickets. I must say that this is perhaps the most concise and accurate review of a game that I've ever seen on this forum. I will read your reviews of matches I haven't attended very carefully in future.

Also see that we're indebted to the mancs for another chant. Only Saints fans could take a song they were taunted with a few weeks ago and make it their own.

"We're Southampton, we do what we want" the week after the FA Cup defeat to Man U not ring any bells then ?

I was quite drunk so thought I may have imagined this bit, cheers for reminding me.

The boy will have to learn quick, don't pass it back to Kelvin under any circumstances, big mistake. Hopefully NA will have coached that dangerous tendency out of him this week.

On Saints Player Puncheon was asked about Ramirez and a massive grin came over his face and he said something like, "Gaston is a player, when he is fully settled in you will see how good he is. In training he never gives the ball away."

You could tell he thought he was class, and from what Adkins has said the rest of the squad do.

Definitely a good sign about his ability, but also as he is liekly to be earning more than the others its obviously not an issue if his abaility stands out to the squad - he will clearly help the other players.

The most impressive thing he did for me was the 20 yard dribble where he held off a persistent Coquelin all the way, amazing strength and balance, kept in control and retained possession throughout. If we can get the right system around him he could be massive for us.

Yeah that was his best moment. He also had a couple of decent shots and I think the key for us is to get him involved near the opposition area as he is the player who has that creative spark to make or take a chance. We have plenty of tidy passers around the mid third of the pitch but he can make a difference for us where it counts.

He also took a couple of lovely corners.

His range of passing towards the end there was something special. No panic in his play at all. Even when being closed down. 12million well spent and trust me if anyone thins about coming n for him it s going to cost a damn lot more than 15m. We will need to say in the division to keep him though.

Strong, composed, beautiful touch and vision... He doesn't give the ball away and works his way out of tricky situations. Couple of absolutely superb through balls and touches.

Looked fantastic today. Think once he settles in a bit more... He's only been here a week or so... He will be an absolute gem.

He's miles better than anything we had before, movement, space, passing, looked every bit worth the money. When he gets familiar with Adam, SRL, Maya and Punch what a player he'll be for us

He learned a lot about them in the first half and put the knowledge into practice in the second half, but I don't think we've seen his full array of talents yet.

When the other get familiar with him and keep making the runs he's capable of feeding, we could really see some goals.

he definitely needs runs and he will find you...the flick for clyne he tried for lambert in the first half, but rickie was just a tad too slow for it...

Yep, that's exactly the point DD. I think Rickie was a little slow because he din't think the pass was "on", which - for 90%+ of players, it wasn't.

I don't think that will be lost on Rickie, and he'll be quicker next time.

Totally agree with all this, the sort of player who's worth the ticket price all on his own. Already looking forward to watching him in action again. Great great signing, and with raise the game (if he hasn't already) of our existing players. Win win

You can tell he is a top, top, top player just by the amount of space he finds - that's not luck, that's a nack. From the highlights I saw before he joined I always felt he had a brain on him, always painting a picture - very much the case. Strong, composed, skilful - our best player by a mile. Let's enjoy him.

Never seen a Saints player so comfortable on the ball. He oozes class

He creates time and space for himself, a class above anyone else we have If I'm honest. Will be a pleasure to watch him this year.

Still confused as to how we actually managed it, as he's quite clearly Liverpool or Spurs class!
