Thedelldays Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 How come he seems to be exempt from any criticism on here...? For goals at arsenal came from the attacking down our right. his slip against rvp let him score (the same happened about 5 Mins after) Scored and OG yesterday Seems to be a bit of a golden boy I'm sure he will improve but he has been just So bad As for the defence as a whole... IMO, it goes alot further to having just better individual players.... The midfield seem to just stand off.. We pressed against man u and it worked a treat. We defend very narrow on both sides We seem to be struggling to string passes together at times... Which will give the ball away Zonal marking.... Why now? Essruu Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 We've been zonal marking for some time. It's not just the first team, but the U21s, U18s and U16s that are all defending this way too.

pingwing Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Simple our system relies completely on who ever is left and right midfield to pick up one of the two runners and track back. Yesterday Puncheon played barry big ****** and decided he would be an inside forward who didn't once need to come back into his own half. That left Clyne with two people on him at all times which was painful to watch, exactly the same thing happened on the other side but with fox playing so far forward and leaving Lallana and Maya to cover. The own goal was either touch it and try and put it out for a corner or leave it to go in and let Kelvin be beaten horribly. Against United he he was pretty good, their 2nd was from a cheap rebound that nobody reacted too and the third was a corner from the right side which no CB picked up RVP. Not sure how Clyne was at fault for those... Our defence needs a slap and bungee cording together so they learn where they should be to play a decent line. MOTD last night showed we were playing 3 at the back for their 3rd with Fox wildly out of position, not because he had a chance at the ball but because he is an idiot. Also could do with a large amount of red bull as no one seems to react to anything once the shot is off, bit like playing fifa shooting and half celebrating for it to hit the bar and someone to score on the break.... The system and ways of playing do work, but only when the team listens, but for the first half yesterday and Wigan we decided that the players know best and most of them completely ignored Adkins on what to do and how to play the game, so we turned up, defended very deep and got punished. shurlock Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 The FBs were on a hiding to nothing - both in the sense that midfield gave them little protection and, by dropping so deep, we allowed their FBs to push on. Gibbs at times was playing as a virtual winger against Clyne. IMO the CBs could have got slightly closer to, and in support of the FBs as Arsenal didn't really play with a centre forward/attack down the middle. pangy Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Punch has left him out to dry on many occasions, yesterday when Gibbs and Gervinho were rampant down the wing Punch should of tracked back and had one of those but instead left it to Clyne. VectisSaint Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 How come he seems to be exempt from any criticism on here...? For goals at arsenal came from the attacking down our right. his slip against rvp let him score (the same happened about 5 Mins after) Scored and OG yesterday He is not exempt from criticism. But he played quite well yesterday, and prevented Arsenal scoring a lot more, their main threat came down their left side and Clyne and Fonte did well against that. True, more goals came from our right, but that's what happens when that is the side where the opposition has the threat. I assume you did not see the Clyne own goal, not a lot he could have done about that. The truth is that Fox is a liability, hopelessly out of position time and time again, making it very difficult for Hooiveld/Yoshida to cover, and they end up being dragged out wide to the left to cover the huge hole that Fox leaves. In the end it comes down to the simple fact, Clyne is raw, young talented full back who clearly has the ability and can improve. Fox is just out of his depth and does not seem to understand the basics of defending, and will be used less and less in set pieces and in attack now that we have other options (Davis and Ramirez for corners). Clearly Adkins knew that Fox was not good enough and tried to do something about it by signing Buttner, but that little **** ****ed us around when Manure came sniffing and left us without other better options apparently (although I think Yoshida would be good at LB if Hooiveld is fit). S-Clarke Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Clyne sums up our team if I'm honest. Full of quality, but occasionally very naive. He'll learn though and he'll prove to be a very good player for us, but he's on a steep learning curve - In many ways it would have helped to have a couple of experienced PL faces alongside him in hindsight. Funny, Lallana has been doing this to Fox for over a year but Fox always gets blamed... weird!

Excellent post. The lack of defensive work from our attacking flank players was what stood out for me yesterday. One reason for Clyne getting a break on here is that he's young and learning with every game. FWIW, I believe he will be a top player in the near future. That does not mean he is perfect now by a long stretch.
