Dalek2003 Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Why worry? Let's face it, two straight promotions hasn't given time for the squad to evolve into a maybe more combative one, but no matter. We are in the PL, ahead of schedule and the manager and players will learn a lot about being there. Wouldn't be suprised if we went down this year, only to come back stronger and more tactically aware, still within this supposed 5 year plan. Enjoy this season, don't get on the players backs, enjoy the away trips and create a fortress at home. Post of the week !
Dalek2003 Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Yep. Yoyo is a sh1t thing that happens, not a strategy. Not fun going down, but great bouncing back. I have a friend who is a 'Baggy' and they loved it !
dvaughanwilliams Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 I would be worried if we lost touch with 17th place. I expected this season to be a battle against relegation and our current position, whilst disappointing, isn't surprising. We've had a couple of poor performances: the Wigan game and the first half against Arsenal, but some decent ones against Man U and City. There are signs of hope there. If we stopped looking like an attacking threat or consistently put in poor performances, that would also be a worry. This club has a long history of last minute escapes from relegation. I fully expect this season to be the same, possibly going down to the last game to decide our fate.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Not worried yet and will not be until after the Villa game if we lose. Even then I will not be too worried as there will still be time, however if by the end of November we still don't have any points then alarms bells will start to sound and I also think that NC will be considering his options carefully. As someone else has said, you don't spend £30m to expect to drop out of this division. The one big issue for me is Adkins, rather than individual players. I am sensing that he's the one that has not adjusted yet and this is typified by (a) the defeat to Wigan at SMS, but mostly (b) yesterdays drubbing which was largely caused in my opinion by our midfield sitting back too much in the 1st half and not taking the game to them. We gave them FAR too much room and time to play the ball. We thought we could mix it with the Arse at their own game (because we beat them on pens in the Leibherr cup!?!?) and we got found out. In short what the hell is the point of a massively expensive mid-forward line of players if you're not going to set-out to be very attack minded but instead play deep? NUTS! Whitey Grandad Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Been worried since the final kick of last season. Exactly. My only crumb of consolation was that our defensive weaknesses might be sorted by a few summer signings. There were obvious problems for the last couple of months of last season. SnailOB Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Bit daft imo Going down will be a disaster ? Really - how so ? Going down would be disappointing. Going down with huge debts, no squad, looking like no future, now that would be a disaster. We've been there and done that bit and hopefully wont go there again. IF we go down it just means losing players, changing squad etc.. but then we had to do that with going up and no-one seems to care too much about the likes of Hammond, Barnard, Harding etc.. moving on. If anything, fans are already crying out for more of our League 1 / Championship squad to go (Davis, Fonte, Guly...) Of course I want to see Saints compete at the highest level against the best teams but if we have to play in the Championship next season i'm sure i'll enjoy it and will not perceive it as a disaster. egreog Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 In some ways the first 4 games have been a wake up call that might bear fruit. With the exception of the Wigan game sandwiched between United and City, nobody would have expected points. In fact losing to Wigan was no surprise as psychologically it probably appeared "winnable" relatively more easily than any of the other and Saints typically slip up. This Villa game is massive now. The fans know it, the players know it, and the management know it. I genuinely feel that a weeks "gelling" time on the training pitch after the recent internationals should bring about a togetherness that is the hallmark of previous Saints campaigns throughout the decades. It should be there to see next week. If it is not evident then I do fear and become extremely worried as to where points will come from.

SaintRichmond Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Ok it's fair to say we were handed a very tough start to our return to the PL. It might have been nice to have got a couple of lesser PL sides first to maybe get a point or two on the board early doors for the players confidence. However not to many of us were expecting much from our first four games and while I'm sure no one is happy to have 0 points after four games with our opening fixture list it is to soon to panic. General consensus on here seems to be our season starts with Villa (no pressure there then:)) My question is. If we continue to fail to pick up results when will you start to become concerned? after Villa, after Everton sometime beyond that....... I think most of us expected us to beat Wigan Man C away... should have lost 6-2 at least if City had taken their chances Man U..... snatched defeat from the jaws of victory due to the Managers crazy subs policy Arsenal .... most worrying of all, because we were never in the game, and they exposed our defence for what is is ... Non Existant Cortese has spent BIG for Saints to be in the Top Ten. I will be amazed if he waits much longer before he appoints someone who is much more tactically aware than Adkins. (Yes I know he got back to back promotions etc etc) But HIS team are bottom of the pile

But the shape of the team and the openness is also a factor I didn't say you wanted him gone, but what is becoming obvious on here is that a handful are itching towards a situation where replacing Adkins soon is a 'valid' discussion. My reference to Fergie, I feel is a valid one because it is perfect example of what an up and coming, obviously bright and energetic manager can do at a club given the time and resources. We have something now that we didn't have before, and that is resources. What we had before, that WE DON'T NEED now, is a conveyor belt of new managers. We all know how that story ends. If Adkins in the new year, has us bottom with daylight irreversibly disappearing, replacing him is a valid discussion. Wade Garrett Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 To be honest I'm worried now: we have zero points (although I accept the fixtures have been tough). Defensively we aren't at the races. We don't seem organised, players continually out of position, and set play defending a disgrace. For this the coaching staff are as culpable as the players. Some of our tactics, team selections and substitutions have been baffling. We seem to fade physically at the end of games. I'm not sure the manager has the full respect of the players (this is pure speculation on my part, just the impression I get). We have a keeper who looks out of his depth, and our only option to replace him is a 22 year old who was at Gillingham last year. I know it's not too late to turn things round, and we really need to show our support. But at the same time, I am worried.

woodsaint Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 Its obvious where we are struggling and thats defensively. But im watching the Reading game and with a back 5 of mccarthy, gunter, pearce, gorkss and harte, i have no doubt that man for man we have better defenders and this is probably the case when compared to another 5/6 prem defences. The problem is that even though we are better man for man we are struggling collectively as a defensive unit but this will improve with time especially since a few of our defenders are new to the team. Give it time and we will be ok especially when were not playing top 4 sides. Combine this with our attacking options which are good enough for top half prem league i come to the conclusion that we will be just fine this season and finish 13th or 14th. Optimism is the way forward. COYR

CeeBee Posted 16 September, 2012 Share Posted 16 September, 2012 I'm worried. I really think that most of our troubles lie with our GK. He doesn't inspire confidence in the defensive players and they in turn are losing control in front of him. Logically bottom spot with less than 10 points by the end of October would be ominous, but look at Wigan last season . They were dead and buried at New Year, but strung together 7 wins in the last 9 games ...and survived. The only worry is that the morale disappears if we are dragged into a dogfight, and the players start to get itchy feet i.e Gaston or Guly become fed up and homesick (a la Delgado, Van Damme, Mikael Nilson) and aren't prepared to fight for the cause. Alain Perrin Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 The first few games of a season are no indication of what will pan out (and on the plus side we've had as tough a start as I can remember). So on that basis having the big 3 in our first few games is a good thing.... Also, I find it ironic that those fans who used to rail against us having 10 managers in 3 weeks (or whatever the statistic was) also have itchy trigger fingers (as they did during the 10, they just conveniently forget about it now). If _we_ get rid of Adkins before 10 games I think we'll a) be a laughing stock and b) not be giving him a fair crack. In fact, we'd have to be cut adrift to consider it, if we're still within +/-3pts of relegation by then I wouldn't support it at all. Savage made a good point on 606 yesterday. If we do go down, NA is probably the best man out there to get us back up again. [That's not saying NA isn't beyond criticism, there are plenty of things to do better, but he is on a learning curve, just like the players.] COYR
edprice1984 Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 I am not worried for two reasons: We have just played the top three from last year, yes the Arsenal game was not great but I did expect that we may struggle there. Our next 5 games are all winnable/we can pick up points Secondly we look like we can score goals, yes our defence is suspect at the moment but we have played 3 of the top 4 attacking teams and Wigan. If we had taken our chances against Wigan we would have won. Plenty of time, very much like the beginning of the -10 points season the first win will be the spur for the rest of the season. I have said it since May, it was obvious in the way we conducted ourselves in the transfer market. We are investing in the long term with good young players and in sustainable way. Enjoy the ride and get behind the team ! Arrggh, I agree with Dalek on something!!!
derry Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 What worries me is the attempt to pick a system and then put players into positions they don't relate to. In my opinion we need to sort out a system that gets the best out of our players. Unsophisticated as it is 4-4-2 wouldn't be any worse than what we have at the moment. We give the ball away too often, don't close down ruthlessly, hunt in packs and give the opposition far too much room to play.
