How long before you become worried?

Ok it's fair to say we were handed a very tough start to our return to the PL. It might have been nice to have got a couple of lesser PL sides first to maybe get a point or two on the board early doors for the players confidence. However not to many of us were expecting much from our first four games and while I'm sure no one is happy to have 0 points after four games with our opening fixture list it is to soon to panic. General consensus on here seems to be our season starts with Villa (no pressure there then:))

My question is. If we continue to fail to pick up results when will you start to become concerned? after Villa, after Everton sometime beyond that.......

We are not in debt.

If we get relegated we will have the money and players to get us straight back up.

We are following the yoyo strategy.

We will give it our best this year, but staying up is a bonus and going down is not a tragedy.

I have said it since May, it was obvious in the way we conducted ourselves in the transfer market.

We are investing in the long term with good young players and in sustainable way.

Enjoy the ride and get behind the team !

Given that I never actually expected us to do very well in this league - I won't become worried. Relegation was never a certainty - but it was and still is a distinct possibility. Our start was never going to be easy, but the problem is how it affects the players confidence - if we get cut adrift early, we could end up doing a Derby. If the players keep belief - we could well survive, who knows.

The upshot is I'm not going to be worried at all this season - we are favourite to be relegated, anything else is a bonus - therefore nothing whatsoever to worry about.

yep last few seasons a lot has been made of giving the team a "winning mentality" I wonder how long that mentality will last. As a team used to a lot of success over the last few seasons this is uncharted territory (have they ever lost 4 in a row since the take over) will be interesting to see how they respond.

Please don't continue with this, it is absolute nonsense and makes you look ridiculous. Saints haven't made a net spend of circa £30m this summer with a strategy of getting relegated to get promoted again in mind.

The money we have spent is an investment fopr the future regarless of what league we are in next year. We are building a team for the future we are not going to be governed by shirt term fixes.

I still think that the 'winning mentality' is very important - obviously though we now need to look objectively at it. Would we realistically expect to win against the sides that we have played - probably not in most cases.

Therefore I don't thinks that the players should lose too much confidence when you consider the Manchester displays and results. However today's result was a bit of a tonking no matter how you dress it up and that obviously will affect confidence.

If the players keep their nerve - we should be ok. If they don't - the championship beckons.

Not worried though as I don't give a toss what league we are in.

This.

We may or may not stay up this season, that's in the laps of the footballing gods, or at the whim of the Fates, or down to Lady Luck, or voodoo - whichever it is I don't care, the world won't come to an end. I support Southampton FC; managers come and go, players are generally mercenary buggers, but I'm no plastic -Red & White is forever.

All these bed wetters !

Think, we lose our premier status.....so what

We are a club with NO debt. We have a talented team of YOUNG Players.

We have a manager who has got us promoted twice and can do it again.

We have a Swiss family who are backing the club all the awy.

We are not them down the road.

Perspective please. Hold your nerve and stop this ridiculous bedwetting !!!!

If we are relegated the team would be ripped apart, the likes of Ramirez etc won't hang around in the Championship. You'd have to build a team again!

Please enlighten me how having a net spend of £30 million this summer (the 4th highest in the Premier League), is preparing for a yo-yo existence? :D

Reasonable question to ask, and I'd be interested to hear people's responses.

For me, I'd give it another five games. The Villa game is huge, but as Nigel rightly points out in his post-match interview, we should not build it up so much that we become edgy and nervous in our play. Similarly, us fans must do our utmost to create a fantastic atmosphere that the players will relish playing in.

I don't think it's unrealistic to say that I'm hoping for six points from our next three games, which should give the players a renewed sense of belief and confidence. However, as us Saints fans should know, it's never that straightforward and I'm sure there will be plenty of twists and turns over the coming weeks!

Keep the faith.

When the fixtures were released, I think it was assumed by most of the footballing world that we'd been given a bloody tough start. That has transpired to be true based on the amount of points we have.

So, we've kind of got through the start, still in touch with everyone. I think that's the least we could have hoped for.

What worries me most now, If I'm honest, is the pressure that will be on the Villa game. When we play with pressure and tension (I.E Wigan) we play like static statues with no zip, or creativity. We have a young team, who have been heavily beaten today.

In many ways, I'd be telling them to forget what's happened before and start the season a fresh. Put all the good work from the Man City and Utd games into it, and we will win. Villa aren't a bad side, they will be a bog-standard mid-table team this year, so it's a game that IMO we should be targeting a win from.

I genuinely don't think we've got a bad team. We're young and naive, but full of quality - much more than teams like Reading for e.g (IMO). It's a big learning curve, and we are playing like a side with no experience at this level. I know there were cries in the close season for PL experience, and in hindsight it may have been a good idea for the defensive areas.

If we lose this, then I will become increasingly concerned. We're getting into embarrassing territory after that stage and a stage where a certain finger will be planted directly on the trigger.

I was worried the day we got Promoted as I had a sneaky feeling that we wouldn't invest in the way that's needed to stay up. I became even more worried when I saw our activity in the transfer market compared to other similarly sized clubs. The highest level of worry was when we lost the Wigan game as that was the one fixture I felt we could possibly pick up points in our first 6 games.

I must admit I'm worried now, and when the effect of alcohol has gone I'll be even more worried.

As previously mentioned on this thread, we will be ****ting it against Villa, probably dominating the game but snatching at chances and generally panicking. We have huge problems at goal keeper and centre back, I'm just hoping that Yoshida is part of the solution.

Just hoping that Ramirez can deliver against Villa, I think he can.

**** it. who cares? we now know that there is life outside the perm. If we go down, so what? We've got a team to lived down there, we'll make a profit on Gaston. BUT... we may just get a run together, start believing, and stay up. If we do, then we'll attract more players and press on.

I was worried when we failed to sign a decent left back and two good centre backs.

I was worried when we lost to Wigan - and in the way we lost. I thought by now we'd have at least 1 point thanks to Wigan.

I was worried when we failed to hold on for a 2-1 victory against United - and even more worried when we couldn't hold out for a draw.

Now I'm terrified having let in 6 goals against an Arsensal side that is far from being a great Arsenal team.

It's not just that we've lost the all of our first four games it's the way in which we've lost them!

I've been worried since the first half against Wigan. I thought that KD and DF looked panic stricken.

So, what are you going to do? You can play Gazza and Shaw but the time to introduce kids is when they can slot into a functioning unit; not when you are shipping goals. Best to hope that our back five can learn to cope quickly surely, (unless some wonderful out of contract player comes from nowhere).

What about changing manager? Well we don't know exactly how culpable NA is do we? Did he have lots of other targets in the summer that we couldn't land? It is interesting that his background is goalie and that is an area where we have been left deficient.

If we change managers now they still can't actually sign anyone until the window. If we are adrift by December any of the realistic names touted on other threads are going to struggle to talk serious experienced talent into joining up.

Thus, the decision on Nigel should be made on how the squad as a whole are reacting to him. If he has their confidence and respect, we should stick with him to the bitter end, even if that means the drop and another crack at it.

What would actually make me worry would be if NC started showing serious signs of going the wrong way. It is a fine line between success and failure and I don't know yet if he is a hard-man genius or a bloke who has got a bit lucky so far and now believes is own hype!

Why worry? Let's face it, two straight promotions hasn't given time for the squad to evolve into a maybe more combative one, but no matter. We are in the PL, ahead of schedule and the manager and players will learn a lot about being there. Wouldn't be suprised if we went down this year, only to come back stronger and more tactically aware, still within this supposed 5 year plan. Enjoy this season, don't get on the players backs, enjoy the away trips and create a fortress at home.

Fair points though I do struggle to enjoy losing to Wigan and being battered by the Arse

Bit daft imo

We were top two all season... So we were ready for promotion

Not as if we snuck into 6th place at the end of the season and won the playoffs

Going down will be a disaster

How do you become more tactically aware by playing in the league we were ready the most consistent in for another year?

Yep. Yoyo is a sh1t thing that happens, not a strategy.

Don't worry, be happy! If we get relegated so what. Gives us a chance to get promoted. Free yoyos handed out at the start of the season.

Exactly. We have invested in young players, who may well stay and if not we will have the money to replace them. We will probably have to sell Ramirez and Lallan but will get our money back, no doubt.

Enjoy the ride...and who knows we may just keep our premier status. If I was NA, I would say 'play without fear' !
