Anyone watch Ramirez last night?

Yes indeed I watched the whole 93 minutes with English commentary, Ramirez was easily the best player on the pitch first half and he just carves himself through the ECU midfield.

It started off at a brutal pace as the tackles on him was pretty hard as they saw he was the danger man, great control of the ball with a eye for a pass too. Had to share the free kicks with Forlan where they had one each, Raminez one hit the wall before he volleyed the rebound wide from 25 yards.

2nd half he was pulled back to protect the shakey centre backs and he was not so involved unless it was a slow attack.

IMHO he won't start on Saturday but I'm pretty sure Adkins will bring him on around the 65th minute mark to replace either Davis or JWP.

I will go as far as saying that Raminez (if he stays injury free) will be a massive player for us and will be the fans favourite without a doubt. My only concerns are will he do a Bologna sulk on us when the big four make us a £25 million offer for his services?

He won't get a chance to sulk if anyone offers us £25 million he'll be out the door before he gets a chance, lets be realistic.

You might be right, but I wouldn't be so sure. If he's doing that well for us, I can see Cortese having the will power to keep him at the club I suspect. Same could apply to all our gifted players. I don't think Cortese will want us to be seen as the whipping boys for the 'big clubs'.

Watched most of it: he is a class act with the ball and always moving to look for opportunities. Sadly, the defensive CMs of Uruguay had zero control on the game so in the first half playing as a "no 10" Ramirez wasn't given the ball in good enough areas.

Second half he moved deeper and started all their attacks, in the way Morgan does for us - shows his versatility.

Every time he got the ball he looked to pass forward, and seemed good with his right foot as well as left. He also looked strong on the ball and capable of taking some rough treatment.

Ecuador were by far the better team I thought.

Nobody keeps players against their will, if we get offered 25 million for any of our players and they want to go they will be quickly shipped out and replaced.

It's much more dificult to get rid of a player the club doesn't want just look at the Forecast, Forte and last season Puncheon situations!

Do you think he'd star in our team, based on what people saw last night?

Yeah - he is a very good player, and with the way we play if Morgan, Cork, Davis, JWP can find him and Lallana in the final third we will be a massive threat.

Last night he looked as influential as Suarez or Cavani. Reminded me a bit of a taller version of someone like Nasri or Ozil although probably not as polished.

He tended to move across the pitch too so was hard to mark - not sure where we would see the best of him - if out wide then in some games he would end up having to track back all the time which isnt his game (think JRod vs City).

IMO he would work best in the centre 3 of a 4-2-3-1. Lallana one side, Puncheon the other. Just need to get him involved as much as possible.

Some stats last night:

Uruguay made 353 passes - Ramirez played the most ( 48 )

Uruguay had 7 shots - Ramirez had the most ( 3 )

Just looked it up 6000 ish miles, 12-14 hours and 4 hour time difference so Jet Lag not so nasty as that our Japanese boys will suffer.

Coming from Japan to England (or travelling west to east in general) is not too bad as you gain hours sleep. Most flights from Japan to the UK leave at about lunch time and arrive early evening/late afternoon which means if you can stay awake until 9pm, you can go to bed and get a full nights sleeps. You might get up a bit early but a 6am start never hurt anyone.

Going the other way is a nightmare as you tend to travel through the night and arrive in Tokyo early am. Unless you can sleep well on the plane, you will suffer.

All in my experience of course. I am sure 1st class is nicer though.

Good review thanks.

I have a suspicion that he has been lined up for the wide right role. Hopefully Puncheons form will have changed this and he will be played in the truer 'number 10' role that I think he is more suited to and we would get the best out of him. Have Morgan and Davis have more emphasis on defensive duties and allow Ramirez some freedom to create.

Thats where he is most suited IMO, and then has freedom to roam a bit. I could imagine in a game where we are under the cosh that he might not track back as well as Lallana and Puncheon do.

The last time I flew from Tokyo to Heathrow the flight left at around 6am Japanese time. I sat in one of the airport smoking rooms reading the live text feed of the Saints v Reading match on my laptop. Just had time to catch their third goal go in before departure which made it an even longer flight than usual

My main worry for him playing in a wide role, not convinced of his work rate from some things I have heard, and we don't need our full backs to be under any more pressure.

Like you said, freedom to roam, freedom to get on the ball and shoot, cross, dribble etc. Essentially build the team around him. Will be exciting to see him in this sort of role and exciting for a club like us to play this way. I hope we embarrass teams like the West Ham to show there is a different way to stay in the premiership.

Bloody hell, 6am. Things may have changed now you can fly from Hanada to the UK as well as Narita.

Back on topic, I think he was bought especially for the number 10 roll. NA has mentioned this roll a few times this season. I think he may swap with AL a bit but be primarily in the centre.

Great, our failure to properly reinforce the CB positions is going to have another consequence - our record signing cant be utilllised properly. :(

I thought he played a more relaxed role was because they knew he was not match fit and wanted to keep him on the pitch for 90 minutes. I honestly believe thats his first 90 minutes this season.

Hope he doesn't get into too much of a pickle.

95 minutes against Team GB, and played in the other 2 group matches as well, so definitely not his first 90 minutes this season

Uruguay are currently fifth in the FIFA world rankings and were second in June. I had no idea they had such a good team

so what you're saying is ......we've bought one of the star players... in the 5th ranked side in the world... for a mere £12 million?..

I can't understand why some people ...who've probably never seen him play ...think he's waste of money - can you ?

I watched it, I tried not to be biased but he was easily the most comfortable player on the pitch when in possession. There was a moment in the first half I think, where he just glided past players. Not with pace, but with elegance.

A very tidy player indeed, who doesn't look like your typical lightweight attacking player either. Puts himself a bit and looks quite strong.

I watched it and would agree with what others have said. Looks very comfortable on the ball. I don't think he will lack commitment either, he was all over the pitch yesterday. Very much looking forward to seeing him play in the red (and white).

Equador surprised me a little. Some really nice attacking football. Was a good game to watch and one which I would never had watched had we signed this geezer.
