JPTCount Posted 10 September, 2012 Share Posted 10 September, 2012 Castrol do an in depth analysis of all the clubs in the top tier of the top 5 European leagues and rank the players over the last years performance using science. The first update of the season came out today, not sure if it's the first 2 games, or just the first, as sharp is the only missing player from the list, but it reveals some interesting things... fox is actually our joint second best defender, and jose is better than jos 434(475)- G. RAMÍREZ - 569 1670(-) -M. SCHNEIDERLIN-55 1678(-)- R. LAMBERT - 54 1695(-) -A. LALLANA - 50 1730(-) -GULY - 42 1737(-) -N. CLYNE - 41 1737(-)- D. FOX - 41 1754(-) -JOSE FONTE - 38 1767(-) -J. HOOIVELD - 37 1861(-) -J. RODRIGUEZ - 24 1870(-) -STEVEN DAVIS - 23 1870(-) -KELVIN DAVIS - 23 1933(-) -J. PUNCHEON - 16 1969(-) -J. WARD-PROWSE- 9 the first number is overall position, the last is current score, and obviously ramirez is our only player who has been on the system for over a year so gets a proper ranking. http://www.castrolfootball.com/rankings/rankings/?position=&nation=&team=771&comp=#label

saint si Posted 10 September, 2012 Share Posted 10 September, 2012 Looks like just the first game if you click on a player (e.g. Morgan) and take a look at the graph
moonraker Posted 10 September, 2012 Share Posted 10 September, 2012 Its the MC and Wigan games, certainly some interesting outcomes, the Guly and Fox knockers wont like it. The video explanation points out that all other rankings are subjective, including the great player debates on here.

VectisSaint Posted 10 September, 2012 Share Posted 10 September, 2012 Just a thought but what the **** do Castrol have to do with football? If they were rating F1 drivers I might be a little more impressed.

laughing now Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 These are based on the OPTA stats. A bit rubbish rightnow because it is only based on two games so far, but worth bookmarking forlater in the season when you need a bit of backup for debates on the forum (assumingof course the facts actually agree with you!). I love it when someone is losing the argument or has run out of logic and just finishes their post with 'Fact.'. As if to say that's the last word, nothing more to say, I'm right. When usually they are wrong. Quite often about Fox's performance. Fact.

JPTCount Posted 11 September, 2012 Author Share Posted 11 September, 2012 amazed at how many ppl have just dismissed this completely, personally i find their project a good outside view of football, and the best use of endless opta stats I've come across. I just wonder if it's because u hate numbers, or u disagree with the standings..? and i don't think castrol have an ulterior motive, or an affinity to a club or player, and it's all done on a level playing surface, so imo the source is less bias than any human could be. if u havn't already watched them, there are some videos breaking down ronaldos athleticism compared to other sports using science , like i said with the rankings, its a real eye opener and nice to see something new rather than the same drivel we get on SS and MOTD every week. http://castroledge.com/football/ronaldo-tested-to-the-limit/
VectisSaint Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 Who has dismissed this? I just questioned why Castrol come out with football stats? If they are based on OPTA then their stats are probably pretty good, and probably exactly the same as any other company who want to jump on the advertising bandwagon that is the PL, but can you tell me why Castrol? The9 Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 (edited) Was written with tongue firmly in cheek! When usually they are wrong. Quite often about Fox's performance. Fact. What this tells me is that Opta overrates "involvement" and doesn't punish key errors enough. I know for a FACT that Fox had more touches of the ball against Man City than everyone else on the Saints team, but he also (as he said on Soccer AM on Saturday) assisted Nasri for City's winner. I wouldn't put a player who'd made such a key error anywhere near the top of the rankings for quite a while, but clearly Opta's weightings indicate otherwise. It is therefore my opinion that they are a load of old gack. Edited 11 September, 2012 by The9
Fan The Flames Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 Who has dismissed this? I just questioned why Castrol come out with football stats? If they are based on OPTA then their stats are probably pretty good, and probably exactly the same as any other company who want to jump on the advertising bandwagon that is the PL, but can you tell me why Castrol? It is the culmination of decades of work by a crack team of marketing experts and number crunching boffins that has concluded that football fans drive cars and that some sort of associated advertising may induce them to buy a particular product. moonraker Posted 11 September, 2012 Share Posted 11 September, 2012 I expect it is part of thier sponsorship strataegy that according to their website started in 2008. "From UEFA EURO 2008™ to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ and beyond… At Castrol we’ve cemented our commitment to football over the years by supporting some of the biggest footballing events on the planet."
