Lallana called up for England.

Great penalty?

There's a reason he's missed loads of pens. He puts loads down the middle. Great penalty takers never do.

Pirlo?

Are you suggesting Pirlo chips all his penalties down the middle?

No, you suggested that great penalty takers are never shoot down the middle. Owned yourself twice there :-) England must have a bad effect on you ;)

Slightly pedantic. The point was Lampard has hit a hell of a lot down the middle, and missed a lot. The only one I recall MLT hitting even slightly central was saved.

Seems odd to be confident in your aim and not go for the sides. Unless of course you're deliberately trying to be cocky and chip it.

Frank Lampard has scored every penalty he has taken for Chelsea that he has hit down the middle.

I'm going back to the Pompey Takeover Saga thread. More accurate, good build up, killer one liners and definitely a winning team. Vastly more entertaining.

Milner wasn't as bad as expected but some of the passing from the back was appallling, the finishing somewhat lacking and the team needed an effective striker and some quick feet in the box. Oh....

"Pedantic" ?? How very dare you! Anyway Lampard's penalty was not straight down the middle. He hit it very slightly to the goalies right. Thank you.

Didn't think much of that. Got to persist with trying to keep possession but just don't have the players to do it throughout the side. Stating the bleeding obvious but what can you say.

We have the players to do it, they just don't seem to want to do it. Our tactics are to pass it around a little in the middle around the halfway line, get it out to the wide man then don't bother to go looking for a return pass, just look to bomb on into the box. Mindless rubbish.

Well that was awful I'm sorry but Adam could have replaced at least one of half a dozen England players and been a better option. Lampard MOM my arse. Cleverly looks like a league one player totally useless. What the hell has happened to Oxo I remember this exciting player who used to scare defenders ****less with skill and pace now he just looks pedestrain.

Still at least watching the England defenders passing it around 15 times between thenselves and then losing it as soon as they cross the halfway line was exciting..........

Lallana was never anywhere near having the minutest chance of ever ever ever getting on the pitch. Surely you didn't expect anything else?

I actually think we did Ok - apart from the awful finishing!

Hate it when people say 'we don't have the players to keep possession'. It would help if they weren't on the bench or out the squad.

Always the hard workers and striker/wingers who aren't that great at either.

Carrick is a good possession player, Lallana is great at it, Wilshere would be if fit and Adam Johnson keeps the ball far more than the usual wingers picked. Bet Lambert would keep it more than Defoe, Carroll or Wellbeck too, he does it for Saints.

All depends how you set up. when we went parker and gerrard is central midfield against italy we were never likely to see the ball were we.

Agree the selection could improve matters and one or two of the better players were obviously missing but we don't have the players throughout the side. Some can do it some can't. Lescott and Jagielka saw a lot of the ball. What do you reckon?

Forget the present dross. We should build for the future. Have Messi impregnate a few dozen fit English lasses, bring over some non-English coaches to help bring up the male offspring, and Bob's your uncle, in 20 years we'll finally have a decent team.

As I and others said many times when AOC was here the player you saw terrifying with pace and claiming he had an amazing football brain was terrifying league one players like the mighty Gary Borrowdale of Oldham, big difference to playing full international players. Many wouldn't have it though, oh no, AOC was amazing,if he was good against Gary Borrowdale he'd be good against premier league players, if you're a good player it doesn't matter who the opponent is, we were told. Therefore I don't understand why AOC isn't tearing teams apart at international level like he did to Wallsall and Dagenham. It's doesnt matter who the opposition is, and in any case, we've been told many times you get more time on the ball the higheR up you go weve been told on here loads of times, so he should be p*ssing it now, surely?

The thing is Oxo didn't even try to run at the opposition tonight, like he did for us, sure the calibre of player he is up against has improved but his whole game seems to have changed it was all pedestrain short passes barely even tried to beat a man all night.

Good post. I liked the fact that we wanted to keep possession but we do need players who can do something with the ball. Glen Johnson was my motm, a right back! And the two centre backs must have loved passing it to each other for 90 mins. Had enough of Lampard and Gerard for that matter. Bring on Lallana. COYR.

Well I did dare to dream that Roy might be the sort of England manager who wasn't afraid to try something different and could look beyond the players club.......

He might surprise some. He wouldn't surprise us.

He'd surprise me. He's great for us but don't see him as good enough for international stage.

Nice call up for him but not convinced he's particularly close to getting a game any time soon. But you never know.

I think you're expecting far too much to suggest that ads could've come on and made a big difference. It's not as if Adam never gives the ball away is it? Plus, this Ukraine side are decent. Finish above them and we'll qualify.

Adam was never gonna get on. He was just called up for the experience. Roy said so himself. Shame really. It would have been nice to get his first call up on merit and be involved rather than because of injury and illness dropouts.

Absolutely pointless call up, took him away from training with Saints for nothing, unsurprising though because Hodgson is an old idiot. Should have given Harry the job.
Don't agree that it was pointless. He said in a interview that it was a good opportunity for new players to come in and get a feel for the setup etc. I doubt Lallana considered it pointless at all.

.in retrospect .......a good game NOT to have taken part in- or more correctly.... a bad game you should be glad to have been on the bench for.

One of the worst England games I've seen in a while..thank goodness Lampard can still score penalties!

I thought Cleverley was very poor in the first half, could easily have had a hat-trick. I was expecting him to be replaced in the second half but Roy (thankfully) wasn't courageous enough to debut Adam.

Could be a blessing in disguise. IF RH has gone as far as to praise Adam and pick him, maybe he'll get a bit of playing time in the coming matches.
