Dr Who? Posted 8 September, 2012 Share Posted 8 September, 2012 Well last season really did takeme by surprise with the game of the season involving my fav team the 49ers. This season I do not see them doing as well as last year, a little bit of unrest over the quarter back position and looking for a new number one over smith, leave me with doubt. I think Green Bay will win it this year now they have sorted out their defence, but I think the Patriots will be there or there abouts. Bring it on!!! lettuce Posted 9 September, 2012 Share Posted 9 September, 2012 Feeling cautiously optimistic that the Seahawks will manage a winning season for the first time in the Pete Carroll era. A top 10 defence/defense and an interesting quarterback competition between rookie Russell Wilson and free-agent acquisition Matt Flynn should help. If Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin can stay healthy then that's the running game sorted. 4-0 record during pre-season is encouraging too. As for the big prize, I see it being a shoot-out between the usual suspects: Packers, Patriots, Giants and Steelers... but I hope for a surprise package to mix things up! Looking forward to it! Rut Posted 10 September, 2012 Share Posted 10 September, 2012 Great start by the Broncos. Manning looked good especially once he'd warmed up. This despite being sat on the sideline for long spells of the game. Damn you Roethlisberger and your long 3 down conversions. Man - some of those were painful at the time. I hate the Steelers but wouldn't write them off based on one loss. They looked good for long spells of the game. Once Mendenhall comes back they could well be in the post season shake-up. Hell - they may even make it back to Mile High for the AFC Champ game. Great to see the Packers lose as well. Steelers & Packers are like the Lpool & Man Utd of American football. Plastic fans everywhere across America who've never been to Green Bay or Pittsburgh in their lives.

shurlock Posted 13 September, 2012 Share Posted 13 September, 2012 DOH! The Ravens looked good (albeit against a mediocre Bengals outfit) and seem to be developing an offence to match their defence. Ravens were very good and the Bengals did make the playoffs last season. But I remember thinking the same thing last season after they destroyed the steelers - next week they lost to a very average titans side. Still think Suggs will be a miss and the defense is starting to show its age. Hard to get one's head around the offense leading the way.

BlakeySFC Posted 21 September, 2012 Share Posted 21 September, 2012 (edited) Not a great start for the Saints 0-2 after 2 very winnable games...next up Kansas City on Sunday (who we should OWN) and away to Green Bay the week after which should be hella tough to say the least! I'm still confident that we'll reach the play-offs but I'm just hoping the team gel before the next tough game against the Packers otherwise I fear we could get well and truly owned at Lambeau Not an avid follower, but likely to looking in on Jacksonville's results this year, seeing as they appear to England's adoptive NFL team for the next few years. Saint 76er Posted 24 September, 2012 Share Posted 24 September, 2012 So then, watching the Iggles is hard work just now but at least it's not boring like watching the Pats. Is it just me or are there far more interceptions all round this season? Watching any of the major league teams in Philly is never boring WC. After two one point wins to open proceedings the Eagles were just diabolical on Sunday. Andy Reid's game management was embarrassing, highlighted by using his last timeout straight after a break and then having to pass on the one yard line as not enough time to run and no TO's left, resulting in another sack on Vick and a 98 yard TD to send the Cards in 24-0 at the half. Reid is pass happy, despite having a short QB who gets sacked a lot and despite having an elite RB in Shady McCoy who is rarely getting to actually, er, run with the ball. In typical Philly fashion the natives are not happy and it never takes much for them to call for Reid's head at the best of times, after all he's been there 14 years and no SB at what should be a powerful club. Still, have to say those Sixers look pretty good for the coming season (Andrew Bynum and all) ...

Nemesis at work then, the usual officials have been giving them every dodgy decision possible for a few seasons now. Guess they know how it feels to have unbiased officials. Remember an NFC championship game against the Iggles a couple of years back, Packers must have got 15/20 iffy decisions in their favour and the Iggles got about 200 yards of penalties. Clay Matthews does it, it's a great play any other linebacker...roughing the passer.

Nemesis at work then, the usual officials have been giving them every dodgy decision possible for a few seasons now. Guess they know how it feels to have unbiased officials. Totally agree. Last night the Packers got a very handy PI call on one of their drives to keep it going. That was every bit a dodgy decision as some of the ones at the end. They ain't moaning about the refs on that one though because that is what they are used to happening. This season is shaping up well. A lot of the so-called contenders haven't started well. Ignoring the hullabaloo at the end of the game last night - what about the 1st half? Seattle were all over Rodgers. It's not so easy to spray the ball around for fun when you are getting clattered and all your receivers are getting covered well. Welcome to the real world. ChicagoSaint Posted 25 September, 2012 Share Posted 25 September, 2012 Always happy to see the Packers lose but the manner in which it happened was appalling. The replacement referees are totally out of their depth in every single game. Did anyone see the play when the line ref threw his hat into the end zone right underneath Kevin Ogletrees feet when he was trying to catch one ? Sacks mean f**k all nowadays, especially with passing averages going up and the increasing ability of QBs to rush. Don't know if elite quarterbacks are not getting it their own way - just think the identities are changing. Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Eli Manning -QBs I would put in the 2nd or 3rd tier- have put up some big numbers this season. I have no team preference still. Guess I'll take in the league again this season and see if anyone jumps out. My son, FWIW, did not chose the Packers. About a year ago (after their superbowl win), he and his classmates were given random teams to write to and see what they got back from the various clubs. He knew sod all about American Footy at the time and didn't support anyone, but quickly got sucked into it and hasn't looked back. He is no glory supporter though, he's told me serveral times that he won't be bothered if they have a bad season and get knocked down a few pegs, this way he can prove to doubters that he's not in it for the glory. Lets B Avenue Posted 26 September, 2012 Share Posted 26 September, 2012 Niners for me. I had an Uncle who went over there to work in the 50s and stayed there. He would come over once a year to see Saints and from the time I was 8 or 9 and the Superbowl had started, he taught me the rules and bought me their merchandise. However, he was a Raiders fan, except when they moved to LA. When C4 started showing NFL in 82, people here were supporting Giants, Redskins and Dolphins and I was accused of being a glory hunter as SF were the reigning champs. I was able to tell them of 15 years of sh it, pre-Montana and Walsh. AFL? Feck em all. Although I did see Buffalo at home to the Pats in 88. Jim Kelly's 1st year as starting QB. Had a soft spot for Minnesota Vikings as they were the first team I saw play (Wembley yonks ago vs St Louis Cardinals) The 49'ers with Joe Montana were the team I'd try and watch on Channel 4 (saw them & Joe v Dolphins & Marino at Wembley - still a moment) Never liked Steelers/Bengals and those running teams from the 80's These days games are all on at daft times of the night so don't watch very much at all & the US highlights shows are just annoying compared to the old C4 stuff Edited 27 September, 2012 by dubai_phil
shurlock Posted 27 September, 2012 Share Posted 27 September, 2012 (edited) Ravens -old man has lived in Baltimore for over a decade when the franchise really came into its own (ironically he grew up in Columbus, Ohio in the 1960s with Jim Brown's Browns). Spent enough time in Baltimore to enjoy the atmosphere of game day and its a proper sporting city. Will be going to the Ravens-Cowboys game during the international break. Like the identity of the team and the emphasis on defence -constantly overlooked but one of the most uncompromising and hardworking teams around, though perhaps they've mellowed a tad. They also play in the AFC North and the Steelers-Ravens rivalry is the best rivalry in the sport. Edited 27 September, 2012 by shurlock
lettuce Posted 27 September, 2012 Share Posted 27 September, 2012 Seahawks for me. Started following the NFL in '86 (when the Bears were reigning SB champs) I was about 9 years old then. My parents randomly bought me a Seahawks replica jersey - the classic 80's blue "uniform" with the Seahawks logo in the sleeves... #28 Curt Warner (THE Curt Warner, not the "pretend" Kurt Warner who QB'd the Cardinals to Superbowl victory years later!) That forged my bond with the Seahawks, during the Dave Kreig, Steve Largent era and I've stuck with them ever since... they're the kind of organisation I like - middle-of-the-road underdogs that (very) occasionally flirt with the big time, occasionally plummet to the lower reaches (most of the 90's!) Stayed up to watch the Seahawks-Packers game on Monday night and still trying to get my head around that game!?

dinger Posted 24 October, 2012 Share Posted 24 October, 2012 Ah, didn't know we had one of these threads... I'm a Dolphins fan, ever since watching Marino when I was a kid. They've started alright this year; the new QB Tannehill looked a little shaky in the first couple of games but now he's settled down he seems to have all the hallmarks of quality. Strong on defence, building momentum and a couple of tight OT losses from a much better record. They'll not conquer the world but I think they'll end up clinching a close AFC East. It's not just Vick it's the useless O line and the awful defence. Vick got severely knocked about last season because of that OLine, think he missed about 3 games and was sore from the first few minutes onwards. He's obviously playing scared and his receivers aren't all that great. The best thing that could happen to the Eagles is Reid getting sacked because he's totally lost it these last 2 years. Takes a decent O Coord and puts him on D and then when it doesn't work out sacks the bloke. He needs to sack himself. Agree Vick has got zero protection, though he has some decent weapons -Maclin, Jackson, Slim Shady. Saying that the O-line is pretty banged up, patched together with a motley crew of back-up guards and tackles - if the Saints can pass rush/blitz, you know something's desparately wrong.
