shurlock Posted 8 September, 2012 Share Posted 8 September, 2012 A game we lost because we couldn't put the ball into the net when we had chances, you pay cash for that in the PL. This is why players like Vn Persie cost 25 million and get 200K a week, they rarely miss chances. Against Wigan, it was more the case of not creating chances than not putting them away. IMO we've been pretty clinical this season and taken whatever chances we've had - City being a good example.
Saint86 Posted 9 September, 2012 Share Posted 9 September, 2012 Aussies are full of how straight talking they are etc. etc. It's a load of crap. And it's weight, not wait. Bit of straight talking for you, listen more in your English lessons. However, I do think that Yoshida should replace Jose, even if its just to take the poor lad out of the firing line. He looked shot against Man Utd. Yoshida's pace should help Jos as well. Why buy him if he's not better than what we've already got? Come on dude, seriously. Just stamp prat on your forehead. You offered nothing to the conversation, spouted nothing but mildly racial discrimination and gave bugger all debate. Attacking spelling on this forum. I'm actually embarrassed that you're English right now.

Not wishing to gainsay you but when the opposition's keeper gets MOTM and a 9/10 rating then you'd kinda suspect he had a few saves to make. Also did NA not say himself that we failed to convert our chances ? Edited 9 September, 2012 by Window Cleaner

He made one excellent save and a few routine saves, one of which he nearly spilt into the goal. The poster was correct, it was creativity we lacked, not finishing. VectisSaint Posted 9 September, 2012 Share Posted 9 September, 2012 Against Wigan, it was more the case of not creating chances than not putting them away. IMO we've been pretty clinical this season and taken whatever chances we've had - City being a good example. We made several chances, hit the bar twice, Wigan keeper made plenty of saves. We really should have buried them, they were woeful, but they had 2 clearcut chances and scored both (although the second one was really inconsequential as we were going to lose anyway). Our problem against Wigan was our finishing, we could have played all night and we still would not have scored. It is really the main difference between Championship and PL, the clinical finishing, and we are just not clinical. We should have scored many more against United, we certainly weren't denied by their defence too often which was **** poor for the most part, though they did prevent Prowse from scoring. SW11_Saint Posted 9 September, 2012 Share Posted 9 September, 2012 Time for change I suspect, and since we didn't buy the centre back with Prem experience that we needed Yoshida is the obvious choice. Fonte had a slightly better game against United but is, as suspected, generally struggling at this level. At fault for Van Persie's winner. Great servant for the club, and deserves his place in the squad as cover, but no more. That said, have no idea what Yoshida is like!

alpine_saint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 I am wondering if part of Fonte's sh*teness this season is lack of understanding/nervousness with Fox and Hooiveld. Will be interesting to see in the next game if he strikes up a good partnership with Yoshida. Here's hoping... Looks like we are stuck with Fox, sadly. Depsite how popular Hooliveld is with the fans Fonte hasn't been the same player since he joined. For whatever reason they dont look comfortable together. I said many time last season we were flat track bullies, most of our clean sheets came when we had a lot of the ball and were dominating teams. We didn't get many points from tremendous defensives displays and being solid when under pressure. More often than not we'd conside a sloppy goal due to an individual error. The writing was on the wall sadly as this season we will see far less of the ball and have to be solid if we want to survive.

Turkish Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 Leeds away was probably the best back to the walls defensive display of the season. It wasn't though was it. It was a tremendous goalkeeping display and some poor finishing, to say we defended brilliant isn't how the game panned out. They had 22 shots at goal FFS!! How many misses were there when the player really should have scored? How many great saves did Davis make?

Turkish Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 And it all frequently broke down at crunch time last season. I agree with you on this Alps. Middlesborough, Blackpool, Reading, pompey, all games of the top of my head in our run in where we conceded sloppy goals due to poor defending. You could list similar examples for just about everyone bar Reading though? And their sloppiness happened at the start of the season as opposed to the end. We're never going to be 100% at any level but as a team, we need to find a better shape and be more agressive and alert when we don't have the ball. Reading were solid when they needed to be, im sure they rode their luck at times as well but the fact of the matter is we gave away a lot of goals last season due to individual errors and switching off. We were great at defending when we had lots of the ball and were dominating teams, not so good when we had less than 50% posession and had to dig in. The warning signs were there to see im afraid. The Kraken Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 And it all frequently broke down at crunch time last season. Oh I'm not denying that; but I don't think that it's a lack of understanding of playing with each other. Just that Fonte, Hooiveld and Fox are all far too prone to making significant individual errors. I think they could play as a defensive unit together for another 5 years and still be succeptible to the same type of errors we're seeing now. Tokyo-Saint Posted 17 September, 2012 Share Posted 17 September, 2012 I would say the midfield for that game was terrible but the last gasp defending was good.

Yes, they could all have concentration issues, but I think its more like a Niemi at Krap Nottarf type situation; they dont all trust each other completely so havent always fully got their eye on what they are doing. Fonte is the one with a pedigree of sorts, so I consider that he is the most likely to sort his sh*t out with someone reliable alongside him. It DOES make a difference - look at Klaus before Killer was injured and Klaus after - still same player..

I've alluded on another thread that I don't think the defence have too much confidence in Kelvin behind them; his constant shouts of "away" when he could much more often come and punch clear (or God forbid actually catch the bloody thing) don't do too much to engender confidence from backtracking defenders when a ball is flighted into the box. Maybe you're right and its the same with the three amigos playing alongside each other, the left hand rarely knows what the right is doing. Gervinho's first goal on Saturday was certainly an absolute calamity in all aspects of defending, it was farcical.
