What do we think of the new kit now?

Actually, I have a question about the printing service. A relative dashed down SMS when it came out and got my kids inital and surname printed with their choice of number on the shirts. But the shop didnt bother with "." between the initial and surname. Is that normal or has my relative been ripped off ? I reckon it looks a little odd without it.

Has it created an unfortunate but amusing result? Say your surname is Watt, first name Tim, or something similar?

Peter Enis, etc...

I don't understand those who say they like it because it is different! In what way is it different to the other million and one teams that play in red? Whatever way you look at it, it is a 1980's Nottingham Forest or Liverpool kit!

If you want different, take a look at the 1980s Keegan era red and white fat stripes - that was different - and yet still a proper Saints kit. Or how about the 1970's Saints shirt with the thinner red stripes either side of each red stripe? Or the Draper shirt that some hate with the V at the top?

Personally, I thought last season's kit was hard to beat - it was simple red and white stripes and yet looked somehow more stylish than other red and white striped kits. Despite its simplicity it was incredibly distinct from Exeter, Brentford, Stoke and Sunderland kits. It's a shame we couldn't have just stuck with that one.

Still, there are some benefits - they sold off the old kits while I was visiting Southampton back in the spring so I got hold of a copy of last season's kit at half the usual price and so that will serve me for a few years now until they bring out another must-buy kit. The more rubbish kits they bring out, the less costly it is for me! :)

I want to buy one home/away to play football in but I wonder what the material is like. Are they designed to actually play in or just for strolling around town in? The only time I ever had one it was a nightmare, it was like wearing a plastic bag. Is it a climalite or similar? I play footy in +30c and 90% humidity so it really needs to be 'performance' wear.

I liked it from the off, still do, bought it, like how it looks on me and I enjoy wearing it at the gym. A change in look one in a while is a good thing. However after watching Saints in action I have to admit I'm beginning to miss the stripes and it isn't really Southampton. A few times I have seen highlights of our matches and for a split second thinking it was Liverpool before realising it's us. I think it's more to do with the red shorts, perhaps if it the shorts were black or white it would be easier on the eye but all red doesn't really look right on the pitch.

It's far from being our worst home kit though. Some of our own brand FL era shirts were ghastly, mainly the ones with the crappy white boxes to accommodate the sponsors. And the kit we wore during our final season at the Dell, that was far worse.

And we haven't even worn the white kit yet! We won't next week either as it will be Yellows again.

Unless we are allowed to wear all white at Everton or Villa who both have white shorts, or change to the red shorts at Everton, we probably won't wear the all white until Liverpool - and I struggle to think of another team we'll be able to wear it against without either changing kit needlessly from red or clashing with part of the home team's kit. Arsenal will be yellow/blue/blue, there's too much white in their home kit.

Having seen West Brom in navy/white shirts, white shorts and white socks against Everton in all blue the other day I wouldn't be surprised if we wore white/red/white at Everton, though we don't like to mix kits if we can help it - we only used a mix of home and away kit in two away matches last season, at Fratton and Watford.

I like it, but probably going to buy the away one as I like that even more!

People are obviously very fussy it seems, it's also still red and white striped.

It's no more red and white striped than red and grey striped. And it clearly isn't red and grey striped, is it ? Or for the alternative angle, ask Liverpool fans about their red and white striped kits of the 1980s and see if they think you're insane.

Why on earth would we need to change kit at Everton ? We are currently playing in all red, Liverpool seem to manage to wear that at Goodison, season after season.

We should know that as BBC & ITV continue to show that fixture thinking the rest of the nation might in some way be in interested.

I was hoping we'd break out the Colombia colours with the red home socks with the yellow away shirt and blue shorts, but we brought out alternate blue socks instead. The home socks even had yellow Umbro logos on and would have matched just fine.

The white socks looked fine with the home kit too (though it was a bit too much white, the red were better). I won't get started that we began the season in white socks with blue logos and finished the season with white socks with black logos...

it is a brilliant kit where we dont get confused with Sunderland, Stoke, Exeter and many foreign teams. New club new identity

So you travel about with people coming up to you in a state of confusion regarding this?

I have NEVER experienced this, heard of anyone experiencing it or any other such nonsense.

Awful home kit. Looks like a Saints training top.

I can't understand the "at least we don't look like Stoke & Sunderland" comments; we just look like L/pool, Forest or a poor attempt by Crewe,Swindon or Bristol City to like L/pool instead.

Bring back the stripes, or the Keegan era strip at home.

(and preferably amber and black away.)

i dont wear them as I think it looks sad middle aged blokes in these kits. When I was younger i might well have but in those days it was not clever wearing your kit to the away games as you were a target.

Well thats your opinion, when Im driving about I see a striped shirt and think it a saints fan only when getting close it is Sunderland Stoke etc. As we have been out of the PL so long the younger fans from around the country would not recognise us as Saints fans but Stoke or Sunderland as we have not been on the radar. The club will look at the best commercial way forward and if they indeed do want to progress in the East etc (not Norfolfk) they would like to get an identity. All in my humble opinion of course.

The kit is smart and you dont look like a deck chair when walking around West Quay etc

Initially thought it was bland, unimaginative and without any connection to our history/tradition.

Now... I still think all of those things, plus have realised how awful it looks in 'real life'. Cheap and horrible looking. Just sh*t basically, no other way of saying it.

Oh yeah, it's clearly a jinx too.

Hate it

Was talking to the chap in the saints shop when buying another shirt and he said we are in the last year of our contract with umbro and they will not be renewing. Nike brought the umbro rights a year or so ago but continued with them. Umbro are now making Nike a loss and rumour is Mike Ashley (Sports Direct) will buy it and continue to sell the umbro and donnay brands.

Makes sense really as England will finish with Umbro soon and switch to Nike,

Personally, i fancy a bit of Adidas. But there you go...

At least the Umbro designs we've had were relatively unique to us as a club. Adidas are terrible for just churning out tweeked patterns, so are Nike.

Having said that, Kappa would be a bad choice too, haha.

Hate the shirt.

For me it was summed up by Mike Ingham on 5 Live at the Man City game who commented "Southampton are in red today instead of their usual red and white stripes."

For Chrits sake we will have to put up with this kit for a whole season. With a bit of liuck the sales will have been so poor that lessons will have been learnt.
