What do we think of the new kit now?

Really like the kit. Just not 'Southampton'....so pretty much exactly the same as what I thought when we brought it out. However I can put up with it for one season, it's not that bad.

Yeah exactly this

I actually like the kit, think its definately one of our better looking ones, its just not 'southampton' and Im happy to sit with that so long as its only a short term thing

Umbro are currently owned by Nike (as of about 18 months ago), and Nike have sold the high profile Umbro contracts to themselves. Having done this they are now selling off the shell of Umbro without any kit deals - Mike Ashley is rumoured to be interested and Umbro are expected to rebrand as "Lonsdale" type training and leisurewear producers only, probably with Sportsdirect.com distribution.

None of the other Umbro teams are getting renewed Umbro deals, and Sunderland and West Brom (amongst others) have already jumped to adidas because Umbro weren't around to negotiate with.

It's irrelevant to us though, our Umbro kit deal runs out at the end of this season so we're free to negotiate with anyone. The Man City Umbro deal was for TEN YEARS and was only signed 2 years ago, but due to the takeover of Umbro they're wearing Nike from next season.

Potentially we may go with Nike then, or adidas like some others have switched. Either would be ok except they are mostly template kits where the only difference is sponsor and team crest. Personally I do like the unique Umbro retro styles so it's a shame there's no renewel. Perhaps Cortese has an Italian supplier waiting in the wings....................please NO to Kappa! (Think it's italian)

OMG, bring back umbro rather than that chav combat gear. Are we big enough for Nike or Addidas ? How about Puma ?

Here's a thought, do Patrick still do kits ?

EDIT : Indeed they do !! This would be a good starting point for a design :

Unbelievably we have nearly 100% agreement on something on here, but I did notice several regular posters haven't put their 'six eggs in' yet !!

I find myself agreeing with so many posts here, I also hate the Liverpool kit and like/have the White away.

This reminds me of the situation we had back in the 80's when we adopted the Danish pyjama kit as it was know. Pretty much everyone wanted us in our stripes and I remember the front cover of the Ugly Inside (it's in the loft) with a picture of Franny and the caption 'Back to stripes, back to reality' which was a play on Soul2soul's hit 'Back to life' when we eventually changed it.

This I suspect is all about marketing. The club knew that due to the forthcoming premiership campaign shirt sale would dramatically increase whatever the design, so why not give us something we don't really want but will get bought anyway then next season when the euphoria of being in the Prem has died off and shirt sales would probably not match those of this season, go back to what the fans want, stripes, and thus increase the sales again. Just a thought.

I must admit that the red & white stripes were looking a bit tired and needed a complete revamp as we have done in the past, but to go to a kit that has none apart from barely visible white pinstripes seems a major c*ck up.

I would like to know what their plans are for the future as I am confused as to why they would change the kit entirely for one season only and then to revert to the stripes again.

I liked it at first and I still like it.

worn it down the pub for both televised games, in London, and the only comment I've got is 'i didn't realise saints play in red..."

but I dont remember the 80s and I hang around with ppl who don't remember the 80s either, so maybe we just dont understand the problem...

loving the interweb hate for a piece of clothing tho, some of these comments have made me lol hard.

Potentially we may go with anyone, we don't have any commitment to any of them at the moment.

As for Kappa, they are worlds ahead of Diadora, Lotto and Legea's cheapo-looking cack - faffed about with stripes guaranteed with any of them (assuming the return of stripes, of course). Bit too Portsmouth-linked for my liking now though.

To be honest as Umbro are my favourite kit manufacturer, it's going to be downhill from here. Adidas just shove out the same 2 or 3 main templates to everyone with little variety and Stoke and Sunderland's shirts are basically interchangeable as well as the exact same pattern as West Brom's, Nike make horrible plasticky shirts which hold sweat and saturate the shirt, and make both plain shirts ruined by pointless stupid design features (big sleeve turnover contrast colour, gingham, purple hoops) AND ugly gradated and patterned shirts (Barcelona's home and away, Werder Bremen, the zig-zag stripe motif)- although there's a chance they might produce something classic like the current French shirts. Macron are Kappa-esque with their insistence on massive logos, but have at least produced some decent shirts for Leeds, West Ham and Villa recently - they and Nike are probably my preference at the moment. Then there are Under Armour and Warrior, both trying to expand their market share after annexing a couple of big names - and both responsible for some horrible away kits (as well as a nice Liverpool home from Warrior).

Baffled by the use of the word 'cheap'. Whether it's to individual tastes or not the quality is pretty top notch.

My opinion's not changed - last season's kit was a 9/10, the new one's a 7/10.

I think it looks cheap because it's printed colour on white material and the red on the body of the shirt doesn't match the material or colour of the sleeves or down the side of the shirt, which also doesn't match the red on the shorts. The white is much nicer as it's actually white, with only the pinstripes printed on. The contrast collar looks nicer as well.

Anyone noticed Lallana has taken to ripping his v-neck open ? He obviously doesn't like the collar much.

I wonder how it is selling compared to previous styles?

Those figures should tell us how popular it is overall..

Its always gonna sell better than the one a few years back simply because we are a Premier League team now and that generates more interest (and sales) worldwide. The Japanese people wandering around St Marys in their new shirts being a case in point. Gates have gone up in 3 years, shirt sales will too. If its got the club badge on it people will buy it, and I believe thats whats happened this season. Doesnt make the kit popular though.

I'd expect it may have sold more than the Umbro/Flybe kit worn in Championship relegation and first League One season, but obviously not as many as the sash or we'd have heard how it was the best selling Saints shirt of all time, etc.

Whether it sells more than last season's shirt, not sure. I'm guessing the larger crowds and generally raised level of interest will help make up for any "style boycott", and we'll probably shift a lot more overseas than at any point in the last 7 seasons.

Hated it when it came out but no issues with it on the pitch, a kit's a kit, more interested in what the players are doing than what they're wearing.

After two games I'm not even noticing it's not stripes, I quite like it in a one-off sash sort of way.

Does look tacky up close though, although I have to say I've seen several female types who wear it very well!

The new kit is just so anonymous, it could be anyone in the red or the white kit. Still, at least the club haven't done a Cardiff City on us - can you imagine playing in blue and white?

"Doing a Cardiff City" would see us playing in white shirts - a neutral colour between us and our rivals (like red is neutral between Swansea and Cardiff - in fact Swansea's away kit is red this season) but coincidentally related to national identity. If Cardiff were to play in all white for a home kit there would probably be uproar - though they've played in white away shirts, just like we've had blue ones.

There has been uproar amongst Bluebirds fans, their new home kit is red!

Er, yes, I know. But there would be a bigger stink if they'd tried to make it Swansea colours, just like we'd kick up about changing to all green, but we'd kick up about wearing blue shirts, white shorts and red socks a lot more. Well, maybe not the white shorts and red socks so much... :o

Guest flickjax
that is not us, it does not feel like us, it has very little to do with SFC..other than seeing the odd black and white picture

Much better than looking like Liverpool or Forest
