Relegation

Unthinkable. However, if the worst happens, will it be catastrophic for Saints? We were so close to folding in 2009 and the turnaround has been miraculous. Yet, with the cash we've spent in this transfer window and the investment into the training ground/academy, what would happen if we dropped a division? Would the Liebherr family be satisfied with this? I just can't see the club being self-sufficient and I fear it could be a major hammer-blow to our aspirations.

I must admit, relegation no longer fills me with the dread it did back in 2005. I really enjoyed our little stint in the lower leagues and have a lot of respect for fans who continue to watch their teams there. At the end of the day, I don't really care which league we're in, so long as we're playing good football and winning a few games...

We are relegation favourites and have been since before the season began. No matter what I'm just going to enjoy the rude

Saints were 2nd or 3rd favs before but since the window close, they have gone to the bottom being odds on with some bookies.

I think its been planned for with the signings (Ramirez aside) so it wont be a killer should it happen. However that gap between the PL and NPC will grow massively after this season so it will be very difficult for any promoted side to stay up after next year.

It fills me with dread having spent £30m on players plus god knows how much in wages plus missing out on the huge revenue increases next season. To be honest, it only became "fun" after we were acquired by a billionaire and we knew that a steady rise back up the leagues was almost inevitable. Before that, it was not fun at all.

I think you should have written a plan should it happen as i am pretty sure SFC are not planning on being relegated

And your lot then?

With all your signings what it the plan at loftus road?

How many was it in the end:?

It's only football really, it was fun for me going to lots of smaller grounds and just rocking up to away games on a Tuesday night and being able to pay a small fee on the gate. Each to their own I suppose.

Who here genuinely thought we would have anymore than 3 points after 4 games? Following the Arsenal game we have 3 months and 12 games until we play a top 4 side (Chelsea). It will be our performance against the other 15 teams that will determine our future this year.

Reasons to be cheerful? Absolutely:

  • We have goals in us
  • We have played well
  • We have players to come in
  • We are showing naiviety, this will improve
  • Clyne, Davis and Davis have come in and done well.

If the deficiencies at LB, CB and possibly GK persist then we can address in January.

It is not going to be the season that many on here or expected, but we have a good team, a good squad, a manager who learns fast, a Chairman prepared to spend - so don't start dusting off the Championship guidebook just yet.

We have more points than we did three games in to our first season in Lg1...I think people thought we would get relegated from Lg1 back then too!! It is possible to have a crap start and avoid relegation.. If we have 0 points by Christmas I will worry....and even then I am not fussed about becoming a yo yo club anymore..It's funny, with the 27 years in the top flight i was scared we would implode and never come back - we have shown you can sink a long way, enjoy a rollercoaster ride of emotion and come back stronger and more unified - so what of we go down? We fight to come back up...even if we are sold off or all teh players leave, we are in a position to carry on and survive...nothing can be worse than -10 in lg1 !!!! on wards and upwards!!

3 games doth not maketh a season. Bottom by Chrimbo then that's another story.

As it is I'm just enjoying the ride and will worry about relegation if and when it does happen.

Remember we started league one on -10.. We still have more points this season than we did back then!

I fully expect this season to be good too.. Good things come to those who wait.

...and rock bottom of the table with no points. Everyone's saying 'it's ok, we'll be fine if we carry on playing the way we are', but football doesn't work like that.

You're so right....us QPR and Liverpool should not bother for the rest of the season as it's clear those at the bottom now are going down.

We'll be fine. We have the toughest start to the PL campaign of any team. The league table is no indication of our final position come May, in fact with the tough schedule we have had it's a false table. We have 2 new players to come into the first team and if we can pass and create the chances we showed against City and Utd we'll be mid table by xmas. Heck we are only 9 points out of first place and 7 out of second place.

Quite right. Premiership is great but I can live without the media hype and tosser premiership fans

I am sure that a number of scenarios have been contemplated and planned for.

Obviously the desire is to stay in the Premiership but the management must know that the chances are we could get relegated.

We have spent money, but we have not thrown it around, in fact I think we have been quite prudent.

I am sure that one of our sttrategies is to consider the 'yoyo' strategy and keep key players in the knowledege that we copuld bounce back straight after relegation.

This could go on for a fair few seasons until we reach a point of stability.

Not worried at all as Saints would be in same situation as West Ham were in that we would have a very good chance to get promoted back to Prem at first try. If not 2nd season as will get £50m odd for going down, I dont think all our players would leave and have enough youth/others to get 11 then buy a few more to make squad 20. Apart from skates who spent £60m in a Russian casino and lost sensible clubs will be in good shape financially and to compete. Enjoy the Prem and dont worry about the results otherwise no point in getting promoted.

Because of the astronomic increase in EPL revenue next season perhaps?

He probably does mean that and it's a fair point as far as going down at the end of this season is concerned because after this season relegated club will be in a stronger position vis a vis other Championship clubs due to enhanced parachute payments from 2013/14. If we are to go down it should be from 2013/14 onwards as we'd have a much better chance of bouncing straight back.

Although we are only 3 games in there is no need to panic however what I will say is.........

It has crossed my mind that maybe the policy of buying young is also if we do have a nightmare season and get relegated the players will have resale values, if we'd bought in all 30+ year olds it would have been harder to shift these payers (if needed)

The hope would be that some of these players would stay andhelp get us back but we all know players of Ramirez quality aren't goin to play in the championship.

Fits in with my thoughts completely. of course we will give it a go. But, we won't risk the club financially and very wisely we have a very good plan B should we get relegated.

No, we should enjoy this season whatever the outcome because we have it covered !

I'm confident of staying up.

If the worst did happen though, our team is full of young assets that we could sell or mould into our next team. We wouldn't be lumbered with a host of aging journeymen on silly wages. That was where Pompey's parachute payments went, We'd be in a position to invest the money back into the team to mount another challenge. Hopefully it doesn't come to that as nothing comes easily in the Championship, but we've been smart in making sure we'll be in a good place whatever the ouitcome.

If we go down we can completely **** the champ next year.

Then again we have more than enough in the squad not to get relegated provided we don't let our heads drop with the results so far. Adkins has one massive thing in his favour and that is a blind positivity that clearly rubs off on the players. If we are rock bottom and miles off in january, thats when wetting the bed can commence, not till then! (and really covers post transfer window results too)

Plan A is to stay up.

Plan B if we get relegated is obviously to sell Gastom Ramirez for £30 million - recouping all the money we spent in the transfers window this summer.

Maybe sell a few others like Tandanari, Yoshida, Manyuka and Clyne as well to lower the wage bill and generate some cash flow - as I expect they will go fr more than we brought them in for!

Bring bsck Aaron Martin, Lee Barnard, Billy Sharp and Dean Hammond from their loans.

Bring through players like Calum Chambers, Ward-Prowse, Reeves, Isgrove, Shaw and Corby Moore.

And possibly bring in a few championship players and get promoted again.

Hmmmm, almost favour plan B over Plan A ! Can't we just get on with getting relegated LOL !

We have achieved premiership status ahead of plan and were we to be relegated (which isn't so bad imo) we would be in a strong position to bounce straight back, with the parachute payments, youth players and recalling those on loan. Wouldn't mind being a yoyo club until we were settled.
