Why on earth did we loan out Barnard?

Does not look slow.

Cannot believe how much of a slow tempo that game was played at.

Isn't it nice when you look at matches and see that though ? I remember when we had Stephen O'Halloran in on loan and he played for Ireland U-21s against England U-21s at St Mary's, and even then, only a couple of seasons removed from the Prem, I thought the England U-21s tempo was astonishingly quick compared to the Championship, and as the U21s had a lot of Prem players it worried me at the time. Turns out we were nowhere near needing to worry about it though !

Anyone notice that Tommy "Threepast" played for the Gills tonight, and Jonno Quick failed to score against him (Crawley won 3-2)

Increased his total number of top level professional appearances by 25%

Puts into perspective how poor a signing Forte was?? I thought common consensus was the kids who did the half time lap against United could have smashed a hattrick each past Forecast....

Was also watching the game tonight and I thought that he did alright tonight bar the misses and the pen!!!

Would have been Sweet had he scored against Pompey Again to send them out But that's Football for you!!!

I will still wish him Good Luck and All The Best for the Future and I hope he scores in the game at Bournemouth

v Pompey again as well!!!

I also can't see why Brian Howard left Saints as well as I thought he looked like he was doing alright for Pompey

but that IMHO!!!

Because he wasn't good enough for us, still isn't, has hardly ever been bar a couple of seasons.

Bit unfair on Barney plenty of good players miss penos. The two misses where bad but at least he was getting himself in the right postions we all know Barney isn't PL maybe we should have loaned Bournemouth Sharp as well. Still can't work out how pompey can afford players like Howard and Mcleod....

All agents who have signed short term contracts I think. Pretty sure Pompey only got permission to give one month deals pending the never ending saga of who is going to rescue them

Well judging by his JPT performance tonight it was the right decision!

...unlike the decision to loan out Sharp, who was our most prolific goalscorer in the last few weeks of last season (thereby crucially assuring our promotion) and Sharp was also our most prolific goal scorer pre-season. I strongly believe that had he been on the bench to replace Lambert against Manure he would have caused enough problems to have prevented their onslaught in our penalty area and we would not have lost.

Barny however would not have that ability and I am pleased that he has been loaned out. We might still need him (and Sharp again) if we go down

I couldnt disagree more..... About Sharp that is

He is on a large salary, doesnt possess the required ability to cut it in the prem and whose only game is as a poacher.

How he could have prevented the onslaught I just dont know, what exactly was he going to do ? I could see Mayukas input as his pace could have gave him some joy, but what we needed was the ball to stick upfront, Sharp wouldnt have provided that

Injured in training on Friday.

Groves was on Radio Solent last night and said something like ...he was injured against the Cheats on Tuesday and was back at Southampton to be assessed by their medical people. He had gone for a scan which had just shown a strain to a knee ligament and would be out for 2 weeks.

although I don't disagree with the main point you 've made....it has to be said that without his " poaching " at the tail end of last season..we might not have been promoted.

tally in last 8 games 2011-2012

Billy Sharp..... 8 goals... in 8 games.

Rickie Lambert ...3 goals

Jos Hooiveld.......2 goals

Adam Lallana......1 goal

Jose Fonte ...... ..1 goal

I think those stats. speak for themselves. Without his efforts.... we'd still be in the Championship.

It may well be that if Billy clocks up 20+ goals for Forest that he may return and become past of next seasons squad, or more likely stay ...if Forest can pay the required fee.

Not had the best of luck with injuries really has he.

How many games did he actually play for Saints?[/QUOTE]

from the time he signed until injury in April 2011...he scored 23 goals in 62 matches (a strike rate of around 0.3 per game)..barely average, but his goals came in short bursts so he looked good - short term.

After a 6 months lay off, he made 7 (brief ) appearances from the subs. bench...without scoring. Also at 28, he isn't going to cut it against the new strike force.

A good L1 player ...who should do well for B'mouth, although I doubt if the rest of their squad is good enough to see then promoted.

* His record at Southend was 37 goals from 75 games ( 0.5 goals per game is a VG standard).but then again... it was at a lower level.

  • 3 months later...

His loan runs til Jan, so they wouldn't be cancelling as such, just not renewing it.

They have brought a lot of strikers in on perm deals so it does make sense for those to get priority, especially as Im sure Barnard is quite expensive in wages (probably highest of their squad).

When you look at it, LB has always scored goals in L1, but that is probably his level. He is 26/7 and has no Championship record. At Saints he was surrounded by some exceptional L1 players (poss amongst the best to have played at that level in the likes of Lambert, Lallana, Chamberlain, Schneiderlin) so it was no suprise he got goals for us, and as a 250k signing it was a bargain.

Hopefully someone like Sheff Utd might go for him, but wouldn't suprise me to see us struggle to get rid of him, especially on a permanent deal due to his wages.

Anyone know when his contract is up?

* he was actually 28...in July. Once it was apparant we were going to loan out Billy Sharp ...keeping him wasn't even on the cards.

** this was the main problem. If he had half the flair that was apparant in his L1 days, he'd have scored a few on his sub. apps last season, because he never got a full game as such.

*** I see your point, but can't think a London lad (ex Spurs-Southend ) ..would be happy to move up North....

He'll either be happy to sit out his contract, or take a drop in salary and get some regular games somewhere else ...depends how much he loves playing football - doesn't it ?

Well, as he's not even made the bench the last couple of games he'll obviously be back and looking at the teams he might be interested in e.g. Swindon, Brentford, Stevenage he's going to have to take a massive drop in wages I would think. So he'll join Dickson and claim his wages until he's 30 then (if you're being cynical). When he was off for so long with the hand injury/court case etc does anyone know how he reacted? He didn't make the squad much, from memory, so I think it's been odds-on since Sharp was signed that his future was likely to be elsewhere.
