every day while I'm at work some 0845 number rings up and leaves messages on my answerphone bout reclaiming payment protection on loans i never had.

Someone told me if you dial a number just after they've called it blocks them forever, but I dunno the details.

Register with the Telephone Preference Service and then log the numbers with them. If they continue to call you then you can get them banned.

Was thinking about you today, Jamie :)

not me...sadly..

I remember it took me over 4 years to get paid correctly around 2002-2006(ish)...was pretty dire then at getting basic pay right..let alone bonuses etc

so many people have their pay screwed up..which is pretty mental as it is all (now) computerised and you can see yourself what rate you are going to get (online) and it still pays you wrong..

I remember when my mate never got paid at all randomly 1 month....he mortgage came out on the 3rd (as well as most of his bills early in the month)....the pay office offered him £500 cash and then the rest on the 15th of the month....massive LOL

There seems to be a new type of service that when you answer your ringing phone - It starts the ring tone at your end until they answer!!

After letting them have my opinion on that, they assured me I wasn't being charged - It was just how they set up their phone system.

Spent quite a bit of time working from home and surprised how many calls come in during the day.

Works very well with UK-based sources in my experience, but international callers ignore, as the law is unenforceable outside of the UK.

This.

If your caller display shows "international" or "unavailable", be prepared to swiftly tell'em to do one.

Feign interest in whatever they are trying to sell you for a few seconds, and then say 'that sounds really good, I'm just going to go get my credit card, can you hang on a second?'. Press mute on your phone and go off and do something else.

I heard it usually happens when you enter your number as part of registering for Hindi Adult entertainment websites?

Try and beat my record of keeping them on the line for as long as possible. I managed to get one call to last over 30 minutes once.

It's fun carrying on with stuff & then after a few minutes hearing them ask if anyone is still there! See if you can guess (a) how long the call carries on after you put yourself on mute (b) how long they stay on the call from the point they first speak after them waiting for you to 'come back' :)

I once had a woman from MBNA who i had a credit card with trying to get me to transfer money from different cards if I had any. When I said I had a couple of others with money on them but that they were already at 0% she continued to try & pursuade me to take advantage of her 5% rate offer!!!

They get round TPS by saying its a marketing call, not a sales call. I'm registered with TPS and still get calls, basically you can't answer the home phone during daylight hours. ****ers.

That does not exempt them from TPS rules. If a Uk-based company, report them. I've done this before now. It does have an effect. The only excuse Uk companies can use is if you are already a customer with them, and they are supposedly talking to you about your contract or similar.

It's the ones from abroad that you can't control, since they are outside the TPS's area.

Thats correct, but if you have a caller-display phone (which most of them are nowadays,) at least you can be prepared to tell them what for. The only flaw in this is that a lot of people phone via skype, which can be routed through foreign networks depending on where the broadband costs are lowest at the moment they call you, so it could still be a customer calling you showing up as international.

The other thing is to check your website. If a phone number is displayed you will get spam calls all the time, and I dont think there's any way round that. I stemmed the flood of automated emails by taking the email address off the site and replacing it with a drop-down form, but the phone calls still come at a rate of knots. Just had one in fact, some bird with an indian accent who was "from microsoft. There is a problem with your computer. Can you switch it on and tell me the passwords, please?" ffs. I get these calls at least a dozen times a day.
