Aussie press reporting that he is set to be announced for Sydney FC tomorrow morning at 11am press conference in Turin, after agreeing terms. Looks like a done deal now.

Lets just wait and see they said before he signed with Sydney and he didnt

So has he still got (some of) it ala Giggs and Scholes or another Michael Owen?

Yes he has got it in him. He needs a hardworking set of teammates around him- exactly like Saints team- but he is glorious in possession, simply an exquisite player.

We need defenders NOW more than we need ADP though. But NA and NC know that.

Having said that IF we got the defenders AND ADP.....well.....who is not going to get a Del Piero Saints Shirt? Im not sure that our Saints fan base or even the english EPL fanbase in general quite gets who Del Piero is and what he represents. He would be THE star of the EPL and we would sell out everywhere because people would want to see the legend. 28 appearances last year, 5 goals for the champions unbeaten all season, mainly from the bench though. With him in the squad we have instant international appeal. He is akin to David Beckham in Italy but with an even squeakier clean image. In footballing terms i think he's still worth it, but in marketing and image terms he is priceless for Saints, we will be taking the fast track to big boys if he comes on board. The world will seriously look up and take notice. And he is already wealthy beyond his needs. He does not need the money. He would only come for the challenge. Which is a mighty good thing to know.

You don't forego the opportunity to sign ADP because you've not been able to land the defenders you were after.

some people it seems will never get this. When he signs for Sydney officially, there will be a chorus of "good, we need defenders more than attackers" or "at least we can focus on strengthening the defence now" .............

Is Sky's news old?

Former Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero is getting ready to make a decision on his future, and reports in Italy claims it is a choice between Sydney FC and Southampton. Gazzetta dello Sport says Southampton have offered Del Piero a two-year contract, while Sydney want the 37-year-old to be a football ambassador in addition to fulfilling a player role.

so Olympiakos and Sion are out of the running ?

If we lost out to Sydney I'd be gutted. What sort of heritage do they have compared to us, and what sort of gravitas does their league have compared to the EPL.

If he goes there, we know he doesnt give a sh*t about the football anymore, just like Beckham when he went to LA Galaxy. In which case they can have 'im.

@NabilHassan79: For all those #saintsfc fans getting excited by the prospect of Del Piero signing for them. The Australian is reporting he's joined Sydney.

Been reports in Aus all week that it's a done deal but It hasn't happened yet so he must be seriously considering other options.

Depends if he wants to participate in genuine competition anymore. He's nothing to prove to anyone, after all.

Oh, I agree, most definitely. Unlike Beckham, who didnt win that much.

But if he is not 100% into the football anymore, and is going to be a bit of a passenger, thant Sydney are welcome to him.

I am just wondering what NCs motivation is on this one : the glamour or the football ?

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri

Seeing these Italian Journo names pop up again is making me break into a cold sweat....is it two weeks ago again?!

I just talked to a couple of Italian colleagues in my office. This is being followed surprisingly closely by Italian neutrals. I asked one question and the answer lasted 10mins.

Apparently ADP is still very much into his football and not having played in the PL is viewed by him as a hole in his achievements. Also, with the pressure off last season many observers felt his game improved, he scored some great goals and still put in a full season.

The Italians in my office reckon the reason the Syndney deal isnt closed is because he will come to us.

Only telling you what I've been told.......

Or ADP's agent is trying to flush out further interest from other EPL clubs. We shall see.

As you say, as a media and marketing event, this would be massive. Likewise, I agree that this would be on a par with us signing Beckham, not maybe on the national stage, but certainly on the international stage. There is only a handful of players whose names are known almost universally and he is right up there.

I wasn't going to buy one of the new Liverpool strip shirts, but I'd buy one with his name on it. There is potential that in a fantasy world scenario, he comes to us and scores many glorious goals, raises our profile massively and that this inspirational signing goes into the annals of Saints folklore. Equally, he might get crocked after a few matches, ending his career.

Is it worth the gamble? You bet it is!

Guardian reporting that he has not decided yet - not clear whether this is based on any new info though or just rehashing what's already been discussed:

I am somewhat surprised that there is anything left to consider after reading that. It seems to me that, although they may well still get their man, there is a serious level of hype and propaganda going on from the Australian side.

I agree with your point earlier that it sounds like it's going to come down to desire. Big pay packet for a cushy number in Oz, or less cash but a final real challenge over here. From everything I've ever heard about the guy, he seems like someone who truly loves the game, and if he put in the best part of a full season last year for Juve it would suggest he's still got the fire in his belly.

Time will tell I guess but I'm actually now starting to think we might get him, simply because he'll want to play football at the top level for as long as possible. Which would be remarkable, really.
