Del Piero Offered Contract

Well Strachan would never have been without Paul Telfer, who, love him or hate him, was a exemplary professional who gave every bit of himself for the squad. If I'm not wrong, Telf's still fit and playing football. Age doesn't matter if a player is fit, keen and has a keen eye for the game.

We went down with Redknapp in the team but I can remember him controlling the home game vs Liverpool and running the show that day.

Ssshh - you are undermining his argument with a contructive defence with use of a very good example. He denies he is a troll, but everything he says is for pure effect to get a reaction.

I'm not saying we need him but every position needs a backup and some positions need a backup and another, alternative option.

For instance, your team there would have backups like this:

Gazza

Richardson - Fonte - Seabourne/Stephens - Shaw

Cork/Chambers - Chaplow/Davis

Guly/Lee/De Ridder - ADP/Lallana - Lee/Mayuka

Jrod/Lee/Mayuka

So, lots of options, although fewer in defence.

But who would start in ADP's position? Not sure he'd come here to play second fiddle would he?

He's a player/coach at Sutton now. Didn't feature in the U21 game there pre season though.

So who would be dropped if in the unlikely arrival here of del Piero?

Schneiderlin, Lallana and Ramirez are auto picks whilst Steven Davis is looking more likely for an auto spot as well.

Maybe he could play CM as a stop-gap? You tell me, otherwise it ain't logical to hype up such a move for the guy to park his Rrse on the bench every week just in case Morgan gets crippled or red carded.

Punch is clearly going to miss out anyway so one more ahead of him will probably see him away on loan in January which would be a pity on yesterday's showing.

Guly also looks to be all washed up at this club, his misdemeanors no doubt being seen as bringing the club into disrepute and thereby infuriating a chairman who expects exemplary standards of everyone.

if you doubt this, do we not already have the classiest match-day programme in the PL?

I can't believe people are suggesting that they wouldn't want ADP to sign.

The man was, and still is, a top quality international player who won the Italian league last time out.

He would be an ideal addition to the squad, and bring much needed experience to a young up and coming group.

£15k per week is a snip for this level of experience. You just cant buy that.

Class player. If we do snap him up, we will worry about the luxury of trying to fit him into the team!

If we could wind the clock back 5 years perhaps we could get Paolo Maldini into the side?

We are lacking experience, but really lacking premier league experience, and at the back, it really does show!

Well that's the end of that then.

Can we focus on getting a bloody world class centre back instead?

Why?

Spurs, Liverpool, Man City, Juve, etc were after Ramirez.

I'm sure, if we want him, we could compete with Olympiakos.

We're Saints, we'll sign who we want

If we really after these relics from past glory in building our team to compete for Europe, exactly what message would the club be sending out about our intentions? :(

Del Piero played regularly in the team that won Serie A and went unbeaten *last year*.

People are talking about him as if he's fifty.

He is probably closest in terms of age and ability and achievement to Paul Scholes. Although arguably he's better and has achieved more than Scholes.

Is there seriously anyone on here that would say no to Paul Scholes coming to Southampton? Seriously?

He obviously wouldn't play every game. In fact he'd probably be on the bench for most of them. But imagine the impact he could have in that time. He would be exactly what we seem to desperately need - someone with ability, experience and a cool head who could control the game, keep possession and dictate the tempo of the match.

It's hardly a stretch to say that if Del Piero had come on instead of Rodriguez or Guly, we probably would have 3 points right now.

So other users should not bother coming on here then just so you can continue to pollute the forum with opinions which you've already laboured to death?

My forum user experience is much better now I have three regulars on ignore.....

But back on topic, Del Piero would be awesome, and his attitude and example would be great for the youngsters coming through

I know he's old (though not "past it" as some have suggested) and I know we are already overrun with attackers but the very idea of Del Piero, who I have loved watching as I've grown up, playing in a Saints shirt simply sends shivers down my spine. I doubt it will happen, but I'd personally love it. He'd really be someone for the youngsters to look up to.

The more I think about it, the most it sounds like it would be a stroke of genius.

Schneiderlin/Davis/Cork/Ward-prowse rotating in the deeper midfield roles to do all the running work, with Del Piero playing almost a trequartista role and playing the passes for the wingers and centre forward.

Also, the more I think about it the more it sounds like a crazy dream that I'll wake up from and feel gutted that it wasn't reality.

FFS if you don't like Alpine's comments, block him and if you do feel the need to respond to him don't do it by quoting him so the rest of us have to see bOth his and your postings again. I honestly feel all his detractors are just as intent on building their rep as Alpine bashers as he is at building his of being the forum's biggest wind merchant or whatever it is he's up to.

PM him, block him or just start your post with ALPINE: .... So the rest of us can flick past and not eat into our day rereading the same carp.

Marvelous post.

Couldn't agree more.

I'm pretty sure it's the kids or upto 25's or even 30's on here that always seem to bang on about club policy and this and that player being over the hill come 28. For the rest of us it would only signal a return to the finest days of our existence. Just has to be quality and not some journeyman lookin for a final paypacket. They are out there I am sure and in ADP you can be assured of his quality.

and we would get beat.......if we move on from that 3 in midfield that we had sunday then we are asking for trouble.

why change that, we caused enough trouble against man u and was solid in the middle

leaving 2 CM and an attacker (who drops back...yeah) we will literally give up the middle of the park against most teams in this "average" premier league and will get beat most of the time

look what happened against wigan when we had 2 CM in the middle...yep

No agenda, you obviously think that Rodriguez should be played in a wide position, and Adkins can do no wrong.

thats your opinion,we disagree, but I respect you view without having a personal dig.unless you do agree that Rodriguez is playing out of position and this is a managerial mistake therefore we do agree....which is it?

Del Piero would be,as it stands at the moment,a fine acquisition.

although our focus should be elsewhere in the strengthening of the squad.

You post your views and within them you attempt to veil your digs at NA but it is there for all to see,

You have an agenda against him without doubt and it clouds your mind and judgement.

I'm not saying go 4-4-2 again. I'm saying the other 2 CM would sit a lot deeper and not go forward as often.

These type of signings though are less about day to day play and more about what else these guys bring as standard - the experience they can share with younger players , the profile they bring and the impact they have on interest in the club and its profile, and the commercial benefits, be it from sponsors, corporate etc.

What is the point???

He's totally lost it!,the only reason we would sign him would be because Cortese wants him

plus he'll play NEVER and be on BIG wages!

You obviously Don't remember us signing "over the hill" Alan Ball from Arsenal. What a difference he made!

Two roads, a crossroads. For Alessandro Del Piero, the future narrows to two options. The first is related to Sydney, steps forward after yesterday's meeting. Remains on track Southampton, temptation Premier League. With the closing of the lists Champions, are no longer viable tracks Olympiacos and Braga, discarded yesterday. Since both had been offered a contract, but Alex decides hours. Between Sydney and Southampton ...

Another 100 pages on Italian translations on their way ? lol

If you had the choice as a top player to play in the Australian League on big money or in the PL on less money but still a good wedge pitting your wits against the very best in the world I know which one I'd choose. For someone who has stayed loyal to his club even when they were demoted he doesn't come across as someone who considers money of primary importance therefore I'm hopeful he will make a decision based on football and come to Saints. He would be a Keeganesque signing even at 37, he would offer so much on and off the field financially and helping the young talent we already have plus it could have a very positive effect for Ramirez too.

Obviously we need defenders more but I don't see this as an unnecessary signing.
