Thedelldays Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 Played there several times for Burnley..........hth be interesting to know how he got on....just because he played several times there for burnley in the NPC has not really done him any good for us... and what a completely odd signing to play wide left forward
ART Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 Well Strachan would never have been without Paul Telfer, who, love him or hate him, was a exemplary professional who gave every bit of himself for the squad. If I'm not wrong, Telf's still fit and playing football. Age doesn't matter if a player is fit, keen and has a keen eye for the game.
thefuriousb Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 We went down with Redknapp in the team but I can remember him controlling the home game vs Liverpool and running the show that day. Ssshh - you are undermining his argument with a contructive defence with use of a very good example. He denies he is a troll, but everything he says is for pure effect to get a reaction. mulletsaint Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 I'm not saying we need him but every position needs a backup and some positions need a backup and another, alternative option. For instance, your team there would have backups like this: Gazza Richardson - Fonte - Seabourne/Stephens - Shaw Cork/Chambers - Chaplow/Davis Guly/Lee/De Ridder - ADP/Lallana - Lee/Mayuka Jrod/Lee/Mayuka So, lots of options, although fewer in defence. But who would start in ADP's position? Not sure he'd come here to play second fiddle would he?

Charlie Wayman Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 So who would be dropped if in the unlikely arrival here of del Piero? Schneiderlin, Lallana and Ramirez are auto picks whilst Steven Davis is looking more likely for an auto spot as well. Maybe he could play CM as a stop-gap? You tell me, otherwise it ain't logical to hype up such a move for the guy to park his Rrse on the bench every week just in case Morgan gets crippled or red carded. Punch is clearly going to miss out anyway so one more ahead of him will probably see him away on loan in January which would be a pity on yesterday's showing. Guly also looks to be all washed up at this club, his misdemeanors no doubt being seen as bringing the club into disrepute and thereby infuriating a chairman who expects exemplary standards of everyone. if you doubt this, do we not already have the classiest match-day programme in the PL? SO16_Saint Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 I can't believe people are suggesting that they wouldn't want ADP to sign. The man was, and still is, a top quality international player who won the Italian league last time out. He would be an ideal addition to the squad, and bring much needed experience to a young up and coming group. £15k per week is a snip for this level of experience. You just cant buy that. mulletsaint Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 He's not gonna play 30 x 90mins I understand that but if he's a starter one of our other better players will then be playing second fiddle. I'd rather keep the dressing room happy and stick with those who've shown they can play at this level and hopefully will only get better.

Wildgoose Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 I can see him being brought in for his experience and perhaps to specifically mentor Ramirez and help him develop. Dr Who? Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 Class player. If we do snap him up, we will worry about the luxury of trying to fit him into the team! If we could wind the clock back 5 years perhaps we could get Paolo Maldini into the side? We are lacking experience, but really lacking premier league experience, and at the back, it really does show!

stu0x Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 If we really after these relics from past glory in building our team to compete for Europe, exactly what message would the club be sending out about our intentions? Del Piero played regularly in the team that won Serie A and went unbeaten *last year*. People are talking about him as if he's fifty. He is probably closest in terms of age and ability and achievement to Paul Scholes. Although arguably he's better and has achieved more than Scholes. Is there seriously anyone on here that would say no to Paul Scholes coming to Southampton? Seriously? He obviously wouldn't play every game. In fact he'd probably be on the bench for most of them. But imagine the impact he could have in that time. He would be exactly what we seem to desperately need - someone with ability, experience and a cool head who could control the game, keep possession and dictate the tempo of the match. It's hardly a stretch to say that if Del Piero had come on instead of Rodriguez or Guly, we probably would have 3 points right now.

green_gibbon Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 I know he's old (though not "past it" as some have suggested) and I know we are already overrun with attackers but the very idea of Del Piero, who I have loved watching as I've grown up, playing in a Saints shirt simply sends shivers down my spine. I doubt it will happen, but I'd personally love it. He'd really be someone for the youngsters to look up to.
Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 The more I think about it, the most it sounds like it would be a stroke of genius. Schneiderlin/Davis/Cork/Ward-prowse rotating in the deeper midfield roles to do all the running work, with Del Piero playing almost a trequartista role and playing the passes for the wingers and centre forward. Also, the more I think about it the more it sounds like a crazy dream that I'll wake up from and feel gutted that it wasn't reality.

ALWAYS_SFC Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 (edited) No agenda, you obviously think that Rodriguez should be played in a wide position, and Adkins can do no wrong. thats your opinion,we disagree, but I respect you view without having a personal dig.unless you do agree that Rodriguez is playing out of position and this is a managerial mistake therefore we do agree....which is it? Del Piero would be,as it stands at the moment,a fine acquisition. although our focus should be elsewhere in the strengthening of the squad. You post your views and within them you attempt to veil your digs at NA but it is there for all to see, You have an agenda against him without doubt and it clouds your mind and judgement. These type of signings though are less about day to day play and more about what else these guys bring as standard - the experience they can share with younger players , the profile they bring and the impact they have on interest in the club and its profile, and the commercial benefits, be it from sponsors, corporate etc.

Hoppysaint Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 If you had the choice as a top player to play in the Australian League on big money or in the PL on less money but still a good wedge pitting your wits against the very best in the world I know which one I'd choose. For someone who has stayed loyal to his club even when they were demoted he doesn't come across as someone who considers money of primary importance therefore I'm hopeful he will make a decision based on football and come to Saints. He would be a Keeganesque signing even at 37, he would offer so much on and off the field financially and helping the young talent we already have plus it could have a very positive effect for Ramirez too. Obviously we need defenders more but I don't see this as an unnecessary signing.
