Will Maya start against Arsenal?

I cannot remember if Jos went straight into the team after he initially arrived on loan but with Maya apparently having a decent grasp of english do you think he will get chucked in against the Arse- or will NA let Fonte and Jos have another go, this time against Podolski and co?

I think they would normally get him to play a under 21 fixture first so his performance in that will be interesting and a marker for his ability to move into the currently settled - but porous - back four.

And if he does start who would he replace?

Jos has conceded two penalties but otherwise ok imo - Jose has looked panic stricken at times and slightly out of his depth ( but against man city and man utd forwards who would'nt).

Much as I love his attitude my gut feeling is that Jos will make way for Maya. One penalty too many in three games. Thoughts?

But its true.

Yoshida represents our single attempt to strenghten our central defence in this window.

You say that without seeing him play, nor knowing what bids for centre backs went in during the window. For all you know Hooiveld and Yoshida might work very well together, lets not right them off before we've seen a new partnership in action over a few games.

Um, did I not say we should go forward with Jos and Maya ?

You tripping over yourself to correct people now ?

Given you normally play 2 central defenders (OK I know some formations play three) one signing represents a 50% increase in capacity not bad really is it!

We must also remember our central defenders have already played two of the best forward lines in the league and whilst found a little wanting I bet 80% of the other central defensive combinations in this league will hardly be that much better against the 2 Manchesters.

Seeing as the window is now closed and we stand little chance of finding a free agent, we are going to have to hope you are right.

Been on the official website for the first time to read a bit called 'Chung got me to Southampton...'

Clicked it everywhere 15 times and I still can't read the article, what a crap website.

i've stoped even trying to read the official web site. I suspect others look at it far less often too.

I find it hard to blame Jos for the Man U penalty. That was all Davies' fault. His distribution was terrifyingly bad.

He should start. Hoiveldt came straight in. We have problems at the back, playing Fonte won't solve them.

I hope that he starts too. Buying an international centreback to sit on the bench when we have conceded 8 goals in three games might seem negligently criminal if Arsenal help themselves to another three in the next match - and Yoshida is not going to learn much playing against the kids and/or waiting to see how he fares against Antonio and Madine in the Carling Cup.

But replacing Fonte? Tough one. I think on overall performances thats the right call. But on obvious mistakes (that have led to two penalties) and a potential weakness that other teams might now look to expose it would be Jos though. If i was a EPL manager Im already telling my most talented ball players to get close to Hooiveld in the area as hes likely to give you a penalty....can see Podolski doing exactly that...but Fonte overall has lacked the step-up composure and his distribution underr pressure has sucked...hmm toughie.......

RB central defence

Point taken - must learn to properly read the post. Apologies.

Still......we will never know (probably) who we targeted officially in that position. After all didn't NA categorically state to to Simon Peach that we were NOT in for Yoshida?

I get the feelng that we put a lot of feelers and offers out but didnt get the response we were looking for and/or talks broke down.

I think we should adopt the philosophy of "get the ****ing ball away from our ****ing goal,as ****ing far as ****ing possible.

I didn't think Fonte had that bad a game, but his reputation proceeds him now on here of course.

I have to agree as i thought the same tbh.

On here though once a player has his critics, those critics are seeming unable to see past their original

view and actually base their opinion on the events seen, i wonder why this is

Perhaps the over riding feeling that they cannot be wrong...i don`t know

Think I must be in the minority in thinking Fonte has been harshly judged here. Definitely made some costly mistakes already, but he's played against 2 of the best strike forces he will face this season - and Wigan. Although arguably got fouled for their second goal (not in my opinion - but could easily have been given the free kick). Davis doesn't help when he plays these suicide balls across the back, it's all well and good playing from the back, but every now and then you just need to f*ck it off into row Z.

I think Maya will most probably start, although I think Podolski is nowhere near the player RVP or Tevez are, so should it be Fonte he will fare a lot better.

Completely agree with this. Whatever happens now after 3 games, the verdicts are in.

Nonsense. He was our player of the season in League 1. Most Saints fans are very loyal to him and it pains them to see him struggling at this level.

But we also cherish having our top-spot back. And in the same way so many of you endorse the decision to show no sentimentality and send Billy Sharp on his way (after 1 sub appearance, not 3 full games, FFS...), some action needs to taken about Fonte's struggle.

And we have another International CB ready to add competition but apparently he's a huge gamble and risk according to some before they have even seen him kick a ball for us.

Fonte isn't as bad a player as people have been making out, there are worst defenders in this league. Needs to focus more and gain a bit of confidence back but his overall game along with Jos hasn't been too bad and teams haven't been steamrollering us at all. They just need a little time to adjust to the pace of the prem and if they do, they are still good defenders even at this level.

Our main defensive weakness is Fox at LB, most their chances came from down that side and it doesnt help CB's when they are constantly being put under pressure but our full backs inability to cut out crosses means that they are often put under a lot of unnecessary pressure.

I must have missed the column of the PL table which shows "attempted transfers" alongside "goal difference"...........
Completely irrelevant comment. You implied that Yoshida was our only attempt at a central defensive signing. I merely pointed out that we probably attempted several, but only succeeded in one. Please try to stick to the subject.
