J rod diamond in the waiting or the new Steve de ridder?

He is a centre forward. he has not played as a centre forward yet so it is impossible to judge.

Thing is with Lambert proving already he will score goals in this league Jay Rod looks an expensive sub to me.

I think if he continues to be plonked out on the left it will destroy his confidence cos he just isnt very good in that position.

NA has had two chances to play him in his favoured position, against Man City from the start then again today as a straight swap for Rickie.

He has not taken either.

So if J-rod is Lambert's successor why is he being played out wide rather than a straight swap for Lambert when Lambert is knackered?

I thought he should've played through the middle when Rickie came off today, but you could see that Kelvin's distribution switched very much to that left wing with Jay Rod where he was winning those headers against Rafael and starting play from there.

I think this is what happened to Kevin Davies when sold him to Blackburn, funnily enough for a similar sum.

Couldn't dislodge the incumbent centre forward and marooned off to the wing. Doesn't score, what a waste of money, good riddance.

Lets hope manager and player find a way, although now we have 57 forwards to choose from I am not sure this will end well for our Jay.

Who remembers being excited when we signed him?

Even when he's got the ball, his touch has been poor.

And this idea that he's being used as a winger is b@ll@ck$ - he's used as a target man/outball, exploiting the mismatch between him and the fullback. Its not as if this is new. While Rickie has played down the middle, he's been happy to roam/drift to the sides for the same reason. With Jrod the role is more fixed and ideally he would be played down the middle but the position still plays to a number of his strengths.

Thats to say, I dont buy the argument that his performances are wholly down to where he's being played.

While Rickie has played predominantly down the middle, he's been happy to roam/drift to the sides for the same reason. Saw him play against us last year, in pre season a bit and then for the games so far this term and I still don't really get it. Odd signing.

As others have said, I was underwhelmed by his signing and particularly for the money we paid. He really needs to be Rickie's back-up now we've got so many alternatives. Today at 2-1 up, I would rather have seen Chaplow come on than see JayRod look lost out on the wing - it just ain't working and we'll get punished time and time again if it's not sorted out soon. And if NA doesn't sort it out then I will start to think NA has not got full charge of his team - woe betide NC if it's proven that NA is being tampered with.

I'm not Chaplow's biggest fan by a long way, but I strangely felt he'd have done a top job as a sub for the last 10mins today.

I'd actually have JRod up top and Lambert wide. OK, Lambert is an excellent target man, but he also has the footballing brain to create attacking moves, and his cross for Morgan was exquisite. That said, with Mayuka and Ramirez on board, and Puncheon seamingly in good form, it's touch to choose the front three.

I'm finding it hard not to say that we don't need him. The performances by Lallana, Puncheon and Lambert today, along with Gaston and Mayuka coming in too, will resign him to the bench I think, unless we have a spout of injuries/suspensions. Oh to have had £7million to spend on a LB/CB.

I do feel sorry for him though.

Yep, pretty sure that if we had a midfielder on the bench, they would have been preferred to a striker. The addition of the Guly/Jrod made sense as both were fresh and are willing workers. We lost it, not because they came on but because the midfield ran out steam and we couldn't make like for like replacements. Chaplow, even Hammond would have offered something not to mention Cork.

I know it's early days but he really does remind me of de ridder from what I've seen so far lots of aimless running with the ball in circles only to immediately lose possession. Opinions?

Its too early to say. I would argue he needs to be given time. Its not fair on the lad, espeically if he is being used in a strange manner.

I do however question the priority in time and funds his transfer was given over addressing the defnesive issues. And I have already made my feelings known about the favouring of him over Billy Sharp (to much derision..)

Quite. I worry that we have signed a promising young centre forward, yet seem detemined to undermine his confidence by playing him out of position. The really weird thing was Nigel taking off Lambert yesterday but putting Mayuka in the middle and still JRod on the wing. I noticed that Kelvin's long kicks were all aimed to the left from then on, at JRod --because he is a target man. Surely it would have made more sense to put Guly and Mayuka on the wings with JRod in the middle?

It's a bit like buying a Ferrari , using it as a tractor, then complaining it isn't very good.
