Olallana Posted 2 September, 2012 Share Posted 2 September, 2012 I usually hate to talk about old has-been but still.... I noticed the other day that Zambrotta is out of contract. Should we consider bringing him in until january or so if possible? Left back seems to be a waek position for us at the moment...

Bearsy Posted 2 September, 2012 Share Posted 2 September, 2012 I don't think we've got 25 overage players 35 years old, played 11 games for Milan last season.
kpturner Posted 2 September, 2012 Share Posted 2 September, 2012 When I counted we had 2-3 gaps. I wonder if we already have some out of contract targets? Doesn't seem to fit the policy we have adopted for incoming players though.

Completely agree and as I said I hate bringing this kind of name up but desperate times might need desperate answers. gutted that we couldn´t bring Olsson in but it is what it is now.. Maybe looking at this http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?39827-My-chat-with-Paul-Gilmour-and-briefly-with-adkins on to adkins.... just as i was getting into my car, I saw him leave the stadium, I got out to have a chat and ask him what he thought of today and if he was disapointed about the final few hours. His reply was " allways stuff in the pipeline, your just have to wait and see" he then done that cheeky smile and laughed and said his mind is now onto sunday. S-Clarke Posted 2 September, 2012 Share Posted 2 September, 2012 Well, we could do with a couple of experienced heads - that's for sure. I think Scholes is a fine example that class never goes, no matter how old you are. Would not hesitate in taking either if the opportunity arose. Giordano Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 (edited) World Cup winner ex Milan and Barcelona 35 years old Gianluca Zambrotta at SMS??.....good spot that he is a free agent and no question about his pedigree. He can show his medals to anyone in our dressing room and he knows how to defend and he knows how to attack from full back....but he is a bit old for a full back and if his legs have gone then its a no-go. If he can still run though thats another matter.... I'd say not only Fox and Shaw but Clyne and the rest of the team would learn from having a super experienced Italian professional defender like him in the team and especially in the back four. Would not be fazed by anything in the EPL thats for sure. I vote yes please, we need a LB and we need one that knows what to do and can perform instantly. david in sweden Posted 3 September, 2012 Share Posted 3 September, 2012 Who ? Didn't they sing 'Poison Ivy' in the early 1980's ? Actually... it was first written for /and recorded by... the U.S group the Coasters in the late 1950's. It was later covered by loads of British rock groups in the early 60's, but I liked the Hollies version myself.

pingwing Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 So is Ricardo Gardner, I'm sure we could get a few games of fitness out of him and then get him into a random backroom job picking out the best central american kids of the academy... JPTCount Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 I wonder if we already have some out of contract targets? Giordano Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 Fabio Grosso is also out of contract. 34 years old. 6ft 3". Left wing/full back. Between him and Zambrotta seems theres a couple of Italians available if we want them. Id prefer Zambrotta, busier player.

We don't have any spaces in the squad that can be filled (we can only name 23 due to not having 3 over-21 GKs), and we're not permitted to add any out of contract/free agents if we have available contracted players not already named in the squad. So unless we sign them before 4pm and get them into the squad before it has to be confirmed, we can't add anyone without releasing someone from their contract anyway, which they'd need to mutually agree. tajjuk Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 (edited) Asier del Horno, former Chelsea and Bilbao and Spain defender, think he is only 31. Is a left back. Agree though some of these frees would be cheap cover/competition if they are physically up to it. Any from:- Del Piero zambrotta Gordon Boruc Del Horno Would add to the squad and provide experience in positions we need to at least january. MerceSaint28 Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 I definitely think Boruc is a great shout...would feel far more confident about another left back and centre back cover as well Zambrotta, Grosso or Del Horno would be worth a year deal and even Gabbidon might be worth a punt. Can you imagine Seabourne playing in the Prem?? crikey that would be a disaster
skintsaint Posted 4 September, 2012 Share Posted 4 September, 2012 Same Borac who was pretty rubbish at Celtic in his last couple of seasons or a different one? saints_is_the_south Posted 5 September, 2012 Share Posted 5 September, 2012 2 current free agents who are both CB. Both getting on a bit, but both have an abundance of experience and could surely help us out until January: Per Kroldrup (33yr old former Danish international and ex-Udinese, Everton & Fiorentina) Fernando Meira (34yr old former Portugese international and ex-Benfica, Stuttgart, Galatasaray, Zenit St Petersburg & most recently Zaragoza)
