Martin is very, very raw still. No way ready for the Prem. I would prefer Fox or Richardson at CB in an emergency. Martin needs games and if he drops out of favour at Palace I'm sure he will return by mutual consent and go back out on loan either in the Championship or L1.

The most interesting thing in that forum posted link is that Butterfield has played cantre back for them in the past.

I dont recall Martin having trouble jumping off the ground when he played for us !

Personally, I've not really ever been that impressed. I know the "raw" line gets used a lot but maybe he's just not that good? That said, centre backs tend to mature so perhaps he will improve. Up until today though, he had pretty much featured in all their tonkings

Really? Not me, Martin in his proper position over Frazer or Fox would be prefferable, were he not on loan. Seaborne is never going to win World Player of the Year but as fourth choice now I'm slightly more confident, as long as he's truly put the horrors of last year behind him. And how good really is Stephens? He was getting good reports from people on here as a right back, is he as good a centre back now they've converted him?

We all know we need another CB, but what we have will see us through until January. It's not the terrible defence some people make out. Sure it'll ship some goals, but as long as the attacking department do their job, and the covering central midfielders, we'll pick up positive results. (and excitement along the way.)

He didn't even feature on the bench today for Palace. Makes me wonder if he'd be better off back here giving as cover?

Even if he would, we can't recall anyone on a season-long loan.

I'd also prefer Martin at CB to either Fox (looked terrible in the 10 minutes he covered there last season and not good in the air) or Richardson (looked pretty uncomfortable at times at Stevenage, whilst Seaborne looked composed alongside him). But Martin's tendency to hit Row NN with his clearances isn't a particularly useful quality in the Premier League, and we can't really be giving possession away that far up the pitch that often in this division.

Can't recall but Palace might agree to mutual termination to save his wages. Plus there might be a clause saying he can return if he isnt playing a certain proportion of games when fit and available. Afterall he is there to get games, if not he might as well train with us and play Dev squad.

I think I read something about a break clause in his contract? Could be wrong?

Frankly I can't be bothered to retrawl the Premier League/Football League loan rules to find out if this is a possibility - I do vaguely recall that season long loans can be ended during the Jan window though somewhere in the back of my head, so maybe... I need MLG to confirm, it's more of a CM kind of level of tedium...

Been pretty shocking fo far for Palace going by their forums...

Unsurprising, he wasn't all that great for us last season, which is why NA didn't play him unless he had no other choice.

Some of our fans vastly overestimate the qualities of very average football players.....like Dickson, truely woeful footballer

but some thought he was the bees bolloaks.

It seems they're playing him on the left side of defence - a position that he's shown he's not very comfortable playing in. If they played him on the other side then he'd be doing a damn sight better.

But Adkins played Guly whereas he didn't Martin.

You're missing window's point i.e. managers know more than our fanbase and there's a reason why some of our players don't feature despite protestations on here. If anything Guly totally disproves your point.

Play golf with a Palace fan. Said he was poor when he played!

Agreed, never understood the fuss about Martin, nowhere near good enough for us now. Even Seaborne is a class above him, and he's almost certainly not PL standard.

Disagree completely, whenever he played he was an excellent backup, no-one ever said he should be first choice ahead of Jos or Jose, but he is a darn sight better than Seaborne. With experience and coaching will be part of squad in the future I am sure. Needs experience, and some experience around him, probably not the best choice to go to Palace who are very poor this season, and if they are playing him out of position (which is right side of centre) then why is anyone surprised?

Personally I rate them both, they're still relatively young and will improve a lot in the next couple of years if we stick with them. Maybe not enough for the level we should hopefully be at by then, but at least they'll have a much larger sale value.

Seaborne was ahead of Martin in the pecking order until his injury. Apart from Peterborough away, he rarely let us down in League 1 and was brilliant in the first month last season. Don't understand why everyone is so down on him. His performances have been a level above Martin's. If he is better by a country mile, why did Pardew and Adkins always pick Seaborne ahead of him when fit?

Anyway whether you think that he "did alright" for us last season when called upon or not, you have to realise that it takes real class to be an EPL player, which is why Sharp,Hammond and Martin are on loan in the NPC and we're paying upwards of 15 million euros for a little known Uruguayan playmaker.
