Ash Posted 17 November, 2008 Share Posted 17 November, 2008 Would any experiences Ebayers be able to help me, I recently sold a **** load of old cds on ebay but one did not get delivered so the person has asked for their money back. I didn't send it recorded as it was only a few quid but something doesn't seem quite right about it to me, the person messaged me four days after the auction ended saying they hadn't received it and I didn't post it for a couple of days so it seems they were a bit keen to say they haven't got it. Do I have to give them their money back?

Do I have to give them their money back? hmmm, probably yes. Unless you have proof of postage, it can be argued you didnt post it. I always go to the post office to get a receipt to show I have posted it. This way you have a come back. But in the event of you not having proof of postage, I would just issue a refund. Unless your feedback is very high, then you will get a negative feedback from this person which could potentially affect your feedback rating. Ash Posted 17 November, 2008 Share Posted 17 November, 2008 I did get proof of postage but didn't post it recorded, do I still have to give them their money back? Is it worth taking it to the post office. Selling on Ebay is more hassle than it is worth

Is it worth taking it to the post office. Selling on Ebay is more hassle than it is worth Take a photocopy of the proof of postage then send it to them. They will then be able to take it up with ebay. To be honest, if you have sold it as 'first class' post, then thats all you have to send it as. The fact it is not recorded is not your fault (unless you stated it was to be sent recorded). They will be able to take it up with Royal Mail, as essentially, they are at fault. Explain to the buyer that you have sent it, that you have proof of postage too and that you will happily send this to them so they can take the issue up with RM. Otherwise people could just say they havent received the goods to get a refund and the goods. Hope that helps

Is it worth taking it to the post office. Selling on Ebay is more hassle than it is worth The proof of postage will enable you to get up to £36 compensation for a lost item. Also you have to wait 28 days (I believe) before filing a missing item claim, which means that that is how long the buyer should wait. However, eBay/PayPal require only 7 days before filing a claim. If the cost isn't great, give the little f*cker a refund and then claim for a lost item from the Post Office. When they do their investigation (yeah, right!) and find out that it has been delivered to him then you can report him for fraud to eBay. By the way, just to reiterate: The sender has to make the claim...

And as DSM says too, refund him, otherwise he may get nasty and leave bad feedback.
hamster Posted 18 November, 2008 Share Posted 18 November, 2008 (edited) I recently sold a **** load of old cds on ebay but one did not get delivered so the person has asked for their money back. Do I have to give them their money back? Ash, did you sell the CD's as a bulk listing and they are saying that one is missing from the consignment? If so, you could offer a pro-rata discount as a damage limitation basis. If it was a relatively small transaction, I would condsider offering the refund ONLY after they promise to leave good feedback. In my experience there are a small minority of 'chancers' on E-Bay, as in any other line of business. I've had similar experiences on E-bay and now make it absolutely crystal clear in my listings that I obtain POP's. It more or less stopped overnight. And don't forget that feedback is a two way street. I used to leave feedback early, when I got paid quickly, but again, I learnt the hard way. If you are selling, hold back until they have left it for you, then you have reserved your right to reply, and have a further opportunity to leave separate feedback if a problem materialises. I nearly gave up on E-bay altogether a while ago, but IMHO it is still a good way of obtaining a few quid in a crisis by having a clear out, and it's still a good way of opening alternative income streams if you have a good line to sell and know how to automate it. Al de Man Posted 18 November, 2008 Share Posted 18 November, 2008 I understand sellers can no longer leave bad feedback for buyers. (Possibly as long as they actually pay?) It's so that buyers aren't scared from leaving negative feedback for bad service in fear of receiving a retaliatory response.
hamster Posted 18 November, 2008 Share Posted 18 November, 2008 I had a spell recently where PayPal (the devil's spawn) held funds until my customers had left positive feedback or 20 odd days had passed. I was bemused as to why they had picked on me! Actually caused a wee cashflow problem at the time, but sorted now. The real reason I persevere is for the E-BAY USB crimbo lights, anyone else get a set last year? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EBAY-USB-XMAS-LIGHTS-NEW-IN-ORIGINAL-BOXES_W0QQitemZ320318892045QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320318892045&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318 Wonder what they'll come up with this year? Ash Posted 18 November, 2008 Share Posted 18 November, 2008 It was a single cd and I'm not that bothered about the money, it is more the fact that I cannot help but think they are trying to pull a fast one. Many thanks again, I shall remember you all in my will.
