The whole feature on us was bizarre, but we mustn't get into this debate as we cannot question how we're covered in the media apparently.

Why not? I adore Matty but even he wasn't that great. If it goes wrong after 2 months then go for us but not before anyone's even played.

Matty has been faint for his praise for us ever since Cortese took over. Anyone remember that pathetic Jeff Stelling rant against us with MLT sat in the background smiling smugly. I wouldnt be at all surprised if Merson had been primed about the empty seats too.

The empty seats were few and far between at the Wigan game apart from those in the away area where the tickets were returned by Wigan

Which always looks worse than it is because it's virtually behind the goal, and "easy" to spot on TV

Why they have empty seat areas behind a goal beats me

Our Northam Fans should go right across IMHO, with away fans on the corner(s)

There were a lot of empties in the Itchen/Chapel corner. But we do suffer from having the away supporters behind the goal at the Northam end when the away team has shocking support like Wigan. The TV picks up huge empty areas and the casual TV viewer/Merson assumes its our lack of support. I think this season there will be a general drop in attendances, not just a Saints issue. Prices for games are getting really silly. I'm actually surprised we got 29k for Wigan, I bet if it had been in November we would have struggled to get 26k.

You have to remember that a lot of people will have been on their summer holidays as well. Thought it was a reasonable turn out myself. If you want to see empty seats have a look at Wigan when they're at home.

Yes but Matty has a right to feel aggrieved over that for all the good he has done for our club. He's also paid for a season ticket this season a true saint.

He was a speaker at a St Marys' dinner a couple of years ago. He does the cheeky-chappy, lovable co-ckney rogue so well it's no wonder he got on with 'Arry. Tells a good story - usually about drink, drugs, gambling or being generally 'nawty', and readily admits he was a crap manager. He lives in the past and is out of touch with the modern, more intelligent and athletic game that football has become.

Bit of a knob really.

True.

Merson is a tit but I can kind of see where he's coming from. It's a lot of money and a huge risk as there were other parts of the squad that desperately needed attention. If GR struggles to fit in or can't settle here then we're gonna look a bit silly.

I dont believe there is a media bias or agenda against us - that sort of paranoia is a bit silly - what there definietely is though is a great deal of ignorance about the club in general - OK a fair bit of that is Sky and these pundits focus of the prem and the top 10 clubs, which you can understand as its who their target market is - the armchair fan. So whenever they 'comment' on us, they tend to use old cliches etc as they dont really do enough homework. Add to that that controversy is better 'telly' and you have your answers.

You could also argue that we probably dont support the media in their need for good stories - the 'Swiss' way tends to be more closed with a desire to treat business as confidential and private - Which while I agree with it, will mean we will be subject to a) more speculative stories, as ther is less word form the horse's mouth, and certainly while we sit in the bottom quarter of the table some 'mocking' usually agin based on ignorance. If we do end up progressing up the table, then our actions will speak louder than any words as they say... which would be just the way i like it! ;)

Merson, Lawro et al, simply ignorant about us and dont have any real interest in us either, so its alwyas nice when we prove them wrong!

And to be honest do we care, as it will be even more of a surprise to them when we win the Premier League in a couple of seasons ;-)

Fair point, but cant see that relationship mellowing or Matty being welcomed like a long lost son, whilst he still works in the media - I suspect that part of the reason that our old guard such as Lawrie and Matty were 'shown the door' was precisely because they are often called upon by the media for comment and NC wanted to stop the media being used to play out our business or dirty laundry. The recipe for the NC/Liebherr cake needed eggs, so quite a few were broken, but its just a shame that those eggs were very close to the hearts of fans.

That description covers the majority of football pundits in this day and age.

Hopefully will change in future - This is teh last generation that probably still moan about not earning enough out the game compared to today - although they did Ok, many ' peed it up the wall - will be interesting to see, if others like Neville come on board when they retire as they dont need the money any more to do media work - but I daresay Sky like the 'characters' in that Gillete Soccer Saterday - the better pundits (no disrepect to Matt) will end up commenting on big games at grounds, not stuck with Stelling in teh studio - where they are looking for thsoe who make watching monitors for 3 hours 'entertaining'

I meant on his comment today which was fine. Matty is my hero and the best player I ever saw. He was amazing not talking about that at all.

He was right about the empty seats vs Wigan! Poor show from us

Also surprised we didnt sell our allocation away at City or last season vs M'boro

Not got the fanbase some would like to believe

Stiill, at least our attendance won't drop by a third for our second home match of the season!!!

The fans are the soul of the club and won't let it die, huh?!

Unless you are one of about 6 clubs then the media/press are not really interested or knowledgable enough to form a decent debate about how good or bad we are,it's just the way it is.

Everybody else outside the big guns is 'plucky little (add team here)','lowly' or 'underdogs'.....when Ramirez signed there was a lot of negativity and little air time for us and him but if he had signed for one of the big boys the media would be all over it,drooling about what a bargain he is and how he will do great things in the prem.

I gave up reading newspapers a long time ago as they are basically bull****,half truths and twisted views....no matter what we achieve we will never be the darlings of the media whilst the likes of Merson, lawrenson and all the other out of touch, lazy dinosaurs are allowed to spout their bile.

Exactly, and we should be used to it by now.

I just hope we're not going to have whinefests about people like Merson and Lawrenson all season long because it's not going to change until we establish ourselves as a Top 8 side.

Love GSS but today Jeff and the panel really annoyed me. Made it sound like we'd sign 3 nobody's and dismissed us out of hand. We've proved our ambition and should be commended for this. Mentioning the Echo dispute was just pathetic from Jeff Stelling.

This summed it up for me also. It seemed to have been stage managed to be a total **** take session from the start. The only time anything positive was said was MLT sticking up for us regards the attendance.

On the Lawro incident the Irish Host (Insert Name as I forgot) stood up for us saying It would be great if he came to saints instead of L,pool or spuds. Some like to see the under dog/newly promoted do well and have no real club bias. Heard 5live have been positive also. There not all anal inserts.

He's a rambling idiot. I'm sure they only use him to made the rest of them look competent.

He's not wrong about the empty seats, though it would be helpful if the stadium and tv cameras weren't configured to point at Blocks 43 and 44 (usually segregation and the last section to go on sale), as well as the club for some reason not selling the front rows of Blocks 1-4 until last, along with the seats behind the Chapel goal. They do the same with the Itchen/Chapel corner but they're not showing as swathes of empty seats on the bloody telly every time a team attacks the Northam end !

PS I will concede defeat on the Lambert/Sharp appearance prediction. Mayuka and Rodriguez instead now. ;)

I thought he came over a total knob. However I do wonder whether it was just done to poke fun at Matt. They always tend to pick one of the guys in the studio to wind up about their old team. Phil Neal gets it quite a lot.

The best football commentators and pundits are on 5 live imo. Sky particularly panders to the plastics.

I personally have never have and will never will subscribe to Sky, although they try and get me to sign up often enough !

You could get a job as a pundit for sky then as you talk crap for the majority of time ;)

I thought considering 2 of those games were live on Tv the distance and the timing of them, made it a remarkable turnout. Look at the pathetic following by QPR at City yesterday and they had signed 12 new players! i doubt that will get picked up on/

Even by some of our owns fans it would seem, who take some odd pleasure in knocking us all the time.

Merson is moron-in-chief, the Grand High Moron, the Moron With The Child In His Eyes. An incontinent mouth, delivering slavering invective on seemingly very little knowledge and even less research, Merson appears to regard paid punditry as a noisy interlude between fried food breaks.

On Saturday afternoon, a discussion of Southampton’s new midfielder Gaston Ramirez was interrupted by Merson holding up a piece of paper, exclaiming: “Does that say ELEVEN MILLION?”

Merson, you see, was only now learning of a Premier League club’s record signing, via the crib sheet that had been placed before him. That’s the sort of calibre we’re dealing with here.
