itchen_dan Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 NabilHassan79: Championship club Charlton are in talks with Premier League side Southampton over signing 29-year-old midfielder Dean Hammond. #saintsfc Would be a solid signing for them. Saint Garrett Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 Loved having him here, been a top signing for us, sad to see him go but the right time probably, will do a great job for them
alpine_saint Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 Sad to see him go, never let us down. Scored the first goal of last season against Leeds, setting up a superb win and setting the tone for the next 45 matches.

ant Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 The timing's right and I think it would be a decent decision for Dean and his career, but I'll be genuinely sad when he does leave. Sort of an end of an era, if that makes sense.
pingwing Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 Perfect move for him, did a good job when called upon last season (forgetting his sending off against Reading). Better than L1 when we were there and a good captain of the club. He knows he wont get much of a look in this season so it will be good for him to take a first team role at CAFC (especially of dale stephens leaving for villa is true). Under Weststand Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 He was a great signing for us, lead from the front & has done the job we bought him for. Carlton would be an ideal fit for him I wish him nothing but good luck if he does go today.
JPTCount Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 slightly surprised at this, as Adkins made a point about how good it was for the youngsters having hard working, honest, professionals like Hammond butterfeild n chaplow in the squad. but if an offer comes in, we'd be stupid to turn it down. KelvinsRightGlove Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 Sad to see the guy go. Been a great captain for the club, this move would appear to suit all parties involved. Best of luck Deano.

Think we owe it to Deano that if an offer comes in from a club where he's likely to be a starter, then we give him the oppertunity to talk with them. It's a good suit for him, he wouldnt have to move his family if he didnt want to, Charlton are on the up & he has the experience they'll need to get them out of that division. As previously mentioned, if he appears for another club at SMS he should get a warm reception. Good solid performer at championship level, lacks the pace for top flight imho

dronskisaint Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 (edited) Agree that there will be a tinge of sadness if it is the end of his Saints career but this is evolution and he'd go with my thanks and appreciation for more than doing the job he was brought in to do. Never gave less than 100% and can do that for Charlton too. His house? Saints players and managers don't sell houses down here...they've arrived where they want to be and can come back when they retire...was probably bought with two promotion bonuses! david in sweden Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 if he'd been Lallana's age - and had a bit more of his talent, he'd be staying. but... he has been a good player...and seen us through the L1 seasons, and our Championship season ........really about his level. Hope he continues his career with a more success.
captainchris Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 Not so sure it's such a good idea to let him go myself . Gets quite an unfair press at times and though not a 'flare' player you do need one or two of his type around and at least one in the team. Doesn't spray Hollywood balls around like some but is still as good as those we have that do IMO. Sad to leave, when you need to dig deep he's good to have around.... Trouble is that midfield "sweeper" role already sees Schneiderlin and Ward-prowse ahead of Hammond, with Davis able to fill in there as well. Son of Bob Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 He's been a great player whilst he's been with us and has made a healthy contribution to our recent success. Chez Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 would imagine he contributed greatly to the great team ethic and spirit that helped us to double promotions. Hope this can be retained when the likes of Dean depart today and later in the coming weeks on loan. I have to say he is a far better player than people give him credit. I was concerned his lack of pace would have him found out in the Championship, but he had a great season and he replaced Cork and Morgan seamlessly when called on.
