Striker Billy Sharp has departed St Mary's to join npower Championship side Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Club in January, will link up with former Saints teammate Dan Harding at the City Ground.

Sharp moved to Southampton from Doncaster Rovers at the end of the last transfer window, scoring nine goals in 15 games as his new team secured promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

He scored five goals during pre-season and also netted in Tuesday's Capital One Cup second-round win over Stevenage.

However, the arrival of Emmanuel Mayuka and return to fitness of Tadanari Lee means that starting opportunities could well be limited for the frontman this season.

As such, he has been allowed to join up with his former Donny boss Sean O'Driscoll in Nottingham for the rest of the 2012-13 campaign.

Saints would like to wish Billy all the best during his year with Nottingham Forest.

Personally I'm quite pleased. I thought we might be stuck paying his wages whilst he was 5th or 6th choice. We need to lose a few to make room. Our wage bill must be getting out of hand.

I've never really rated him myself and didn't think he was good enough for the Prem. No pace, average touch, crap in the air, doesn't hold it up well, no trick, average movement and I'm not even sure he is the best finisher in the world. All just IMO of course.

Has to be one of the least surprising moves in football history seeing as NFFC had is player profile page up and ready months ago.

Totally agree

What's the point in it being a loan? May as well sell. Guessing he may not have really been our first choice when we bought him?

Pity, good lad and a good finisher, football moves on too fast these days. Forest could well be on for promotion themselves.

That was Hooper at the time

In the Jan window we clearly wanted Rodriguez or Hooper but Adkins knew Sharp could help get us over the line which obviously he did.

Doesn't sound like he particularly wanted to leave.

Always difficult to know the truth in these matters. I'm sure he wanted to stay, but if he wasn't gonna get many games then what's the point? I hope it's in his best interests though; would hate to think we've pushed him out.

Good luck Billy.

You have to feel sorry for players like Sharp, Harding, Barnard and Hammond who worked hard to get us to the premiership - and who have probably dreamed of playing at this level - and are on their way before the story has really even started without even getting a chance or a moment to enjoy it.

Do I think any of those 4 are really Premiership quality? No not really but I still feel a bit sorry for them.

Anyway I wish all 4 of them all the best and thank them for doing their bit for Saints - they all put their shifts in when it mattered!

Wondered the same myself, perhaps he was a bit of a panic buy after missing out on Hooper and J-Rod? Shame to see him go, seemed like a key member of the squad particulary personality wise. Guessing it's a loan deal and not permanent in case we need him should we be relegated.

This is common sense. Cracking Championship player but not quite Premiership standard.

This proves to me the club is being managed properly. If we go down then no doubt Billy will return to get us back. Forest have got a good deal but all is not lost for us.

"all is not lost for us" ? Why is there always a sinister undertone to your posts? What does this even mean?

I guess that's when it becomes clear that it's a job for them. Well paid but no sentiment.

of course he didn't. He finally get a shot at the Prem, but quite rightly IMO, Adkins showed no sentiment and upgraded to much needed pace and tricks. Not sure why everyone is "so gutted". I'd of been more gutted if we hadn't signed a striker with pace to replace him. Respect to Adkins, he hasn't held back and clearly knows exactly what needed improving.

Great business by the club, lets keep a drink driver who is a disgrace to the club and loan out a player who keeps out the headlines unless its from scoring or scoring day after his son dies.

Should of offloaded SDR and Guly instead.

perhaps there was no interest in Guly or SDR, or interest that met our demands. Besides both are midfielders and Sharp is a striker

yeah exactly this

just remember a lot of tossers that signed for us in the prem last time and just took the money, where as the players above really did us proud at times
