Billy Sharp - Joins Notts Forest on Season Long Loan

If you think JRod is a bizarre signing then you are not thinking straight IMO. Very clearly a replacement being groomed for Lamberts role.

I say bizarre as we spent an awful lot on him (some might say overspent) and he's being billed as "one for the future". He may be a replacement for Lambert, yet against man city when Lambert was dropped it was Guly who played up front. JRod has only been played left wing where he is clearly out of position.

For a newly promoted side, a transfer the size of Rodriguez's is a very significsnt investment for someone who apparently isnt yet going to be a first team starter in his chosen position. If that's the case that he won't usurp Rickie just yet, I think I'd have rather us looked to invest a significant sum in a first team keeper and to strengthen the defence.

We'll see, of course. But for now I'll continue to see it as a bit of bizarre signing for us at this point in time (of course if we sign another left back, another centre back and a keeper before 11pm then I may change my mind!)

Why is it? Jordan Rhodes - 8 million, Steven Fletcher - 12 million, J-Rod - 7 million. Based on that seems like good business and why don't you wait until he's played in his proper position before writing him off? Why do we have so many bed wetter fans or complete imbeciles like Alpine? Or is it because its the school, holidays?

1 goals every 2 games at top international level is pretty impressive. And its not spin, I stated a fact.

In any case, where have I said he's God-like or any other similar description? Simply that I'd prefer to have Mayuka than a Championship level striker who I seriously doubt would step up to Premier League level. How controversial. Sorry, next time I'll qualify my thoughts with an MLG style analysis.

Your entitled to your opinion but your putting Sharp and his abilities down. Last year in the championship which is one of the hardest leagues in the world Sharp scored 19 goals in 30 appearances. Mayuka scored 9 goals in 34 games in the swiss league which is ranked the 14th league in europe.

So if you said to me who would you rather have a guy who has a 63% strike rate in the championship last year or a guy who has a 26% score rate in the swiss league last year who would I choose?

As you would say I know who I would choose...

then why has there been hardly any (if at all) movement from the NPC to the prem..?

I dont know why everyone thinks Lee is so fast when i bet him and sharp are about the same sprint speed, just lee is a bit taller, Lee and new lad wont be 100% for sunday, so Sharp will deffo play sunday at some point, i hope Sharp stays hes quality on his day well finishing wise.

Should get rid of drink driving scum like Guly off our books instead.

Why put Rodriguez up front alone when he might not be ready for it yet, and even more why be critical of playing him when he proved against Man City that he was able to get forward with Lallana in support of a central striker AND defend in support of the left back, and was very effective in doing so ? He'll get experience there, fulfil an important role and eventually get moved up top (assuming he's not too good to move by then). He was impressive at City and no-one was against Wigan...

If you figures are correct, then apparently Mayuka scored 23 goals in 21 games in season 2010-11 for Young Boys (Wiki lists his stats as 32 league goals in 55 league games over 2 seasons).

I didn't think he was impressive against City, actually. I thought Guly did a much better job there when he replaced him.

My point stands; if he's "not ready yet for it" then £7M is a hell of a lot of money for a newly promoted club to spend, and then play him out of position (not sure how that is going to help him become ready for it, if I'm honest).

Because the teams at the top of the Championship signed the decent players from last season in January and July, and the top 3 teams are already in the Prem anyway ?

There has been. We bought Jay Rod and Clyne and could possibly be getting Phillips. Snodgrass who was joint top assist moved to Norwich. Mathew Lowton gone to Villa, Nick Powell gone to Man Utd, Gael Bigirimana gone to Newcastle, Jacob Butterfield gone to Norwich etc etc. There are loads of players as you can see here http://www.soccernews.com/soccer-transfers/english-premier-league-transfers/

I hope Billy Sharp doesn't leave. This is the league where the size of your squad makes a lot of difference, and even if he won't be regularly starting, he'll have his part to play. A good goal scorer is worth a fortune, and while Billy may have some failings, he's far better than some in this league.

He wants to play in the Premier League, he has his chance now. Selling him back to the Championship would be harsh on him. (Although looking through Cortese's financial glasses, lightening the load on the wage bill and getting a transfer fee would be a plus.)

Sharp as fast as lee??

No chance!

I think this thread is getting a little 'overheated' by some of the inflammatory remarks being made. Billy Sharp is a 'Saint' and will remain so for the considerable future. He just ain't scared of getting 'stuck in' whereas others appear to 'bottle' at the first challenge. Go for it Bill and prove the doubters wrong.

A better job doing what ? Neither attacking nor defending. We stopped playing down the left generally and started playing through Lallana only when Rodriguez went off, and conceded 2 goals in 30 mins rather than 1 in 60.

Just sell him, Forest are rich and we can pull their pants down for 4-5m for him.

He's a good poacher, very good in the champ but I have my doubts he can bring his a-game to the premier league. His movement isn't top class and he's not the quickest plus the pecking order for strikers has been reshaped a lot with 4-3-3 this season (he's best in the middle and is 3rd/4th choice for that roll and has a similar fight for a spot on the right).

Shame, nice guy and a decent player, but if we get a decent offer hands should be bitten off

Not knocking the lad but **** there is some serious spin on this....firstly he was joint top scorer with 6 other players. You make it sound like he was the best thing in that tournament. He had 6 games and scored 3 goals. Christopher Katongo scored 3 goals and won the player of the tournament award. Houssine Kharja scored 3 goals in 3 games, by your logic does that make him god?

But arguably he was.

Having watched the AFCON throughout Mayuka and Chris Katongo were the two best players in the tournament for me, and were key to Zambia going all the way. Now I've raved about Katongo for years but having seen Mayuka for the first time he looks a real prospect. He has pace, is deceptively strong, has a good touch, wonderful agility and most importantly the lad can finish.

If he can reproduce his AFCON form for us he could be a massive player for us. I'm delighted he's signed for us.

I think he's got a role still, he is the most predatory of our strikers in a bit of a Ted MacDougall (though with better control) manner. He's likely to be the one picking up the deflections, rebounds etc when we are pressing for a winner/equaliser or chasing a game.

I also think he has more skill than he's given credit for, I hope he stays.

But then you're an Internet website wum, so what does your opinion count?

Ha, WUM. coming from you! You're the sole reason why a good mate of mine cancelled his subscription to this forum. To be honest, I don't blame him. Why should somebody have to put up with threatening and abusive messages just for voicing an opinion that isn't the same as yours?

We also scored 2 goals in 30 minutes rather than 0 goals in 60 minutes, if you want to be that simplistic.

In any case, I thought Guly was the better player on the left, and Saints were a better team with RL on the pitch. Its just my opinion, so you carry on and disagree with it. I'm off out.

Agree with all of that.

We now have plenty of creative players but need someone to put the ball away when it is bouncing around the penalty area, Sharp is ideal. We can't rely on 30 yard strikes week in week out.

We're playing 4-3-3. That means 3 strikers up front. That means a good back up in each role, not just to cover injury and dip in form but to replace tired legs. That means six top strikers. We have Lambert (Sharp), JRod (Lee) and Ramirez (Mayuka) and then Puncheon and Guly who can play pretty much anywhere. We cannot really afford to offload a striker of Sharp's quality.
