Giordano Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 If you look at how we have been lining up preseason and how we've played the first three games its getting very clear what is our prefered formation. What is also clear is that we are looking to recruit new players who are already capable of playing to this new formation because some of our current squad either cannot or are struggling to adapt to it, or just plain dont fit anymore. I think the first quarter of the season , AT LEAST, will see us struggle to bed in this new way of playing. But if we get it right, by the end of the season we could be the next Swansea, and it could be the start of EPL and World domination with the Southampton Way next season. Barry the Badger Posted 31 August, 2012 Share Posted 31 August, 2012 It is worth remembering that it took Swansea some time to adapt to this league, they didn't even score for over a month.

I agree, but don't underestimate the modern footballer. I remember a great interview with David Beckham in which he said that any professional footballer worth their salt should be able to play in any formation and that this was almost irrelevant. As long as you were told your job, you would do it. Where it most often seems to break down is when the players are either confused about what is expected of them, or simply don't believe it will work - and this is a fault of the manager. Because you have to command the respect and support of your troops. I remember this game with Luggy where he was yelling at Beattie and Beattie was doing nothing asked, because he thought Luggy was wrong! Disaster...
