International Call Ups

Depends how you quantify relatively recently. Since 1998 Africa has had at least 5 entrants into the World Cup finals (that rose to 6 for the 2010 finals).

But I think you're right in a sense, when it was only a couple of African teams qualifying there was little other value for African teams. And perhaps that's still true with only 6 teams qualifying even now (Europe has more or less the same number of countries but in 2010 had 13 qualifying teams). The ACN does get bad press here because its held in winter during the season, rather than in the summer off-season (but that's dictated by temperature I guess, so unlikely to change).

January/February is mid-summer. I don't think climate has anything to do with it. In many parts of Africa seasons are notional, and more to do with rainfall than temperature.

Does anyone know if the re-arranged game is being televised? Can't find any info anywhere.

When mongo Childes announced it yesterday he said 4pm kick off, and the programme would start at 3.30pm. Looks like the TV schedules haven't been updated for that though.

http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/seven-saints-get-international-calls-626657.aspx

A number of Southampton players have been called up by their respective countries for friendly matches next week.

Artur Boruc, Steven Davis, Vegard Forren, Gastón Ramírez, Calum Chambers, James Ward-Prowse and Lloyd Isgrove will all join up with their national squads this weekend.

Boruc is back in the Poland squad after a two-year hiatus, and will look to win his 47th cap when they face the Republic of Ireland at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on Wednesday 6th February with a 7.45pm GMT kick-off time.

Northern Ireland captain Davis is in Michael O'Neill's squad for a friendly against Malta at the Ta' Qali National Stadium on the same date, with the match kicking off at 7.30pm local time.

Recent signing Forren is in the Norway squad for their friendly against Ukraine, which will be staged at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in Seville. Kick off is at 6.10pm local time on 6th February.

Ramírez will travel to Qatar for Uruguay's friendly against world champions Spain, which takes place at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha from 9pm local time next Wednesday.

Ward-Prowse and Chambers are in the England Under-19 squad for their friendly against Denmark, which takes place at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster on Tuesday 5th February with a 7.30pm kick-off time.

Another Saints youngster, Jack Stephens, is currently on stand-by to be called into Noel Blake's 18-man party for that game if required.

Isgrove has been called into the Wales Under-21 squad for the first time having been selected for their friendly against Iceland at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli on Wednesday 6th February for a 3pm kick-off.

The seven players will link up with their countries after this Saturday's First Team and Under-21 fixtures. They will then return to Southampton in the latter half of next week ahead of the following weekend's matches.

Young striker Ryan Seager has already been called into the England Under-17 squad for their Algarve Tournament games against Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands.

Another mammoth journey for Gaston!

Really surprised not to see RL in the England squad. Can't say I'm upset from a Saints perspective but gutted for the bloke that whatever he does he can't get into the squad. Much better than Welbeck, Sturridge and Carroll.

Edit: this may be premature, assumed the England squad had been announced having seen the OS article. Can't find it anywhere though so assume the squads not been announced

Cleverley is one of the most average players I've ever seen in an England shirt. An utterly beige player.

Defoe is the greediest player ever, and just seems like c*nt. Sturridge did well for Bolton on loan, something like 10 goals in 10, but hasn't really progressed since. Goal there, but he missed an utter sitter earlier.

Clive Tyldsley was running through various players

Oxo, Lescott, I think Cleverley he said have played 3 times for their club since January: sorry but that is an F'ing appalling selection process.

To be fair......

As much as Cleverley is utter turd; what are the options?

We need to face facts that England have very average players right now.

as i posted earlier...

Our players are very, very underrated.

- If Johnson can play for England, so can Clyne.

- I haven't seen a better left back in England than Luke Shaw this season. Ashley Cole is still a top, top player, as is Baines but Shaw isn't far from that standard and he's getting better and better.

- Cork is far better than tripe like Rodwell, Livermore, Henderson, Shelvey, Cleverley - FAR better.

- For Lallana, see the same as above and add in the likes of greedy cloggers like Lampard, Gerrard etc. Yes, they WERE great players but they haven't got half the skill that Lallana has. The nearest player to Lallana, ability-wise, is Joe Cole. That said, Lallana's season has been arguably inconsistent and has also been injured for a while, which unfortunately means it takes time for him to bed back in and find form and fitness.

- Lambert is simply a better footballer than Bothroyd, Zamora, Welbeck and Sturridge. That said, he's 31 and despite the fact that wouldn't really affect his game, he's not a "diamond earrings, braaaaaaaaaap-braaaaaaaap,Taio Cruz, white-booted, sweatbanded One Direction " type of footballer. His face doesn't fit. It's a bloody shame, really.

- For Rodriguez, see above with the exception of maybe Sturridge. Having said that, he shows far more technical and finishing ability than Sturridge but he's a not a "braaaaaap-braaaaaap-in-the-club" footballer either. Unless he goes to a bigger club, he'll never get a chance.

Despite all this, I'm partly delighted they're not in the squad for selfish reasons. They'd be surrounded by self-absorbed, overrated knobbers and I wouldn't want our players to absorb any of that. That said, it's very selfish of me and in my heart of hearts, I'd be delighted if some of our players got capped.

Additionally, I still do believe they're going to have to play a good season or two in the top division before they might get a genuine chance. Whether that's with us, who knows? One things for sure though, our players are technically a lot, lot better than many of the players in teams above us.

Jack Cork? Adam Lallana? ;)

Rose tinted glasses aside, I wouldn't disagree too much. But only because that I think Cleverley is a plainly average player, despite Fergie (who knows a player) clearly rating him. I hope and think Jack Cork will get his chance (and I have always thought and still think he is better than Morgan, which has always been an unpopular view on here). Lallana; nowher near international class, an attacking midfielder who has scored, what? 2 Premier League goals? No way.

Lallana has still scored more league goals this season than Danny Welbeck.

If your basis for international recognition for attacking players is solely goals, what about Jay Rodriguez and Jason Puncheon? They have outscored Welbeck and are both close to Sturridge.
