International Call Ups

Uruguay have to be one of the most over rated sides in international football at the moment. A defence that makes ours look world class and hoof-ball on the attack, Ramirez hasn't had the opportunity to show too much this half as the midfield been by-passed for the most part.

Alvaro Pereira in particular is shocking.

Japan v Brazil, lunch time Kick off on a Tuesday in Poland is a bit random isn't it?

Probaly about half way and lunchtime in Poland might well be evening prime time in Japan. Early morning TV in Brazil though.

Saves all the European based Japanese and Brazilian players hiking half way round the world in either direction for a kick about too.

Plus Japan are in Paris today, playing at the SDf tonight, don't know where Brazil are playing, more than likely somewhere in Europe though.n

Guess that makes sense and will get a good tv audience, can't imagine they'll get too much of a crowd in at Wroclaw!

Yoshida captained Japan to an away win over France last night. They got a 1-0 win in the 88th min.

Yoshida had a quite a reasonable game at the centre of a Japanese defence which looked all at sea on crosses and corners. the French had a host of chances but either wasted them or were kept out by the Japanese keeper who had a bit of a stunner.

French midfield was pretty awful and Morgan must be racking his brain to work out what he has to do to get a call up whilst that idiot Deschamps is at the reins, dropping down to League 1 has cost him on the international front. Still it was a depleted French side and if they don't find a bit more oomph and efficacity they're going to get hammered by the Spanish on Tuesday.

?? I wonder if that was the same fella who was in goal in their famous win over Australia in the Asian Cup Final ?

Can't recall his name, but he kept a clean sheet until Tadanari Lee popped up with his extra time winner.

Stupid tournament. Someone should tell them they are idiots for running it so frequently.

Every 2 years, is that too frequently (in my opinion it is because I hate international football)? Its happened twice in 2 years 2012 & 2013 because Blatter insisted it was changed to odd-numbered years to avoid World Cup years.

Yes it is. It's like holding the European championships every two years.

As I said I don't really disagree with you, but you have to remember that until relatively recently Africa only had one or two entries in the World Cup, so there was no real motivation to have it less frequently, and in addition it used to be that the majority of the players played in their home countries. Its only a pain they have it every 2 years because it affects us Europeans. As I said I hate international football anyway, personally I would limit internationals to a 4 week period every summer and have done with it.

Depends how you quantify relatively recently. Since 1998 Africa has had at least 5 entrants into the World Cup finals (that rose to 6 for the 2010 finals).

But I think you're right in a sense, when it was only a couple of African teams qualifying there was little other value for African teams. And perhaps that's still true with only 6 teams qualifying even now (Europe has more or less the same number of countries but in 2010 had 13 qualifying teams). The ACN does get bad press here because its held in winter during the season, rather than in the summer off-season (but that's dictated by temperature I guess, so unlikely to change).

Those of us with long memories and longer beards can recall a time when we played FIVE Englishmen who'd all captained England (early 1980's) but now I see that we have two players who have captained internationbal sides. Namely ...Steve Davis (NI) ...and Maya Yoshida for Japan.

Whilst we maybe not talking top level sides... it's encouraging that we do have such players in the squad.

Zambia win 9-8, which is bad news for us, means Mayuka will be away:

19th January - 10th February 2013 in South Africa.

and look at what he'll be missing ...Everton (H) Man Utd (A)..Wigan ( A) and Man.City (H) ...that fixture sequence looks a bit familiar.... still if he isn't a first team regular by then - it won't matter too much !

I see England have put out a really exciting lineup for tonight, how so ****ing depressing that is.Like alot of people have said on here the international setup has become a real turn off.

Very dull...treating Poland like Spain. Milner and Cleverley will worry them for sure.

Best player from Friday (AOC) dropped.

Zzzzz

The worst thing is the widespread belief in the media that the approach is right....focus on the youth in time for 2014.

What no one seems to be mentioning though is that this ultimately translate to a selection policy whereby if you are young and English and play a handful of games for a top 5 side, you will get an England call up.

Welbeck, Cleverly, Sterling and now Jenkins are U21 standard and should continue their learning there.

The inclusion of youth plus the obsession with tippy tappy football, trying to emulate Spain means that the England set up just feels very confused at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised to see us outplayed by Poland tonight.

Tom Cleverley is 23; might be tough for him to continue his development in the U21s...

*switches annoying MLG mode off*

Haha, fair enough, thought he was younger but still not sure he's done enough to be starting every game for England. How many Utd games has he started? Must be low double digit figures?

* goes off to conduct MLG style research to understand if Cleverly was 21 when the current U21 qualifying campaign started*
