International Call Ups

Now we have some Internationals it might be an idea to have a thread to keep an eye on them.

So far have seen Davis called up by Northern Ireland and Clyne picked for Eng U21's - this is in addition to JWP being in the U19s and Shaw, Chambers and Stephens on standby for that squad.

Lee picked for Japan.

Assume Zambia have a game? Fox probably for Scotland if they do (Im not mentioning a certain South American nation)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yoshida played 90mins for Japan who won 1-0 vs UAE.

Clyne unused sub for Eng U21's

JWP played 70mins for Eng U19s who lost 3-1 to Germany.

Ramirez on as a Uruguay sub for 30mins vs Columbia (4-0)

Clyne played 2nd half of England U21's win over Norway

Yoshida played 90mins in Japan's 1-0 win over Iraq.

Lallana an unused sub for England vs Ukraine

Davis played 90mins as N Ireland drew 1-1 with Luxembourg

Ramirez played 90mins in Uruguay's 1-1 draw with Ecuador

I reckon Guly will get the call up.

Lallana for England? ;)

In The Times this morning they discussed the lack of young players coming through for England, especially in midfield. In particular they mention the likes of Cleverly, Wilshere, henderson and Rodwell.

It says that Cleverly, who is in the England squad, has only started 8 games for manu and having seen him on sunday I was not over impressed with what I saw. If Hodgson was at St Marys he must have been really impressed with Lallana and also Clyne. Lallana has certainly made the step up to premier level and does not look at all out of his depth or overawed.

And Clyne has to be one of the best prospects, and signings that we have made in recent years and hopefully he will prove himself for England U21. Again he hasn't looked at all overwhelmed against either of the manchester sides (needs a pair of non-slip boots though ;) )

Just watched the first half of the Japan game and can not say i'm impressed. I desperately want this lad to be good (god knows we need more defensive options) and i will give him the benefit of the doubt. However based on the 45 mins i just watched he needs to step his game up if he is going to be better than what we have.

On the plus side its a poor game generally and it might be a case of not reading too much into this performance so far. Here is looking forward to a better second half.

I'll obviously wait until he's got plenty of game time under his belt for us before making any judgement, but I do feel that CB is the one position we didn't want to take any sort of gamble. We could have done with a solid, dependable, late 20s CB who has done it in the Prem, if we'd brought Yoshida in on top of that, then it would make sense.

Japan have won 1-0 and Yoshida played the full 90 minutes. He played on the right side of the 2 centre backs. Very difficult game to judge him as UAE were no real threat at all. He looked better in the second half but UAE looked worse!

On the plus side he got 90 minutes which is good for fitness and he hasn't picked up an injury.

Do most CBs view themselves as capable of playing on either side ? I seem to recall we play Jos on the right and Jose on the left, and I really think our current strongest combination to try is Jos and Yoshida.

I'm not sure how the CB's themselves view it but certainly I do recall something, perhaps an interview, from Adkins talking about playing a right footer on the right and a left footer on the left. I would suggest it didn't matter so much when CB's were stoppers and little else, but now they are expected to be more comfortable on the ball and be more accomplished in their touch and passing, this is more important? I would agree that on this basis, Yoshi is more likely to play on the right alongside Jos, but who knows what Nigel has lined up.

We play:

Clyne-Fonte-Hooiveld-Fox

So Yoshi appears to play the correct position to replace Fonte.

No, Jose plays on right (next to Clyne who is RB) and Jos on left (next to Fox who is LB). I know you don't get to games but i thought you at least saw some on the box. But even though you got that wrong you seem to have got right that the combination would be Yoshida and Jos, whereas Seaborne would be better suited to playing alongside Fonte if Jos was unavailable.

Ramirez on as sub for Uruguay after 56 minutes, they still got thumped by Colombia though 4-0.

Still I guess the less he plays the better it is for us, anyone see that match?

They were 3-0 down before he came on.

Here are some of the quotes from the FIFA web site

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/matchcast/index.html?matchid=300170265

2' FALCAO (Colombia) scores!!

3' He's the form man in European club football and FALCAO (Colombia) has made an early mark in Barranquilla, blasting past Fernando MUSLERA (Uruguay) to give Colombia a 1-0 lead

19' Uruguay came into this match without a defeat in their five previous qualifying matches. But Colombia have been bright, with Falcao the focal point, and the hosts are good value for their lead.

47' Colombia get off to a dream start in the second half as Teofilo GUTIERREZ (Colombia) races through on to an incisive pass from James RODRIGUEZ (Colombia) to rifle a low right-foot shot beyond Fernando MUSLERA (Uruguay).

53' Another brilliant goal by Colombia, and it's the same combination that undoes Uruguay, with James RODRIGUEZ (Colombia) picking out Teofilo GUTIERREZ (Colombia) with an inviting low cross that the Catrachos No19 smashes into the roof of the net. The crowd are loving this.

56' Gaston RAMIREZ (in) comes off the bench to replace Maximiliano PEREIRA (out) (Uruguay)

61' The entire crowd here in Barranquilla is already in celebration mode, and no wonder, with Colombia three goals up and playing some sparkling football.

64' Fernando MUSLERA (Uruguay) prevents Colombia extending their lead yet further, diving low to his left to smother a powerful low shot from the excellent James RODRIGUEZ (Colombia).

86' Colombia are cruising to a vital victory here and, with the inidividual talent they have within their ranks, they could be the team to watch over the remainder of the South American Zone qualifiers. Their next test comes at home to Chile on Wednesday. Let us know how you see that one going in FanChat.

90'+ The rout is completed in injury time as Juan ZUNIGA (Colombia) makes it 4-0, working a one-two with FALCAO (Colombia), jinking away from his marker and drilling a low shot under the body of Fernando MUSLERA (Uruguay). A great goal to cap an outstanding Colombian performance

I watched the game last night and have to say it was weird watching a live game from Colombia being played in glorious sunshine while it was pitch black here!

Anyway, the game was over 3 minutes into the second half as a rampant Colombia destroyed a very ordinary Uruguay side. GASTON came on for the last 30 minutes ans his side were already 3-0 down and playing like a beaten side.

GASTON whenever he got the ball looked very composed, he has a great touch and holds the ball well. He didn't have much of a chance to shine purely because the game was over really by the time he came on. However the brief glimpse i got to see of him was encouraging.....and thank god he wasn't injured!

Agreed with your summary especially the bit about him not getting injured. Uruguay were awful but some nice moments from Ramirez without anything spectacular. Looking forward to next week.

We had the game live on satellite here as well. As you say, he came on for the last half hour when Uruguay were already 3-0 down. They lost 3-0, not 4-0.

GR was pretty solid when he came on. Strong on the ball, not easily muscled off it. He popped up on the left and the right up front, but also chased back well. He was all over the pitch, and apart from giving the ball away once playing out of defence by trying to be too clever about 25 yards from his own goal, he was IMO Uruguay's best player (along with Forlan).

Their game against Ecuador on tuesday night is also on live here, so I might get another look at him.

I liked what I saw, and his style of play looks good for the PL. A midfield including him, Morgan & Lallana is an exciting prospect.

Yoshida playing number 22. 1-0 at ht. Just seen Iraq goalie pull off an absolute worldie save....amazing...save of the season already done and dusted i think...

Hows Yoshida looked?

UK based Japan football writer said to me he thinks Yoshida will do well as he has "excellent positional sense, is assured in possession and scores goals. Future National team Captain. He is quick enough and that positional sense really helps him too, and strength wise has matched some very tough players."

Not done anything wrong. What is striking though is how similar to Saints that Japan play. I swear change the kit and it could be Saints. The cb's pass it around, the fb's look to push on, lots of passing, hardly any "hoof" always on the floor. If hes ok playing for Japan that way hes def ready to play for saints. Im feeling reassurred.

Its a full house, big noisy crowd. He wont get worried by emirates stadium and 60,000 put it that way.

fwiw. He is playing the more withdrawn of the two cb's - what used to be called the sweeper. Seems mobile and plays with head up.

I'd say Japanese players tend to run directly with the ball a lot more than Saints, but they may have changed that recently, it's not like I've been paying them much attention. Certainly seemed to be Tadanari Lee's preferred method when he first arrived.

Japan win 1-0 and we could have at least one Saint playing in Brazil 2014...Yoshida plays the full 90 against ok not world class but not too shabby opposition and does not get injured or look out of place, far from it, Japan look like a well organised team and he has got composure for sure. A nice warm up for Arsenal i reckons...I think we are going to like him.

Apparantly he tried an overhead kick which went over the bar?
