Gazump, gazumped, gazumption...

Many of these phrases have been used about the Ramirez deal and it got me thinking - when have we actually been gazumped in a sitatuon that was public knowledge? I'm sure it happens behind the scenes when you think you have someone and then they go elsewhere but the public ones are what im thinking of.

Probably a lot less than some think.

I can remember that Halls had pretty much agreed to come here and it had been on the OS I think and then he went to Reading.

Can anyone remember any others? Has to be a genuine gazumping not where the club decides not to buy the player.

Note: Leave Buttner out of this as nobody really knows what happened apart from he signed for United over a month after our deal stalled.

Depends how far back we're looking. I can't really think of any under NC but Dawson and Reid spring to mind when they went to Spurs from Forest. Maybe the Mido deal as well but can't really remember what happened there.

I seem to recall we were going to sign Tore Andre Flo at the same time as Egil Ostenstad but something happened then... struggling to remember it now though.

There was a CB that ended up at Cardiff I think which I can't remember the name of.

Darren Purse. No big deal that we missed out there

Dawson and Reid when they left Forest...

From memory, while Spurs came in with a joint bid for the two, we were only ever interested in Reid and had a £4m bid accepted. However, he told us in no uncertain terms that he wasn't interested, mainly due to our rather one-dimensional approach in our relegation season where everything was launched to Crouch in the hope that someone would do something with the knockdowns.

Spot on. It was when Souness came in and we had about 11 foreign lads on trial. Can remember watching it on South Today.

Matt Elliott. Pretty sure we pretty much had him tied up in a deal from Oxford, then at the last minute Leicester came in for him and he went there.

Andy Reid pretty much laughed in our faces when we had an offer for him accepted.

Michael Dawson was meant to be part of that deal, I recall.

I seem to remember we also wanted Anthony Gerrard from Walsall but he ended up at Cardiff. Now plays for Huddersfield.

Alun Armstrong from Stockport all but done and suddenly signed for Boro.

Ha Ha! I remember ringing up teamtalk when i was at work and they had announced on there that he had signed for us, then the next day he signed for Boro!

I loved TeamTALK.

Remember the Vialli rumours? Used to phone it all the time!

Ah yes teamtalk 0898 12 11 78 from memory - spent hours on the work phone listening to reports of Petter Rudi (and most other Norwegian players it seemed) who were signing for us. If my company at the time had ever run a phone report of numbers dialled and the cost I would have been in serious s***.

You've just named another 'gazumpee'

I can remember that. He went to Sheff Weds, and Norway were playing a day or 2 later on Eurosport, so I settled down to watch it to see what we missed out on and he scored a damn 40 yard thunder-bolt volley!

Could you also include players that were already here but at the end of their contract (or loan)? Thinking about Eyal Berkovic (loan) who went to West Ham and Hassan Kachloul who went to Villa (agreed with Ipswich first so a double gazumped).

Looking back I wonder if the Norwegian reporter they kept speaking to actually existed or was just someone putting on an accent :)

Rumour had it that his missus didn't want to come to Southampton.

Rumour also had it that WGS had the deal for Saha and Malbranque lined up with Fulham but Rupert wouldn't come up with the cash.

£7m for the pair but Lowe put the question to WGS "Why make our rivals financially stronger?" - source: WGS' autobiography.

The pay phone in our school allowed you to call these numbers for free as you only needed to put money in when you wanted to talk. At least i assume it was free....

With flo, the deal was done and agreed, but we couldn't get granted a work permit from the home office, a few months later Chelsea got him and the work permit was granted for them

London-centric, Chelsea supporting Home Office staff; or good, old fashioned bribery?

John Halls.

Was going to be one of our first signings under Burley iirc, he was shown around the training ground and passed his medical. All done.

Then Reading came in and it was over, he then joined them instead.

That was absolute ******. I remember Coleman commenting from the training ground on Sky Sports *That's the 3rd time they (Saints) have come in for him (Malbranque). He does not want to leave and we want to keep him".

We definitely wanted Malbranque but he was not interested in joining Saints. Saha at that time was one of the hottest prospects in the Premier and we had absolutely no chance of landing him.
