Walking from SMS to Portswood area- best itinerary

Ok so I'll be going to St.Mary's for the first time next Saturday and I am planning on walking there since last season I kept seeing a good number of fans walk back through Portswood which should mean it's feasible. So I was wondering if anyone (who's done it before or not) could suggest to me the best way to walk up to/from the stadium?

I know there's a way along the Itchen which could do it now while the sun is up for long but I'm a bit worried about doing it in Winter when most if not all of our matches will be over in the dark.

So yeah, help is appreciated. :p

You can walk by the Itchen if you go to the end of Priory Rd and walk around Horse Shoe bridge, this takes you to the walkway, loads of people do it all year around. Nice walk this time of year. Hope this helps, cheers.

Easiest way is just down towards Bevois Valley and then take a left down Mount Pleasant road. Past the school, over the level crossing and follow the road on up which comes out opposite the Shell garage. Useful for going back that way after the game too as you avoid the bottleneck of the footbridge; if Britannia Road is open you can walk that way, or skirt along the right hand side of the queue for the footbridge and use the underpass.

That's the route Scally has described, and the one I use. I've never had a problem after dark, as there are plenty of others going the same way. The only problem with this route is the bloody dogsh!t on the boardwalk. :x

Just out of interest, what are you going to watch next Saturday?

Sorry I meant Sunday

Cheers for the help guys! I will go down to St.Mary's before Sunday so I'll take the Itchen way down (think I know where it starts-not Google Maps yet) and probably come back through Mount Pleasant/Bevois Valley, just to make sure I've got an alternative under my belt.

Much appreciated!

I live in Portswood and always pub-crawl my way to and from SMS.

Few drinks at home

Pint cocktail in the Hobbit

Pint or 2 in the Rockstone

Pint in the Alex

Pint, pitcher and grub in the Giddy Bridge

Hop, skip and a jump across the park towards the KA for a few more drinks

Perhaps a drink in the concourse.

Watch the match.

Repeat in reverse.

Fact; I conceived, designed and built the piles and wall that now support the said boardwalk...........not that anyone on here will give a sh1t............unlike the dogs that now apparently enjoy sh1ting all over it.

Well I for one would like to say a bit thank you for that, I reqularly use it as part of my running route now, so much better than the old dirt track.

I used to walk along there before they built the boardwalk: it occasionaly got interesting when the tide was in, and on a really high spring completely impassable. It used to be a difficult, muddy climb up to Priory Road until some volunteers improved it: "The Alan Jones Memorial Steps".. Stumpy himself would probably have said "bah humbug"...
