Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 If he were to drop his wages to a reasonable level (circa £40k pw), and his transfer value were no more than £7m, would he be worth signing. Although he struggled last season, his sides profligacy was one of the main issues he ended without a number of assists. Considering this was 1 season after being named Villa's player of the year, I think he would be a very decent buy. He's really not that bad, and would be great to play on the left side of midfield. What do people reckon? The old addage of buying a good player off a bad year.

Saint Charlie Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 Yes but it won't happen. Players very rarely will drop wages. Downing will get games at Liverpool anyway, just might be on the bench more.
SuperSAINT Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 If he was 7 million then yes. But they ain't never going to take a hit like that on the transfer fee.
scott_saints Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 Why would he willingly drop his wages? He would also cost more than 7m. But yeah, he'd be a decent signing. Odd thread though.
The Kraken Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 No. He's 28 years old now and on the downturn of his career. He plays in a position that requires pace and he'll be getting slower as the years have gone by. We'd likely only get a year or two of top level service out of him, his career then will probably see him changing positions and moving inside rather than on the wing. £7M and £40K a week would be an enormous sum to pay for someone like that. jjsaint Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 No. No. No. No. No. Maybe somewhat better than what we have, but IMO we could do better. A signing like this near transfer deadline day would have 'relegation battle' written all over it.

rshephard3 Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 Looking from the outset in this transfer window, players like Stuart Downing, Adam Johnson and Hugo Rodallega are exactly the sort of players I was expecting us to try to presuade to come to Saints. Think he would be an excellent signing for sure.
CanadaSaint Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 Never particularly rated him (very left-footed and quite uni-dimensional) - and he doesn't fit the "young and destined to get better" criteria we seem to be following.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 28 August, 2012 Author Share Posted 28 August, 2012 Sorry, the only reason this came about is that there are rumours that Adam and Downing are being moved on for Liverpool to brimg in Sturridge, and I was trying to think as to whether a new start would be of interest to him down here. If Liverpool were to get rid of him there is no way he would keep his current wages.
saintfully Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 It's a no from me. Maybe three years ago but, as The Kraken points out, he's now too old and too predictable - I think the money could be better spent.

old_southy Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 If Jarvis goes for £10+ he would be a steal. Would be good as a loan signing. Downing would be better than what we have now in terms on wingers and players who are suited to the 433 system. However, he's now another who is massively over priced based on his actual abitilty and better value is available elsewhere for sure.

The Kraken Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 very good player, makes you wonder what they were asking for if Man City couldnt agree! There were reports that the transfer fee being offered was only around £6M or £7M; which (even despite being in his final year) is comparitively low. You could argue that he's worth that much to Swansea just if he stays for one final season and helps them to push on; £7M doesn't necessarily get an awful lot these days in the UK market. DT Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 And? I didn't realise that we weren't allowed to discuss anyone that CDAJFU. There is no thread for that anymore. If you make the subject header 'Stewart Downing...' it is somewhat disappointing to click to read and then discover that those three dots do not mean a wink and a 'he might be on his way' or a similar link to at least something resembling a firm indication of said player but instead indicate a 'what about him then, in the best of all possible worlds, if we could afford it, and he wanted to come to us. And stuff.' It's a bit of a let down, if I'm honest. Which I just have been. Sorry.

Last year of his deal, doesn't want to stay at Swansea etc etc get in there NC/NA. Seems an odd one this, did Sinclair not learn what happens to young English players at big clubs with wealthy backers? Or from the Adam Johnson situ? He's a decent player, but can't help but think it's only going to be a poor move for the guy. On Downing, for me, no thanks. Doesn't fit with what it appears the management seem to be trying to do. We are clearly trying to build a certain philosophy of players we bring into the club, and Downing does not fit into that. I'm not going to say he is no good, he has played a lot of PL games and earned a fair few England caps (I do wonder whether he would have got so many if her were right-footed & sided). However, as has been mentioned, I do think he is a player with potential never quite fully maximised, and appears to be on the decline as a footballer. Strikes me as more of a West Ham/QPR type signing - I for one, rightly or wrongly, am happy to have Saints not follow that same old route. But hey, what do I know?
