Player from Barca, mentioned in the Sunday times:

Elsewhere, Southampton are attempting to conclude a deal for the young Barcelona central defender Andreu Fontas. The promoted Premier League club are understood to have offered a deal worth €6m for the Spain Under 21 international.

Fontas, 22, has been a fringe member of Barcelona's senior squad. He made six Primera Liga appearances in the 2010/11 season then missed the majority of their last campaign recovering from anterior cruciate ligament surgery. A converted holding midfielder, Fontas is the type of technically able central defender in demand with English clubs.

Don't know who he is but thank f*** we are finally getting some decent CB rumours. Lets conclude 1 early this week, and then if there is time and cash left, another 1 would be useful later on.

Possibly the 1st of 2 CB's? Wouldn't have massive confidence in this young kid plugging the hole straight away. I think we need a top quality ''here and now'' CB, that can walk straight in.

We are now grateful we are getting decent rumours? OMG!

Don't know much about him but I'm hoping for bit more experience/age/maturity at CB.

One position where those qualities are genuinely worth something.

Full name: Andreu Fontàs Prat

Squad No: 26

Position: Center back

Date of birth: 14 November 1989

Place of birth: Banyoles, Spain

Height: 1.86 m (6 ft 1 in)

Weight: 89 kg (196 lbs)

Andreu Fontàs was born in Banyoles, a town in the northeast part of Catalonia. It was there Fontàs made his first steps in football. He joined his first football academy at his hometown club at the the age of six. He stayed with CD Banyoles for eleven years, but in 2006 Fontàs joined Girona FC, a bigger local club.

In 2007, Andreu was approached by FC Barcelona's officials and they offered him to join La Masia. He joined Barca's youth ranks at the age of 17 as a defensive midfielder. In Barcelona he started to play in the heart of the defense, as a center back. After Fontàs' first year in the academy he was promoted to Barcelona B.

Fontàs immediately became a important player for Barcelona's second team. He was used as a holding midfielder and as a defender. Andreu played 72 games for the B team in three season and he also scored two goals. On 17 March 2011, as a result of Eric Abidal's absence, Fontàs was promoted to the first team.

But the wasn't his first rodeo with the big boys. Fontàs made his official debut on 31 August 2009 in a La Liga game against Sporting Gijón. Since his debut he made a few occasional appearances, most of them as a starter in less important matches. Altogether Andreu has nine first team appearances and he also scored his first, and so far only, goal, in the Champions League no less.

In international football Fontàs played with every Under-age team Spain has to offer. However, he is still waiting for his senior team call-up.

Profile

Andreu Fontàs is a commanding center back, but he isn't only limited to that position. He can move up to play defensive midfielder and this year he proved that, if necessary, he can fill in at left back. His tackling is excellent, but he struggles when he faces speedy opponents as he doesn't possess the necessary pace.

Great. He's going to fit right in with the rest of our squad.

See this guy is left footed. We need a right footed CB. Hooiveld will do a good job, it's Fonte that needs replacing.

Actually, maybe we're looking at proper cover/competition for both sides? Who is the other left sided cover......Seaborne, not really up to standard if required.

And fonte has no cover what so ever. I'm pretty sure we'll be trying for 2 CB's, we could do with them as well as I don't really want to get to a point where we need to call upon Seaborne :?

Yes please. I have a feeling he'll be superb. I mean he's kept out by Pique and Puyol and kept on at the club he must be pretty good.

And Mascherano. Quite a telling strategy, putting DM's at CB. Could Jack Cork be an option for providing cover at centre back?

Does sound amazing, although I still feel deep down we need a dog of war centre back to bring some steel and experience to the team. Maybe I'm just old school.

A great signing - for 10 years time.

CBs get better with age (as long as their pace holds up) and experience.

He is not what we need now.

And this "would be a fantastic signing" comment we've heard loads of time this season - its probably as likely as some of those other tall stories too.

Afellay, the AM/winger, also available. Tracked by the scousers and a host of European clubs. Hopefully further weakens Bologna's hand over Ramirez.

He's a centre-back, and he's very good. What else were you looking for?

He is what we need now, he is very good, when he has been picked by Barca he has never looked out of place.

You really don't know anything about him do you? But still choose to shun him, typical you.

I saw him training once, not sure he is what we need as Messi went past him like he was not there.

That applies to 90% of players out there

Messi is better than him on Fifa 12, HTH.

Great place for stag Dos. Just avoid the African hookers on Las Ramblas, although it might be his thing.

That's what the bloke who does the shirt printing in the shop told me too.

Yep, some goggle-eyed, Eastern European psychopath.

Used to play as Barca B on FIFA a lot, he was the boy. Would be a fantastic signing
Is that tongue in cheek, or do we seriously decide who would and who would not be a decent buy based on a computer game?

So 2 Centre Backs that kick with the same foot can't play together?

Well it isn't ideal with Adkins style of play. He wants a right footed CB and a left footed CB to aid the balance of the side and help us pass it out better from the back. For other teams, this isn't an issue, but here it doesn't fit in with Adkins style. It would be one of Hooiveld or Fontas.
