Graffito Posted 27 August, 2012 Share Posted 27 August, 2012 He could play behind Rodriguez. I watched him and the others' shooting practice before ko on Saturday. He strikes the ball brilliantly and unerringly into the net in contrast to Rodriguez and Sharp who were hit and miss. Only a fool would swap that for the likes of David Goodwillie. Suhari Posted 27 August, 2012 Share Posted 27 August, 2012 This season Rickie would get around 12-15 goals in the Prem - assuming he plays most games. Think he'd struggle at times because of his lack of mobility. Not sure he would be the central striker we need for a 4-3-3; might be our weak link. Next season he might get 10-12. His value would be far less than now. JRod would get 12-15 goals, if played consitently in the central role, and assuming he plays most games. He'd offer more to the 4-3-3; he'd also enhance his value and develop his skills. Next season he could be a 20 goal prem striker. Love SRL, he's a legend, but there is a case to be made for moving him on. Does sentiment have a place when striving for success?

Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 27 August, 2012 Share Posted 27 August, 2012 I'd only be moving I'm on if we had an experienced premiership striker lined up to replace him, which I very much doubt we have. Stepgar Posted 27 August, 2012 Share Posted 27 August, 2012 I for one would be very sad to see RL go if that's the case. However I will be here long after RL (i hope). Unfortunately there is no sentiment in football. Just look at Man Utd. Beckam, Van Nistelroy, Veron, Stam Ronaldo. Sometimes you have to make a business decision. Would be a little unfair on RL though I think he deserves a proper chance to see what he can do in the Prem.

Ewell Posted 27 August, 2012 Share Posted 27 August, 2012 Anyone suggesting we should sell Rickie Lambert is completely mental. Anytime he has been missing from the team in the past 3 years we have looked half if not quarter the side, on his day I think he is almost unplayable. The world and his wife seem to focus on pace, with a player of Rickie's calibre he uses his football brain, good movement, great first touch and link play to bring other players into the game. These other players are where the pace is needed, particularly the wide men, a midfielder willing to run into the box past a striker particularly in our current formation. The blindness of you have to have pace to be a success in the premier league really annoys me. A lot of you are going to have egg on your faces after he proves himself in the Premier League and scores between 10-15 goals this season.

Cabrone Posted 27 August, 2012 Share Posted 27 August, 2012 Fortunately it's only Blackburn making a bid, if it were a prem team I'd be more concerned. We must keep Ricky, he's our best striker, a real talisman and given the service can do a fine job in the prem. Besides which I think he - more than just about anyone else - really deserves a crack at this league. This story is going nowhere but if a bigger prem team comes sniffing then I would be more concerned.

goneawol Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 (edited) Linked with Villa http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfer-news-rickie-1283963 Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is weighing up a deadline-beating move for namesake Southampton striker Rickie Lambert. Villa have had a £5.5million bid for Genk striker Christian Benteke turned down by the Belgian club, so are now looking at last-minute alternatives before the summer window closes on Friday night. Lambert, 30, has built up a prolific reputation in League One and the Championship with Southampton and that has attracted interest, with Championship side Blackburn and now Villa seeing if they can test boss Nigel Adkins' resolve to keep him. The Villa boss had great success at Norwich with Grant Holt, who has also spent most of his career in the lower divisions, and he is also shopping on a budget in his new job. That is why Lambert appeals to a club who desperately need to strengthen their striking options as they face up to what could be a long hard season. Suhari Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 (edited) Rickie will not leave. Don't panic. We have established this summer that Saints put the feelers out to potential signings prior to making a move for them. Would imagine all clubs do this. With 2 links to Rickie now emerging, maybe him moving on is not beyond possibility. Could see the temptation of a tasty signing on fee for him somewhere, and chunky wages for a team desparate to buy guaranteed goals: at 30 years old maybe a last big fee opportunity? I hope not - but too many links now for comfort. Edited 28 August, 2012 by Suhari Can't cooking spell

There's also no chance we would accept a bid for our main striker this close to the deadline, so don't worry about it. Clubs want players, agents leak it, but most of the time the leaks don't come to anything. He'd cost more than £4m too.

CanadaSaint Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 I guess I wouldn't be as surprised as some if this deal went through, because we have bought (or are trying to buy) a number of players who may not easily dovetail with Rickie. But, besides all the issues around selling our top goal scorer (not to mention how that would play out with the fans), there's the question of whether it would be smart to sell a talent like Rickie to a potential relegation rival. batterseasaint Posted 28 August, 2012 Share Posted 28 August, 2012 I will be genuinely gutted if Rickie goes, and I hope to God it doesn't happen... But: 1. I was a little surprised not to see him on the bench tonight; if I'm not mistaken Rickie has always been on the bench for these sorts of cup ties in the past. A good get out clause if we are struggling. Tonight he wasn't. 2. Sibley hinted on Twitter that there's been a 'bit of everything' today... Perhaps an outgoing as well as an incoming? 3. We signed a striker today, which of course could just be to provide the injection of pace that we need, or it could mean there will be an outgoing striker. Am not saying I believe it will happen, but there is some very circumstantial evidence here that it might just happen.
