Ok I only have radio Solent to go by...... but 1st home game back in the PL I expected it to be jumping at SMS. However apart from the first five miniutes and a short period after Wigans 1st goal it sounded really flat on the radio. So for those that were there what was the atmosphere like today good, bad ...Meh?

Sh*t. Not helped by awful stewards in the Itchen North making the majority sit. Could barely hear the Northam from Itchen either. Wigan made a fair bit of noise to be fair.

Totally agree

Itchen North was s**t. The old block 4 has been disbanded as many have moved to blocks 1-3 and blocks 1-3 contain lots of people who prefer to sit or just want to save money.

Not like the old days when you knew what you were getting in those blocks and tended to attract like-minded people.

Very disappointed by it today. Having a ST in there I hope I'm not stuck with it like that for 18 more games. Loads of empty seats at the back of block 3. Ridiculous seeing as block 3 wasn't available to buy and the online ticketing showed it as completely sold out. I hope people in there today were there just because it was the first game back and that it'll be decent for United.

Half the ground left when they got their second. Not a very apt reward for a team that has just had back to back promotions and were clearly always going to struggle to come to terms with such a meteoritic rise. I am sure the atmosphere will improve.

Their support didn't help - wtf was that high-pitched rendition of I'm a Believer? Shouldnt be necessay but am sure united will wake a few more of our lot up.

The euphoria and novelty factor of being back in the Premier League wore off very quickly.

As for the Wigan fans. Pathetic. 'Small town near Portsmouth' is an interesting comment to make. I'd definitely say Wigan was a big **** hole near Liverpool.

Haha, that reminded me, that gets the prize for the most embarrassing song I've ever heard at football.

Palace fans proudly singing 'Glad All Over' and superbly timing it so that the last word coincided with a Guly header, that was great.

It's actually closer to Manchester!

I was in block 2 and we tried very hard. The most frustrating thing was some idiot behind me calling pretty much everybody f."?ing inbred hunts every 5 seconds. When i looked round to see who it was....I thought "you can talk.". The stewards were asking everyone to sit down but that had no bearing on the atmosphere in my opinion. So please dont use that as an excuse. The Northam usual were very very quiet. Wigan only started to make a noise when they scored.

This. It was sh*t. From the crowd to the performance a massive let down.

Reflective of the game for large periods. We aren't the kind of fans who will just make a racket non-stop. It got louder when something actually happened, but a lot of the game was stuck in midfield.

Not using it as an excuse but it certainly didn't help. You can make much more noise standing up than sitting down. I was luckily a row high enough and I managed to stand for 90% of the game on the aisle seat of 2 next to 3. Looked like there was a few sat down higher up in block 2 and further over towards 1 though. Why would anyone go in that part of the ground if they want to sit down?

Thought it was ok in parts but on the whole not great. Seemed to be an awful lot of people who hadnt been for a while, The guy next to me couldnt have said one positive thing all game. It was like he was just expecting us to roll Wigan over today and not concede. Lets be honest, we have given a fair number of chances away in NPC and L1 but teams are much more clinical in this division. chance - goal.

for a team that gets ridiculed for their lack of fans, Wigan were decent.

we were flat.

the whole game I had some racist moron stood behind me calling everyone c***s and getting aggressive when a woman with 2 young children asked him to watch his language!

It was really odd. Started so well but after a really flat start, the crowd also became flat.

When they scored we again made loads of noise for about 5 minutes but that was it. Worst I've heard it in years.

We're there too. Moved from the Chapel for this season.

When one of group tried buying a new season ticket next to us, he wasn't able (without kicking up a stink) to buy one in block 3. He was told the block was closed for new purchases as it was reserved for staff and players friend/family.

I reckon that contributed to the excellent amount of legroom and the peaceful afternoon's sleep yesterday.

I bet it's packed next week :-/

Very poor. Lots of new faces around us in the Northam and not much effort being made. Lots of 'premier league fans'. I think expectation has got too high, people turning up yesterday expecting an easy win. I'm sure it'll improve for the bigger games but it's p*ss poor if we carry on like that.

Wigan only got going after they scored.

Bit flat. Guly haters to the fore towards the end - mistakes by JWP and Fonte, not much reaction; similar by Guly, foaming atth mouth and expletives. Disappointed by the swarm of people leaving after the second goal. We have a part to play this year - got to keep behind the boys, there will be a few days like this I suspect. Credit those who were there at the bitter end though.

If anyone stops you outside the ground and asks which way the "Northern" stand is, tell them to f*ck off. Loads of people with Megastore bags as well in the stands.

Getting new or returning fans in is an inevitability, and I don't mind that. That is if they actually bother to make some f*cking noise during the game.

Someone sitting near me called Adkins 'Atkins'.

was in block 38 & was surprised how quiet the Northam was. also wasn't happy having to hear that awful song for Danny Fox again! fecking sh1te song that a bunch of f*ck-nuckles kept trying every 5 mins

the atmosphere reflected the game imo which is a sad reflection as we should be trying to spur the players on.

It was like a morgue.. almost as if the fans were either as nervous as the players or scratching their heads at this totally different way of playing we have started this season with.. NA needs to be areful not to over-think everything just becoz we are in the Premier.

The Northam is dead now its all about the kingsland north now saying that it was even quiet up there yesterday

Oh marvelous, renewed in the Northam for this year. Sadly couldn't make it yesterday so I was interested to see what you lot would say in this thread.

Used to question the wisdom that suggested we had a better atmosphere with smaller crowds but over time you start to see that it's often true.

Going by the brief highlights on motd - looked awful - large spaces - pretty quiet. Nothing for anyone else to fear.

To be fair, the ground was rammed...

...With the exception of the whole of block 44 (Wigan's fault for not selling their allocation and ours for not selling it when they let us have it back); a chunk of Block 43, massive chunks at the front and back of Blocks 2, 3, 5 and 7, the entire back 20 rows of the Itchen/Chapel corner, the area directly behind the goal in the Chapel, and 3 rows at the front of the corner of Kingsland at the Northam end.

Somehow with the strategic non-selling of tickets in the Northam and the front rows of the Itchen we managed to contrive to make the ground look completely empty on tv for large chunks of time, even though there were only 3-4,000 empty seats. Doesn't convey the greatest impression of the club to the world at large, does it ?

I couldn't hear a single song from the Wigan fans all match long, just for the record. Northam was much busier than usual but no louder.

Posted

Singing about Portsmouth every other song doesn't really encourage the rest to join in. What's the point? Man U will rip the s**te out of us next week if we do that all game. It would be a bit like them singing about Rochdale or Oldham. Surely some bright spark can come up with a few decent songs about our team and players instead.

The whole day was disappointing. I expected Saints to sell out and the crowd to be 30000 +. The Northam/Kingsland corner was ok to start with but got quieter as the game meandered towards the inevitable defeat. Could barely hear the Wigan fans from where we were sitting. Maybe holidays and Hampshire cricket were to blame for the empty seats but if Saints fans can't get more enthused for our next 18 home games, then the players will find it much harder without the "twelth man".

Agree with you there. They're **** all to us now, mabye the occasional song, but why do we feel the need to go on an on.

Our support has always confused me.

I thought that when we played city. The main song I could hear was WTFILN, not OWTS. We were back in the prem, playing the champions, yet we couldn't get over a team two divisions below us. Move on, our rivals are the teams we play.
