Wigan attendance

Chapel is not the family stand anymore, but is quite dull, if you want to get excitable get tickets in the Northam, they have opened block 43 so go in there £30 as well, decent atmosphere, plenty of availability in that stand at the moment.

if you have southampton based contact who can pop down the ground to buy the tickets with cash / debit card you can avoid the booking fees as well.

The Northam? No thanks. From what I've seen on here down the years ....

Well, I'll leave it at that

The main reason we haven't sold out yet are it's August so loads of people are on holiday . We didn't sell out our first game at SMS and rarely do sell out the first home match of the season for that reason. In addition we're playing Man U next week so any fans who needed to be selective about which matches they can attend are more likely to try for Man U tickets first. That might mean that Wigan tix are a fall back plan for those that are unsuccessful and consequently will sell nearer matchday.

Complete and utter nonsense.

So you're saying that there are currently so many people on holiday, we can't muster up 6,000 non season ticket holders to attend this game? Why are only Southampton fans on holiday at the moment? Plenty of other clubs have been able to sell out.

Maybe, just maybe, some (only some*) of the regular match day ticket buyers last season have become season ticket holders this. If that is so, comparing the non season ticket sales only would be odd.

That's irrelevant. The fact is, we can't attract 6,000 non season ticket fans for our first home game back in the Premiership. We know we have at least 32,000 fans as we've filled the stadium before. Though as pointed out to me, virtually the entire South of England is on holiday that week.

How come Everton nearly sold out last night for a Monday night game on telly and Fulham, QPR, Newcastle and Man City sold out this weekend? Is Southampton the only club in the country that is greatly affected by family holidays?

Okay so that accounts for 7,000 of the fans that were on the pitch singing "we are Southampton we are premier league" where are the rest and where are all these floating fans from Guildford, Cirencester, Warwick, Stroud, Ilfracombe and Truro we were expecting once we got promoted?

you did say you might get "excitable"

best bet is to head for the Chapel / Itchen corner then, same price and plenty of availability. block 12/13

No self respecting football fan books a holiday to coincide with the football season. There's been plenty of time inbetween the end of last season and the start of this one to go away.

in fact i think i read this summer was a record mate! 4 months between last game at st marys to first home game!

We would not have sold out against the likes of Wigan last time we were in the Premier league so why should we now when prices are ridiculously high and there is a recession with many people who would like to go to football unable to afford to do so?

We did actually. We used to sell out every game in the Strachan era.

"we can't". What new rule is this?

I thought this game was being linked with the Man United game? Seems like it isn't from the comments....

It wasn't linked, it was being sold alongside it for people to have priority to the Man U game until a particular date, which presumably has passed, seeing as BOTH games are on general sale.

The fact Man U hasn't sold out yet is a MUCH bigger deal than Wigan, as it's after the September summer holiday cut off and the kids are all back in school, so that argument is moot - but of course Man U is on the tv and a Sunday.

That doesn't count as everyone was on holiday that week, plus there was roadworks, the weather wasn't great that day, it was a week before payday, Christmas was just round the corner and not to mention it's also peak time for weddings.

Wrong again. I remember that game. It was actually really hot so I expect a lot of people went to the beach or new forest instead

That might be cancelled out by those of us that had ST last season and don't now....I have now become a occasional matchday ticket buyer (though not this month between a holiday and my nippers birthday the pot is empty so it's radio solent for me)

But that was before all this new found optimism. Back then, there wasn't a need for a 50,000 seater stadium. Now there is, just ignore the fact we haven't sold out season tickets and we haven't sold out the opening 2x games of the season.

So that's a yes then?

It's only Tuesday. We will sell out on Saturday (other than corporate) Apparently we regularly sold 1500 on matchday last season.

No surely not? CM is certain we can't sell more than 6,000 non season tickets, so the fact that there are 4 days left is irrelevant, apparently

Yes. Surely that was fairly evident without the need for your usual smug response?

Anyway, what does our attendance on the opening game of the season 10 years ago have to do with the Wigan game?

I don't know, not much IMO, but you felt the need to assure us that we sold out every game under Strachan. Still 4 days to go on ticket sales, unless I have missed the new rule you seem certain of

To be honest i think we'll probably come very close to selling out wigan and will definitely sell out united, the fact it's slow now is all it is. But i do think it shows talk of expanding the stadium is probably just a pipe dream.

There's nothing wrong with that of course, i'm perfectly happy with having 32,000 people watching saints play and anything else strikes me as delusions of grandeur.

Now call that small time dell attitude or whatever you like but i really don't see why we can't just except our place in the football world and enjoy it for what it is. Or maybe that's all just a little to realistic?

I can understand some of the calls for a bigger stadium. For instance, the Man U game will likely sell out soon so there is the prospect that we could sell a few more tickets if the capacity were available.

That said, its still debatable just how many extra tickets we could sell for that game. The Wigan game for instance is not yet sold out even in areas of the stadium other than the extra tickets that were returned by Wigan. The United game will be one of the most popular games of the season and yet has reached general sale and tickets are still freely on sale, hardly difficult to get hold of.

The same old debates once again of course.

We are often reminded that in 2004 or something a big game sold out in one day. Based on the information we have available to us its arguable that because the United game has gone to general sale and there are tickets left, there is actually less demand for tickets than then and our fan base has decreased since our last premier league stint. This despite the ambition and rescources we've never had before, huge catchment area and millions of floating fans from all over the country we were assured would pack to St Mary's every week to see Premier league football.

Yeah agreed. All of the bullsh*t about back in 2004 tickets being sold out weeks in advance and tickets for the top games being unobtainable (and that this time round we're even more appealing than then) is being shown up a bit so far. If I wanted a game for perhaps the most attractive home game of the season (Man Utd) I could very easily get one right now.

Pretty much everyone accepted we could sell a few more tickets for the big games than the capacity. Talk of a 50K stadium is laughable. We'd probably struggle to get 35K against United at this rate.

Personally I'm glad Cortese hasn't followed the advice of some on here otherwise rather than having 3,000 seats available for Wigan and 500 for Man United, we'd have 21,000 and 18,000. Now wouldn't that be embarrassing.

Yeah, but to be fair you're forgetting about the effect of the flexible pricing policy........

If we have 22.5 k season ticket holders and say another 22.5k fans who want to go to games but can't get to them all for financial or other reasons that means we have a potential home crowd for big home games of 45k plus away support. The fact that a quarter of them are coming to the less attractive Wigan game is quite impressive and bodes well for attendances for the rest of the season.

Why not say, say, fifty thousand more? Or, say, seventy thousand? Or, say, ten thousand. Or, say, every single human being south of the M4?
