Hope we are in the Market for a new keeper not sure if Kelvin is up for the prem his first two performance have not been good.

IMHO he isn't

The Prem IS different class, and the differences are obvious. OK Davis WAS good in Div 1 and the CCC, BUT, I had a view right behind Wigans first goal, and I am convinced that Al Habsi, de Gea, Vorm, and Czech would certainly have reacted much much better.

It was obvious a shot was coming, and all Davis did was stay rooted flat footed on the spot.

Harsh ?? Yes of course, but in the Prem, no time for sentiment

Davis failed in the Prem last time, and he will fail again this season. His reactions have slowed. Time to bring in a younger keeper with quicker reactions IMHO

Having watched the second half of Swansea's game, it seems to me that we need a keeper with a bigger presence and whose distribution is better. Swansea's keeper was excellent distributing the ball. Kelvin just seems to punt it up the left wing. I know he didn't stand much of a chance for the 2nd goal, but he didn't put any pressure on the striker or make a large enough target of himself. I don't think we need too many players, but 3 or 4 quality ones are essential.....especially a pacy winger. Jay Rod is going to become disillusioned very quickly if he keeps being put out to grass on the left wing. I feel sorry for the lad.

What's happened to Davis? Only a few months ago a fair few people on here were adamant that he should have been in the England squad and was better than Rob Green. Now people are question if he's even good enough for the premier league.

and that this was the best saints team ever...or at least better than the one WGS had in 2003...(which was a massive insult to WGS)

Kelvin Davis is probably better than Rob Green - but the team is nowhere near as good as the 2003 Saints team.

We crawled across the finish line last season to finish second - and that was obvious yesterday. A lot of the players who started the game should be on the substitutes bench at this level.

Norwich who also had successive promotions from League 1 and the Championship like us brought ib 8 players this time last year - and now look like they are going to struggle like us. Swansea brought in 9 players last summer. So far we've brought in 3 and a reserve goalkeeper.

We desperately need to add som pace to the team if nothing else.

For some reason are transfer strategy seems to have gone horribly wrong this summer.

For goodness sake neither of those goals yesterday were down to Kelvin. The first was smashed in from about 6 yards after the defence was split, no keeper in the world would have saved that. The second he was left totally exposed and Kone is a quality player who was never going to miss a 1-on-1 when given that much time and space to pick his spot. Also, for those banging on about Al-Habsi, with the exception of the shot from Lallana that he tipped onto the bar (which was a great save), the rest were total bread and butter from distance. If any of those had gone in it would have been put down as a serious error. Plus, he was very lucky to get away with the one that he nearly bundled into his own net at the near post, and nothing stuck to him all game.

Kelvin's not perfect but to blame either of yesterday's goals on him is unfair. It's the defence in front of him who were culpable for both and that's where our priorities should lie.

Norwich have added 7 more this summer and Swansea 5

Kelvin has let in loads of "bread and butter from distance " goals over the past few seasons

I reckon we'll tie up some deals this week.

Would look a totally different proposition if we got Olsson (pace @ left/b), Kana Biyik (alongside Jos), our man Ramirez, and Phillips! Would love a keeper but don't think we'll get one and not sure whether we're still in market for a left back.

If we did though...

.....................New keeper

Clyne....Kana-Biyik...Jos....Olsson

Morgan. Davis

Ramirez. Lallana. Phillips

Lambert

No worries at all.

Kelvin is not good enough. Always said it, always will.

well if you were saying that over the last three, four, five seasons then you would have been making yourself look foolish IMO considering he has been absolutely outstanding for us in that period. If you are just talking about the Prem, that's a different matter.

I'm not saying he's perfect, he's not. Just that neither of the goals yesterday were his fault so it's a bit harsh to point the finger at him for those. To your point about over the last few seasons, all players, including keepers, make mistakes from time to time, and just looking at the first two games of the Prem, Given, Federici, Cech and De Gea have all made howlers already, and you could very nearly have added Al-Habsi to that yesterday. Nobody's perfect.

So while I realise that we can chase more than one position at a time, and I agree that we should always be looking to strengthen wherever we can, if we are in a position where we have to prioritise time, budget or resources for transfer activity in the last week of the window, personally I think we have bigger priorities than a keeper right now.

Antti Niemi was the signing that triggered our brief spell of success a decade ago. In Paul Jones, we had a keeper that had served us well and was a good shot stopper, but he didn't command his area that well. Paul Jones was a keeper that was more than adequate for the level that we were playing at, but Antti came in and allowed the defence to turn into one of the best in the country. In many ways, he was a signing that many of us didn't know we even needed at the time because Jones was a good keeper, but we looked a different class as soon as he was in the team.

Maybe there are some parallels to be drawn with now. Kelvin is an excellent keeper but maybe we need a keeper that can take us to the next level.

And I say this with a heavy heart, because I am very fond of Kelvin.

Consider this:

The speculation about our transfer targets were just a fob. The management always intended to do their best this year with the current squad with just a few additions.

The plan is to save as much as the Premiership money as possible and take a chance on staying up. Have you considered that relegation with a healthy bank balance is acceptable this year so that we can build again in the NPC

Did you mean us fans or NA? If you meant NA, how on earth would you know, Alan? Me thinks you like to blow smoke up folks arse with your 'inside' knowledge.

Probably the same reason he has known the majority of transfer targets we have been in for this year. Clearly has a source in the club.

Perhaps it's the chap in the shop? Joking apart, there are several posters on here that have a contact at the club but they don't attention seek by posting 'look at me! I know something you don't' bla bla

I think you might be right - but the club still need to strengthen the current squad if we are going to bounce back in one season after accepting relegation this season

So if you were in Cortese's shoes right now who would you sign - assuming we have money to spend and plan A isn't to accept relegation this season and bounce straight back next season?

I'd pay up and sign Ramirez right now - otherwise it's been a lot of wasted effort which has probably stopped us from signing other players. We desperately need his creativity as well.

I'd go after Douglas straight away for centre back - he's 24 Dutch/Brazilian - so a perfect age and would partner well with Fonte and Jos as he speaks both players lingo! He can also play a bit by all accounts.

I'd add Maya Yoshida at centre back as well - be good company for Tandanari and also at 23 a great age. He can also play a bit as well.

As an alternative Matt Kilgallon on loan would do.

Lucas Biglia permanently or on loan to add some quality to the central midfield and give us another holding midfielder.

We might as well forget Phillips and/or Ince - Holloway and Blackpool will never sell to us - and at this rate they will be in the premier league this time next year and we won't! Instead we should go after Zaha at Palace to add some pace down the wing and some real potential!

For left back I'd look Erik Pieters - he can play at full back or centre back - and once he's fully recovered from his Injury would add some really quality at the back.

According to Nixon, we have/are close to making a move for David Goodwillie. Should be easy, as Blackburn want rid.

Seems every inch a panic buy, that one. (if it happens, of course).

I hope to god that this isn't true. We don't need any more centre-forwards, especially crap fat ones.

It's a weird one, Nixon says this link has come from the player himself. He says we've contacted his agent with regards to his availability.

Could just be tosh to build up interest, who knows.

The guy can play on either flank or in behind as well, so would be the type of player we're after - albeit no where near the required quality.

Not an improvement on what we've already got. If the story is coming from the player, then to me it looks like he's just trying to drum up some interest in himself.

what about adding ramirez to that?

That would soften the blow

To be honest, I don't mind Dann. I think he's a player who has been put into a rubbish Blackburn team which is poorly coached.

I think he'd add to what we have. Wouldn't moan about Dann at all.

If we end up with Dann and Goodwillie, Christ on a bike - this place will go into melt down...!

thought it already had!

season over - we'll end up with zero points - NA + NC are complete tools - all the players are crap - no vision / ambition - doomed for ever :-) Did I forget anything?

We have waited for this for 7 years, and at times it seemed we would never get there, and yet some people can't wait for us to leave the PL soon enough! I for one am going to enjoy this season to the full, whatever the outcome - we have waited long enough, let's just enjoy the moment.
