Not the same system as today then.

I reckon we will field a more attacking line up at home against Wigan

They also play a very different 343 and alway play with lots of width

I can see us going back to 2 strikers up top to put pressure on their back 3 and to maybe get 2 on 1s on their defence

I would go with

Davis

Clyne

Fonte

Jos

Fox

Morgan

Davis

Lallana

Guly

Lambert

J-rod

Gazza

Richardson

New CB

Ramirez

Sharp

Lee

JWP

Of course, assuming we get said players

I understand that Nige seems to want to play Lallana central now, but for me personally I believe he is most effective in a more attacking role! I think we may see Adam in a number of positions this year depending on the opponent and whether it is a home or away fixture.

Against other teams he can push forward more. Setup the second today from in our half.

I'd play 4-3-2-1 with Rodriguez leading the line, Lambert and Lallana behind him with Rickie drifting to the left and Adam to the right.

Morgan, Davis and Ward-Prowse in the midfield 3

And the defence as it was today.

If RL was not deemed mobile enough to play as the lone striker, I seriously doubt NA would play him in behind the main striker. I'd much rather see RL up top with JRod coming on to replace him if required, Rodriguez on the left doesn't seem to work very well IMO.

So proud of the lads today. They'll be disappointed they didn't get anything from it so what a response to get against Wigan. Lambert is a must start for me at home. Maybe even two forwards up front and a hopeful debut from Ramirez. First league meeting, bring em on!!!

Davis

Clyne Fonte Jos Fox

Davis MS

Lallana

Guly Lambo

J-Rod

Slightly more forward role for Lallana to exploit the space in front of the Wigan back 3. Our ability to pin back their Wing backs and adapting to their front 3 will be decisive. Fonte will hopefully be able to walk out with the ball more to exploit the extra man.

To stay in the Prem its essential that you win your home games. The side were so well organised at Man City that there's every reason to exepect the same 'all out' approach at home. As long as Adkins gets his selection right this time a good win should be on the cards.

I can't see us playing the same game that we played against City - we were rightly very cautious and Adkins tactics almost paid off completely. This is a home game that is very winnable, but we need to keep pressure on them and not sit back quite so much IMO. I would start with Lambert and Davis. If somehow the Ramirez deal comes off, then he will be a definate starter eventually but not next week - too soon. Still don't think JayRod is working on the left in terms of pushing forward, plus he isn't providing Fox with the cover he needs. Very excited about the game - hopefully our first Prem points.

wouldnt play 2 strikers unless they play in there rightful positions, unless we sign Ramirez id only swap lambo for Rod but play lambo upfront not on the left, Lee will need a few weeks but as soon as he's fit get him in the starting 11 also

Agree with the sentiment but some tough decisions on who to leave out, unless we start with 13 or have a very attacking bench!

Go 4-4-2 and start Lambert and Sharp together

Go Witt that. I think we will start with 2 forwards up top for this one

Need to be wary of Wigan. They play the unusual 343 and play very wide and have plenty of pace

They are dodgy at the back. Poor up front but have a few very good players and flood the middle of the park

Can see a familiar 442 variation saturday

very much looking forward to this game, any news on the ticket sales? i know Wigan won't bring many (prob 500) so should be plenty of tickets available opening up further blocks of the Northam, would be good to get a big crowd in for it.

I expect to see our 4-2-2-2 formation from last year next week

yesterday worked well. but we won't be sitting back like that against wigan, and trying to get one on the counter, but i'm not even gonna try and guess the front 6

if the ramirez deal goes through picking a formation/team on FIFA is going to be a headache

Well Lambert has to start. We were toothless in attack until Ricky came on, so he has to lead the line. Steve Davis is another starter for me - did enough in the 25 minutes he was on, to earn a start. Unless we sign a centre back and goalkeeper - yes a goalkeeper, how many times did KD push the ball back into the middle of the box yesterday he will cost us big time this season I'm afraid - then the defence stays the same. So:

Davis

Fox, Fonte, Jos, Clyne

Guly, Morgan, Davis, AL

Lambert, JRod

If Ramirez is signed then in for Guly.

Basically a 5-5 formation, defend as a team, attack as a team!!

As the thread title is "Wigan line up", I would suggest that you have all 18 names wrong.

More seriously, I can't see us NOT starting with Lambert, in a home game we're going to be more 4-3-3 than 4-5-1 and can afford to leave a less mobile target man up the pitch much more than against the Champions away.

Wigan's 3-4-3 got taken to pieces by Chelsea on the counter early on yesterday, if they play the same formation away (I doubt it) and Ramis goes walkabout like he did yesterday with Lambert dropping into midfield, Rodriguez or Guly will be in behind every time. There's even a case that De Ridder might be an option based on that.

I'd go with the same back 5, Schneiderlin and Davis in the middle, Lallana in the hole in front of them and Guly/Lambert/Rodriguez up top with Sharp to come on for Lambert after about 65 mins.

Drops Puncheon for Davis and Ward-Prowse for Lambert (Puncheon was a little loose with his tracking back, esp. of Clichy). Or, and this is a testament to Ward-Prowse, start with him and bring Davis on. Either way is good.

Wouldn't be surprised if he holds an Eu passport of some type.

We already did this discussion, I was told by someone on here that he definitely doesn't (although at least 3 of his 4 Uruguayan teammates at Bologna do).

Well Lambert has to start. We were toothless in attack until Ricky came on, so he has to lead the line.

I've come to the same line-up as you, but for completely different reasons.

We weren't "toothless", we were defending from the front with Rodriguez, Lallana and Guly chasing down and all but Guly sitting deep. Adkins brought Lambert on when he could do more damage.

Had Lambert been on from the start he could have been too knackered to be where he was for his goal and place it as he did. Having said that, next week we'll be doing a lot more attacking, Wigan are likely to be one of the weaker defensive sides we play, and having him up there supported by Guly/Rodriguez (or even Sharp) will be more beneficial, we can switch him out later if needed but his effort is much more likely to be in attacking play.

43 and 44 are already open for Saints fans as of last week.

I think it should be 4-4-2 as well. I'd play:

------------Davis

Clyne---Fonte---Jos---Fox

Ramirez-Morgan-Davis-Lallana

---Lambert------Sharp

Guly for Ramirez if that goes tits up.

Although I think it's likely to be:

------------Davis

Clyne---Fonte---Jos---Fox

---------Schneiderlin------

-----Davis--------Lallana----

Ramirez/Guly-------Rodrigues

---------Lambert----------

They're not bad going forward but poor defensively, just attack. 4-2 victory.

We were toothless, did we have a single shot on target in the 1st half?? We really did not threaten in the final 3rd. Tactically yuo can not expect to defend for 60 minutes against a team like City. Lets face it, had they taken their chances we would have been dead and bury by half time. We had no target to hit in the 1st half, no one to hold up the ball. Guly and Jrod played well, just wrong team selection IMO. Lambert is fit, he's a professional footballer and he can't run for 90 minutes then something is seriously wrong with our coaching and training!!

We had people in the box every time we went forward, we just never got the ball into the box from the wing. You can't blame the person in the middle for a failure to cross the ball unless they're not moving and are easy to mark. We also never tried to "hit a target" or hold up the ball, we always broke with the ball in numbers and tried to catch them on the counter.

If Lambert can't run for 90 minutes I would suggest you look at his age and ability and previous capabilities. Why do you think we've signed someone with a similar build and more agility who is 9 years younger than him ?

Surely you cannot completely ignore the point made though? We didnt create anything until Lambert got on. Nothing. It`s not like Adkins told the team "Rickie is on , lets attack". Rickie completely changed the game in our favour, through his skills. We were the better team after he was put in. his touch, presence, strength, link-up play and finishing was superb - better than any other striker on the pitch.

To say we/he would have done worse if he had started is just speculation. Personally i rue the fact that he didnt get the nod from the off. If he created that much havoc in half an hour, how much could he create in 90 minutes - even against City ? The undisputable fact is we were dire when attacking in the first half, and lucky not to see the game put to bed before SRL got his chance.

Don't have a season ticket this year because I'm at Uni most of the time, but managed to get a ticket for this game regardless... in the chapel as that was all I could afford, so it should be an interesting experience for me as I've never sat there before.

On the game, I really feel like we can give Wigan a good chance of it. If we can push Man City, we can beat wigan... although I am too aware that it rarely works like that. Either way, this is a must win game if we want to be staying up. Wigan are our direct challengers if you like for 17th place so we have to be winning these games.
