Doesn't surprise me. Cortese wants the best in all fields. Adkins needs to prove himself. If he grows with the club and makes the step up, he'll stay for many more years. If we don't make any progress over the next 1 or 2 seasons, he'll be gone, unfortunately. Thats just the way football goes, and especially Southampton Football Club at the moment.

Both the journos on there saying that Adkins is under huge pressure from cortese and that the vibes were there from end of last season. Both saying they feel very sorry for Adkins!

He will be under even more pressure if/when we sign Gaston. I cannot see Cortese pulling of a transfer like that and accepting a season of struggle.

I just hope NA proves himself to be one of the best English managers, and becomes the big name that Cortese so clearly craves.

The other thing about pulling off a signing like Gaston is that it puts the club in a better position to attract the next level manager. I'm sure that's a factor in this type of signing. As you rightly say though, if Adkins produces the goods he'll stay.

The tough decision for Cortese is that if we go down this season, who better to try and get us back up than the man that led us to the Premier League in the first place. Of course if we're heading for relegation, he won't be here long anyway. If he does get the sack, we'll all be gutted, but I'd be excited to see someone brought in that could attract bigger names, although Cortese seems to be doing OK by himself based on recent events.

I really hope Nigel can be a success here and keep his position for a long time to come.

Over-hyped bull**** from so-called journos who don't know their ass from their elbow, but who like to make things up to make it sound like they know what's going on at St Mary's. Not saying NA is not under pressure, but I'm sure NC and NA have discussed the targets for the season in a rational manner. Its best not to listen to these ****s on Sky.

Yeh right, that's why he was given a contract extension......more chance of SRL getting the chop!

Because we don't play be the media pack rules, we can expect a degree of supposition and, frankly, sh1t-stirring. Not saying NA isn't under pressure, but you could say the same for 20 of the other 21 managers. I include Mancini in that.

There was a 5 year plan to get to the PL, Adkins got us there in 3. Why would there have been "vibes" starting from the end of last season? He was also given a new long term contract 2 years ago. NC must be realistic enough to know that surviving and consolidating this season has to be the aim, and then we can push on from there. Hope NA gets the chance but I see no reason why he shouldn't get it.

Yep. No doubt in my mind this is a media conspiracy of some kind. It's obvious.

I dont think they are clueless, anyone can see that Adkins will be under pressure, him abd NC have said they are not aiming to just stay here but be competetive, add this to the cash they are spending off and on the pitch.

Of course he has to make an impact.

As for end of season looking for a new manager, I cant see that tbh

Agree with your first part. I just think k that Adkins may be sacked if we are lower mid table or below.

If NA does well, he'll be poached by a bigger club. If he doesn't, he'll be sacked. I'd be very surprised if he's still our manager next season.

I don't believe NA would be poached by a bigger club cos if he does well, we'll be a bigger club.

Which club's in England do you think a) would want him b) would have a vacancy c) he would want to leave for?

The number of teams is shrinking all the time, especially as it looks like he has a big budget at Saints and a very ambitious chairman investing in the academy, training ground and in the long term the stadium.

Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool are all more attractive, but would the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Everton, Sunderland, West Ham, Fulham etc etc offer more than he can get at Saints?

Successful enterprises often have an element of internal conflict. When Nige came in, Cortese held all the cards. Adkins has had a degree of success that insulates him from an instant sacking. While Cortese technically has the power to do it, it could come at the cost of disharmony in the squad, disillusionment in the fans and negative press. Hence Nige has his shot in the Prem. He'll get his chance, but he'll need to deliver quickly to hold onto his job.

I actually hate that show

It really gives me the urge to perform physical harm on people

This. Woolnough is a complete arse, at least when Jimmy Hill presented you felt there was someone who had played the game and been involved in football clubs who had some idea what he was talking about. Nowadays, a load of 3rd rate hacks who spout rubbish week after week and who all have their little agendas.

Why does ANYONE take any notice of what some no mark journalist`s have to say...most of the ****e the spout is

mad up of making 2 + 2 = 5..

They are desperate to sell the rags the represent and sensationalise to try to do just that.

The opinions they spout are no more credible than anyone's,just because they write crap for fleet street they think

their word is the truth.

Agree 100% with you there. I came back to SKY last year after about 7 years away and couldn't believe how dreary and top-6 obsessed this program had become. Jimmy Hill could chair a proper fooball conversation, but the program now is just a mutual log-rolling exercise. Dull in the extreme.

You won't hear about Saints again for weeks. Even when they discuss Man City next week, you'll struggle to tell who they played today.

The bookies have heard the same thing. Adkins currently favourite to be first manager shown the door.
