Saint_clark Posted 16 November, 2008 Share Posted 16 November, 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/7729516.stm Completely agree with it to be honest, with the exception of Upson whom I would have dropped for Michael Dawson. Glad Micah Richards, Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young have been picked. Also glad Bentley has been dropped as he has done f*ck all to deserve a place. saint_stevo Posted 16 November, 2008 Share Posted 16 November, 2008 Dawson could not have been in the squad, he isn't first choice for Spurs even! Agree about Upson though, apart from today the clean sheets record for West Ham was horrific.... Not sure about Mancienne either! About time Ashley Young was picked though, surprised bout Bentley, he has picked up since Saggy chops arrived
LGTL Posted 16 November, 2008 Share Posted 16 November, 2008 Am heading out Monday evening, can't wait. Pretty pleased with the squad overall, there won't be the usual Beckham histeria and no surpirse that Rooney is "injured". Looking forward to seeing Agbonlahor and Young get a chance, but am surprised there is no Owen.

Andy_Porter Posted 16 November, 2008 Share Posted 16 November, 2008 -----------Hart Johnson Terry Richards Bridge Theo Carrick Lampard Young ------Gerrard ---------Agonlahor That's how i'd play the squad, blood in a few youngsters alongside more established players like Lampard, Terry and Gerrard. SuperMikey Posted 16 November, 2008 Share Posted 16 November, 2008 Even though this is a friendly, I don't think there's enough experience in the squad to overcome Germany, particularly up front. I'd play: ------------James------------- Richards--Terry--Davies--Bridge --------Carrick--Gerrard-------- Walcott--------------------SWP --------Lampard---------------- ----------------Defoe---------- Subs: Hart, Lescott, Upson, Barry, Young, Bent, Agbonlahor (it's 7 subs for internationals, right?) Richards and Bridge to play as attacking full backs, overlapping Carrick and Gerrard.

stevegrant Posted 17 November, 2008 Share Posted 17 November, 2008 Defoe is, sadly, scoring as well. Defoe has also proven in his countless chances for England that he can quite happily score goals against the likes of Andorra and Kazakhstan, but can't do it against the better nations. Here's his England goalscoring record: Sep 04 v Poland (1) Sep 06 v Andorra (2) Jun 08 v Trinidad & Tobago (2) Oct 08 v Kazakhstan (1) Poland are the highest-ranked nation from those, currently at 32 in the FIFA rankings. Trinidad are 78th, Kazakhstan 125th and Andorra 194th. He has 31 England caps (somehow), but has scored in just 4 of those games. Time to move on from that experiment. Darren Bent is in good form at the moment, he should get a chance, as should Agbonlahor.

stevegrant Posted 17 November, 2008 Share Posted 17 November, 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/7727451.stm A few injuries: Michael Ballack (Chelsea) Philipp Lahm (Bryan Munich) Clemens Fritz (Werder Bremen) Marcell Jansen (Hamburg) Christian Pander (Schalke) Thorsten Frings is out after a dispute with their manager, and Kevin Kuranyi retired during half-time of their qualifier with Russia last month, but apart from that, it looks a pretty strong squad. Andy_Porter Posted 17 November, 2008 Share Posted 17 November, 2008 Harsh on Carrick IMO. I think he's a fantastic passer of the ball. Defoe is, sadly, scoring as well. 1 goal in 6 and that was a penalty. Agree about Carrick, he hasn't had anywhere near enough chances for England. Defoe, Upson and Carrick - proven not good enough ? Why bother ? United best central midfielder last season, Barry has been **** this season and Hargreaves is injured. I think he should be are first choice defensive midfielder. Even with Hargreaves fit I think Carrick is the better choice, Hargreaves didn't really have many good games in the centre for United, he's like a more expensive English O'Shea. Andy_Porter Posted 17 November, 2008 Share Posted 17 November, 2008 This game is in danger of turning into a massive joke. It will be at most Terry + James and a bunch of second string players, bit pointless really. Fair play for John Terry saying he wants to play even after picking up his injury, I guess after the last couple of games he really had to though. Andy_Porter Posted 19 November, 2008 Share Posted 19 November, 2008 Great result. Really glad we got the goal, I was actually quite impressed with pretty much everyone, I don't think Capello can do any wrong for us at the moment. Everything he does turns to gold. Downing, Carrick, Upson and SWP where all superb. Downing was my MOTM, he didn't put a foot wrong all day. He was up and down the left all night and put in some quality crosses. Carrick was a whole load better than Barry, far more assured in posession and better on the ball.

stevegrant Posted 20 November, 2008 Share Posted 20 November, 2008 A ridiculously dominant performance considering the number of non-first choice players in the side, although it should be noted that Germany were a bit below full strength as well. I don't get this whole "Carson howler" nonsense. It was entirely John Terry's fault (and he admitted as much in the post-match interview, credit where it's due). Fortunately he came up trumps despite potentially being offside and probably climbing all over the German defender for the winner. As good a performance as it was, it's still nowhere near 1/9/2001

saint_bert Posted 20 November, 2008 Share Posted 20 November, 2008 I will be the first to admit I had lost faith in the England team, however Capello is, I hope, turning the mental barrier we had around. Fantastic performance last night. Was great to see a team full of pace, confidence and intelligence. Carrick was awesome. I have found it suprising that he hasnt been included more in the squads, but Capello seems to know best and who am I to argue. Never have I been more pleased to admit that I was wrong. Well done lads.

Carson was a full metre (at least) away from the 18 yard line when the ball came into the box.
Thedelldays Posted 20 November, 2008 Share Posted 20 November, 2008 terry was being a captain and took the heat off of a young player..it was clearly both of their faults..but after terry just scored the winner he was able to take the hit on the mistake.. well done terry IMO

Robsk II Posted 20 November, 2008 Share Posted 20 November, 2008 This has been reported as his third serious shoulder injury, the first required surgery. Yep, he's already had the shoulder op on his other arm. If you do it again post-op, it can mean some pretty serious things. However, I disagree that it was both of their faults. Only Carson could see the whole situation, ball and striker, so he should have dealt with it. Terry was blind to the attacker, and if Carson hadn't come out, it would have been dispatched to touch.
Jez Posted 21 November, 2008 Share Posted 21 November, 2008 Terry looked over his shoulder about 5 times, he knew exactly where the player was, was literally walking just next to the ball, and in the end tried shielding the ball from the attacker by attempting to chest it into the ground. All he had to do was knock it out wide, but defenders often try to leave it as late as possible to get the best possible outcome, and this time it backfired. Carson should have been there quicker, but if a defender is in doubt, just smack it wide. Normally a keeper would take control of a situation like that, but as Carson is young and inexperienced, in comparison to England Captain Terry, Terry should have dealt with it. Good captaincy work on the PR front afterwards, but probably just being honest.
