WELL ....as you asked Minty...

....we were actually promoted in season 1977-78. There was no such thing as a transfer window and a club could sign.. whoever... whenever.

But during that season.. we said goodbye to Peter Osgood who tried pastures new in the USA, as well as former youth players Tony Sealy and Steve Neville but both went on to successful careers in lower leagues.

We had already bought in CBs Chris Nicholl and Mike Pickering, as well as Phil Boyer who partnered up with prev. seasons signing Ted MacDougall (for the third time) and also introduced Graham Baker who scored a goal in 42 seconds...

on his MOTD televised debut game. This was the basis of the promotion side in that season..

By the start of season (78-79) we bought in 4 players; only 3 of who, stayed any length of time. Winger Terry Curran (whose only claim to fame was to score the only goal in the 2nd leg SFvLeeds at the Dell - and take us to the League Cup Final.

Goalie Terry Gennoe was better than rated by man,y but suffered a crisis of confidence when dropped by Lawrie Mac and left for Blackburn where he kept goal for 289 apps. (club record).

Finally... we saw ex-Arsenal legend Charlie George play ....4 months after signing for an enormous £400K fee from Derby. (goodness knows what that would be today?) but he never recovered properly from his knee injury and left after only 52 games.

lastly... the one genuine signing that was top class was IVAN GOLAC. Talk to anyone of that generation and you'll hear only superlatives about the Yuglslav who was one of the first foreign signings in the UK. A superb full back who could score goals too.

The following Div 1 season 1979-80 saw the departure of LB David Peach after 278 games... and his still unbroken FL record of 35 successful penalties, and former youth defender Manny Andruszewski who had made an impressive 98 apps.

that seasons new arrivals; were Yugoslav goalie Ivan Katalinic, and (the second of McMeneny's FIVE England captains)... Dave Watson)..and a cheeky young London lad who went on to score 99 goals in over 200 starts ...Steve Moran.

So no one with Prem experience then either?

Another exhorbitant fee,if true.If it happens i would love to be proved wrong.

It is about the going rate for a highly rated young British player. Also consider Wycombe Wanderers will receive a large % which will drive up the price, as will Blackpool's relatively strong financial position.

kieron dyer played 1 game last season!!

That's a lot of minutes in a single season for young Dyer, he never normally gets into double figures. Good solid season for him. Great value for money for club and fans alike.

Has the club ever done anything you don't agree with?

My mates supporting other prem teams agree with that, they is all Spurs and Villa and what not and they found it funny when we spent £7m on a Championship striker "no-one ever heard of". They find the Phillips deal equally amusing!

****s!

When will fans realise this is the going rate when you want to sign a young english talent who is arguably their current clubs best player...

You may also wish to point out a few of said clubs similar transfers....

Villa:

Fabien Delph £8m for a championship midfielder

Matt Lowton £3m for a league one right back

Spurs:

Kyle Walker £3m for a unknown championship right back

Kyle Naughton £5m for an unknown championship right back

Gareth Bale £6m for a pretty unknown championship left back

David Bentley £15million pounds!!!!!!!

Who cares about the fee? This would be a good signing for us, and his future fee will only rise. Yes we still have the memory of administration ringing in our memories, but we're run by a banker now. I think he knows what we can and can't afford. From Wiki: "His most recent position was as an executive at Banque Heritage in Geneva where he managed the finances of billionaires" I think he's best placed to decide we can spend £6 million on a winger that can only improve us.

I think you answered your own question :)

I think NA is best placed to say whether Phillips will improve us and NC is best placed to say whether we can afford him. If NC is putting himself in a position where he alone can say whether a player can improve us, we're back in the scary days of chairman making their own signings.

We have done so badly with the Adkins/Coretese combination so far havn't we? I think we should let them decide how best to use each others strengths and cover weaknesses in the efforts of creating the right team within the right financial structure without telling them who is best to do what!

Great post, but with my pedant head on, Steve Moran isn't from London. Lawrie spotted him playing for Sarisbury Sparks and offered him a new pair of boots if he scored a hat-trick, which he duly did.

Possibly a mix up between Steves namely Messrs Moran and Williams, who was a cheeky chappie from London.

alex_crook: Matt phillips hands in transfer request at #blackpool move to #saintsfc imminent

Reading that article about Phillips from the gazette, it made me wonder if the player who asked holloway why he hadn't answered his calls was in fact Phillips hoping to move a transfer along? Perhaps the fact he was hearing about ourinterest from the player himself is what led to bitter lil Ian's rant about tapping up the other day?

We all know the story, (and he was outside the shop on the following Monday morning with his chit to get his boots...

but in checking I noted that In that Number states he was born in CROYDON . Is that still London?

He surely moved south at some early stage, so I was a bit unsure myself.
