Is it 2 years ago again?

I hope I'm wrong but this summer feels like the summer of two years ago. Lack of signings in key positions ur centre backs, odd decisions on pitch in pre season ie new formations and lots of rumours from start of summer to finish that Adkins and cortese aren't getting on! I really hope I'm wrong as its so exciting And we've had loads of success last two years but this is very worrying at the moment.

What rumours?

Step away from this place. And many are just very excited

Many of my mates in Southampton have no idea what saints web is and they just cannot wait for the start of the season and have no doubt, the club will try its best... If that falls short, then So be it

Dont worry I'm very excited just a bit fearful. Still shelled out on season ticket but have to be realistic and the fact that seaborne is our only centre back cover for me is slightly bizarre.

Do you think that will remain the case.???

We have done more business than most and many deals, as always, will be done on the last day..... That's is nothing new either

Surely the result of that summer of two years ago was a fantastic season and promotion?

True after the sacking of the manager and a bad start. Slightly higher quality league now though. Maybe the players we have will be good enough.

Look, Adkins is a professional football manager and has much more knowledge than us in the game, he will know his team and will know what he needs. I am assume that we had a CB or two on our list but for whatever reason we haven't been able to get them yet. There is no point panic buying a CB, we will wait until our player becomes available. People at the club know what they are doing. Calm down.

Can anyone fish out the preseason comments from last year? I'd imagine people were posting similar stuff then, yet we started well and then we got a great new CB in. Two years ago? Didn't we come second two years ago? I'd take that again.

I went to some matches pre season last year and we looked a lot better IMO. However, pre season means nothing but would like to see 442 rather than seeing jay rod on wing.

You can't write reasoned criticism on here. Either way, we have ages until the end of the window, and many people have guaranteed me that we'll have players in before Man City as well.

NA said acouple of weeks ago that we would have players in before The Man City game, that is looking increasingly unlikely.

Signings depend on so much ie. The player wants to come, the price is acceptable to the selling club, the terms are acceptable to the player et. If there is stalement on any one of these, the deal can end after negotiation falls down. Let us give it a rest now.

Every pre-season it is the same. Some panic and others don't. Those that are panicking start claiming in Adkins we trust, in Cortese we trust, happy clappers etc. Truth is, we got lucky with the centre back cover last season, what an excellent signing that turned out to be! But, we were good enough for the Championship and we never fell out of the top 2 all season! From my point of view, having supported Saints since 1980, that was the best ever season! Consistent, entertaining, dramatic and enjoyable. This season, much the same as last in relation to last, survival! Do we have the right players? Do we need more players? Will Adkins stay, will Cortese sell? But hey, that's Southampton. At the end of the day, this season is going to be one hell of a ride! Buy your ticket and step on board the Saints Roller Coaster, it'll be the biggest and best you've ever been on! We don't even know if it'll stay on the rails!

WOW ..what a well-reasoned arguement Genk.

It almost makes sense, but be careful ...coming on here with positive comments like that only ignites the pessimistic posters.........now you'll be in for tirade of criticism because of your lack of negativity.

Oh I know, and when I raised this point 2 weeks ago I was told I was wetting the bed etc. Turns out I wasn't.

So what if we don't get a CB in by the weekend? If we got one now he probably won't play at te weekend

Sunday's games is one of the "free hits" we have in this league

We are going to get beat no matter who we have anyway

Insert a bit more reason in your criticisms and you'd get less negative reaction.

The trouble is..... the longer we go without signing proven Premiership players, esp defenders, the doubts will grow and a sense that something is not quite right will inevitably flourish.

Yes there well may be a spate of big signings yet to materialise and I am sure the club are working hard irrespective of when the chairman takes his holiday but there is no denying it would have been better to have got them bedded in before the season starts.

I talk to a lot of fans who live in the town etc etc who don't use this forum and there is a growing feeling that things, as they stand, could be better. We are all excited to be back, we are all 100% behind Adkins and what he has achieved but football is a fickle business and right now everyone in their heart of hearts are doubtful the squad we have as of today are capable of staying up.

I think that's a very fair assessment Duncan.

Perhaps, but I do seem to remember the season going rather well two seasons ago...

This place can be a bubble sometimes. A bubble with a black cloud inside it.

Hmm that's not my experience. I've spoken to people who were very positive but are confused by our transfer policy and don't know why we haven't signed more

I agree. JRod is waisted out there, he score a lot of goals last year from a central position and could score quite a few this year from a similar position.

I was excited when we signed him at the thought of him partnering Lambert up front. I don't think that we will see that now!

I don't get that.

Why won't we see it?

Will we play 433 every game

Will j-rod play left side every game?

Will we not play 442/diamond some games

What about sharp and lee?

Sharp and lee aren't in same class.

You mean the summer before we broke loads of club records and finished in the top 2 ? Alright then !

"Very worrying" is a massive overstatement, we've bought potentially good players, we should be able to compete with the bottom 14 if we're able to control possession, and we only have to be better than 3 other teams.

I have slight concerns that we have no depth at CB and the players we do have aren't necessarily up to it, but we're clearly up to somthing in that market judging by the Martin loan and Seaborne loan rumours. Other than that we have a load of players who might be good enough - who are all going to have to be good enough. When you look at Puncheon having had a run with Blackpool and been found wanting but also scoring the odd goal and assist, and consider he's not likely to be starting every week you can see how it's difficult to know where we're going to fit.

We're not going to come second again though.

As who ? As Lambert and Rodriguez ? Rodriguez will become a much better player with a few games against top defenders when he works out what he can and can't do, and Sharp and Lee are already better than our other strikers at some things. It depends what skills we'll need.

Sharp has already shown he can score goals as a lone striker against the odds at Doncaster, it might have been in the Championship but he was obviously a better, fitter, player in May than he was in January and he can create chances for himself. He, and Lee, and Rodriguez, and Lambert all give us different attacking options.

Your oversimplification of pretty much everything is hilarious. Why have a flexible formation which suits the situation when you can (adopts Gumby voice) "PLAY FOUR FOUR TWO" ?

Our 4-3-3 is also a 4-5-1 with the wide men sitting deeper, which when there are 2 DMs is a 4-2-3-1, which with the supporting "in the hole" midfielder replaced by a striker is a 4-4-1-1, which is basically a 4-4-2 anyway. Why not leave the tactics to the people who appreciate that in some matches having 5 midfielders who can win the ball, create and keep the ball but also defend and get behind the ball in numbers might be the way to go, rather than just deciding Lambert +1 standing up front is the only way we can do it ?
