Fitzhugh Fella Posted 10 October, 2012 Author Share Posted 10 October, 2012 (edited) Hmm, interesting. Only problem is will I be able to sneak another Saints book into the house? I wouldn't bother Norm, the author has repeated David Bull's previously published work in the book and it is riddled with errors. David has written to the publishers to compain and they are conducting an inquiry. There are some nice photos in it courtesy of the Mirrors archive but if you want accuracy authenticity originality stick to Hagiology products. What a nasty twisted person Once Bitterne is - gawd knows why people like him continue to conduct a vendetta. I can only think they are people who are frightened that their masters might be threatened. I invite him to contact me (duncan@duncanholley.co.uk) privately and we can sort out all his fears. What are you babbling on about? Nick Illingsworth did a feature on that book on the front page of TUI forum today so thought it might be of interest. http://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/southampton/fb_news.php?storyid=18359&title=new_saints_book_on_the_shelves Funny to see you showing your true colours though! See it as someone muscling in on 'your territory' eh? Books on the history of the club can only be written by your company.... Maybe you can get the union involved? What is it about the word PLAGIARISISM you don't understand Once Bitterne? Also Hagiology is not a company it is a collective of Saints fans who make sure our club's history is properly ie factually documented. Don't understand your reference to the union but I am beginning to see why you seem to be so personal towards me. Is it a political thing? You don't like boat rockers, frightened all will not be so cosy in your little home? For the record for others reading this thread, this is an attractive book because of the Mirror archive of photos but the author has ripped David Bull's previous work off to a grossly unnaceptable level and if you think that's ok then by all means buy it, but in my opinion the author does not deserve reward

You Bolshi old Socialist you! Power to the People! It's a book of pictures FFS! Surely you can understand that as that's what your Commune's effort was. (though maybe that's the point). According to Nick Illingsworth the only text is a 'short' piece explaining each picture. I would take that to mean not a whole lot more than the date and score so unless you believe that information to be solely owned by the Collective than I can't see much scope for plagiarism. Oh, by the way: re: your not knowing the meaning of the word insult, at least I can spell it correctly! Great pensmanship...... So if it's all the same to the Commune, I'll be purchasing a copy of "When Football was Football" for Xmas.

Dig Dig Posted 11 October, 2012 Share Posted 11 October, 2012 I purchased a copy of "When Football was Football" as few weeks ago. It's a must have for any SFC history enthusiast and I would highly recommend it. The pictures are brilliant and the paper quality is unlike any other comparable SFC book which I have seen. The player quotes are particularly good. A captivating read which made me look forward to toilet time for a good few weeks.

Jonnyboy Posted 11 October, 2012 Share Posted 11 October, 2012 Duncan, there was a piece come through the door in the local pamphlet "Discover." The great picture of everyone in ties didnt have the year next to it. When was it? Thanks

What an odd thing to say. I have plenty of Saints books knocking around the house thanks. Last Xmas I was given the one made up of newspapers reports and recently purchased 'A Diary of a Season" from a 2nd hand book shop as I hadn't read it since I got it out from the local library as a chid in the early 80s. I can post a piccie of the book when I get it if that would placate you? Can interviews be plagiarised? It's not as if someone is stealing a story or concept is it? If a politician gives an interview to the BBC and then the words from that interview are then used by the press it's not exactly plagiarism is it? I'm not sure you've got much of a leg to stand on. Have you sought legal advice on this?
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 12 October, 2012 Author Share Posted 12 October, 2012 (edited) . Have you sought legal advice on this? Yes and the Mirror have admitted they need to take advice. The interviews were given privately to an individual ie David Bull. I don't think David would have had a big problem butit appears the author also altered the odd word to make it seem it was his work while making no acknowlegement of David's original. I have no problem people using my research (that is one reason it's there) but it is protocol to have it acknowledged. Also there are quite a few blatant errors in the book ie getting one manager's name badly wrong. Great photos but sloppy journalism. Still I bought a copy. The Mirror are very good to us and let us use their photos (at a price) and I should imagine there are a great many more in their archives as yet unscanned. david in sweden Posted 13 October, 2012 Share Posted 13 October, 2012 The Hagiography books.... are a load of BULL ! David Bull is one of the most-knowledeable and accurate historians on the club's history and especially the post-war period when Saints had the finest team NEVER to get promotion. I've had periodic contact with him, and am always impressed by the depth of his background knowledge about the club, its players and personnel. I'm sure he wouldn't mind younger journos using some info. from his privately-acquired interviews - if only they bothered to check the source properly. It's pretty shoddy work from The Mirror to produce such fine photographic publication but not bother to quote people's names correctly, and even check basic details. Saint Charlie Posted 15 October, 2012 Share Posted 15 October, 2012 Nice to see David Bull having an article published on the OS talking about the career of Albie Roles who passed away aged 91 earlier this month. What price some of this article appearing on the Mirror website tomorrow?
