But surely you everyone knows you arent going to attract the very top talent (even if you have the money) in your first promoted season. Incremental improvement, its hardly radical - though apprarently too complex for some.

Perfectly logical. What isn't logical is banging on about challenging for the title then signing players from te championship.

No it's not. The most likely outcome is we're not prepared to pay for the player over 2 years. Don't believe there is anything underhand in this deal.

I'm not criticising Saints

But if a Club, any Club could offer Euro Football NOW, the player would opt for that

And if a player, any player received such info from any Club, that, in my book is "Tapping up"

Please don't say that you think this never happens.

Buttner couldn't wait to get here .............. but he aint here is he ??

The same thing COULD happen to Ramirez

Man U did their deal QUICKLY, that's the key

In future, we MUST get our man quickly, before other vultures hone in on the carcass of failed negotiations

Ok, let's just take a breather here for a second.

I think a hell of a lot is being lost in translation here, it's easy for things to sound ''certain'' when it's not in translation.

Let's basically go through what we know for sure.

1 - the player wants to join saints

2 - we have agreed contract length and terms with the player

3 - Bolonga want 15m euro's

4 - There is a discrepancy how we pay the money, in terms of over a period of time

5 - Spurs and Liverpool have signed (or are looking at) alternative targets

6 - Gaston has all but burnt bridges at Bolonga, they are looking at alternative players and want to reinvest the money

All in all - I don't think much has changed today. As we edge nearer the window we will get a clearer picture. It's clear that Bolonga are mucking around a bit as they are in the strong position at the moment, but as we get closer to the end of the window you have to think that we have the stronger hand. They have no better offers, the player wants to go and they want the money.

Nothing is decided either way yet, let's wait and see.

Has anyone thought about why the deal may be dead? We know the deal is roughly €15m but the argument is how to pay it.

It's been reported we have offered €8m up front but they probably want more upfront.

Could it be that we don't have the physical cash to pay €10m+ upfront?

M'lud may I present Exhibit 'A' for the perusal of those jury members who have already decided the outcome of the trial!!

The Dutch talksport football bloke was on H & J this afternoon. He was asked about Buttner, "is he a good player for Man Utd" the reply was "Ummmmmmmmmmmm, I dont want to run the guy down"

Then went on to say "his "dream" move was Southampton, everybody here is surprised he ended up and Manchester". Guy was then asked "why did the Southampton deal fall through", replied "there were too many fingers in the pie, and they walked away. FIFA are all over international transfers and Vitesse Arnhem have been warned before" Dont know what this meant or what was implied, but defo said it fell through because we walked away.

Then said that he has been told he will have to play in the res for a year, while Utd work on his game, but he heard that from his father as the Man Utd machine had clicked into gear and he was not allowed to say anything, until he's unvieled. Which he thought would be Fri. Then said "you can normally tell which Dutch players will do well in England". One of H & J then said "well we can make out what you think of him".

What's also not logical is holding a chairman to ransom against everything he says. A side from the fact that I think he only said that top 10 would be the aim this season, most chairmen bang on about Europe, ambition, doing more than just surviving etc. Difference is, most mong fans have a sense of realism and don't let it get to them like some do.

Can you please point me in the direction of where NC says challenging for the title this season? I thought it was aspirational as and when we get a balance of home grown talent and new signings myself

7 - The remainder goes to Penarol.

8 - He drinks ice tea.

9 - His agent drinks coffee.

10 - They were surprised to see a wild pony eating the flowers in the hotel garden.

People moaning about now getting the deal done quickly are of their head. Cortese will try and do whats best for the club, but when we try and sign someone, the players club and agent will do whats best for them, ie. get the most money and best deal at the best club. Buttner was happy to sign but as said in the talk sport interview, too many complications meant Cortese didnt like the deal so walked away. The agent is the same with Ramirez this time, he has a deal in principle with saints but will try and promote his player to a bigger club and more money if possible before the saints deal is signed, the same is said for Bolgna who will wait as long as possible to see if they can get a better deal else where or for Saints to panic and accpet Bolgna's demands.

Even with all this talk, it could be speculation and we could just be being used by club, player and agent to get interest from 'bigger' clubs, with no intention of signing for us.

Hope it goes through and we sign at least one CB before 31st!

Read above. "We walked away" presumably when people wanting a piece of the action started popping out of the woodwork. COrtese is not the type to tolerate that. I was fairly convinced that the deal was dead when I first heard that. I don't believe that Utd had anything to do with the deal failing - it was dead in the water anyway.

You really can't take your eye of this one! Spend a couple of hours doing some of that, oh, what's it called...... oh yes. Work. And now on return things have completely swung back around again.

I do love football, the eternal soap opera.

Game over.

Southampton froze Ramirez pass

MILAN, 21 (ANSA) - Pass the Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez was congleado Southampton after Bologna again rejected the payment terms offered by the English club.

The President returned to Italy Albano Guaraldi "empty handed" after rejecting the payment of 15 million euros would cost the signing.

Bologna's position is determined by the arrangement at the time of transfer Ramirez signed with Penarol and requires payment of 30 percent of that figure to Uruguayan club and his agent, plus 5 percent for the call "solidarity fund "for intercontinental passes.

Southampton would have remained firm in his proposal to settle the transaction in four installments (the first immediate and certain consistency), which ran into the president's refusal expressed as Guaraldi, when missing a few days to close the Italian book of passes . YXG / ACZ

Does anyone else, admittedly myself included. Feel like a ***** for checking this every 2minutes to see if a man has signed for us?

That is valuable red tube time!

Yep but it is complicated given we have to sign Skacel first, in order to include him in a swap + cash deal

We have to face facts. His club, his agent and him, have no loyalty to saints. If his club can squeeze a few more euros out of us, then that's best for them. How would we feel if NC took the first offer for a player without trying to get extra for us. The extra will obviously trickle down to the agent, and if they can get a Spurs or Liverpool involved then thats better for him. Whether we like it or not, they are bigger clubs. His agent will have other clients and will also want future clients, to move a player onto a Spurs or Liverpool will look better on the agents CV when approching other players. I'm sure the player himself would rather sign for Liverpool or Spurs, in exactly the same way I'm sure Phillips would rather sign for us than Wigan.

At the end of the day the only person involved in the whole thing who has saints best interest at heart is NC, we should trust him to do what he can to get the deal done, but some things will be out of his hands. The days of locking players in rooms until they sign are long gone.

And Nixon still thinks it'll go through! He must have some pretty decent information as every other piece of info is against him at this moment in time!

@reluctantnicko: @Jayrodfan2 @danbsfc Bologna want a sale. U want to buy him. Players seems fine with terms. It's called 'negotiation.'

@reluctantnicko: @danbsfc Deals go on like this all the time. Don't stress. Let Bologna guy and his bank manager think what 12m means ... and wait for call.

@reluctantnicko: @Jayrodfan2 @danbsfc It's what clubs do. Leak there's a snag. Hope for interest. Maybe expect a few more quid. Yawn ....
