But surely this should have been agreed prior to talking to the player. NC has worked in banking for a long time, so knows that cash is king, so would not have left negotiations short unless we had not agreed a fee.

Agree it could still happen, but considering that NC seems quite stubborn, I can see him refusing to be bullied to pay what he doesn't want to (even if that is not too much for Saints).

You can only talk to the player if given permission by the club. Bologna granted that as we said we would be preprared to broker a deal. That is what we are trying to do now.

Would you rather Cortese did all the hours of negiotation with Bologna and then Ramirez said "oh, I have no interest in joining Southampton".

Very naive...to know he is interested and its worth continuing with you have to talk terms...

"Star" names want Clubs who are in a Euro Cup Competition

.......... Saints are not in one

So, back to CCC, League 1 and 2 "hopefuls"

What an irrelevant comment. The player wants in but we can afford him as an upfront fee without doing a Pompey. Use your brain.

I think people are pretty calm to be honest, I think there is just slight frustration that this would be sucha big signing and statement of intent that has been sold to us, but we cannot get the deal done. Cortese isn't a football man, and I do think this is starting to show.

Why do you say silly things like this when there is every chance you'll have to back peddle very soon?

You've been relatively quiet on here recently in comparison to how you have been over the last few weeks and now you're back all over this at first sign of trouble, sharing with us once more all your pearls of wisdom. Very strange.

Looking at nixons tweets to other people, he still seems extremely confident of the deal going ahead. Reckons bologna are using their pals in the italian media to hike up the price, which is nothing unusual.

Still hopeful here

According to https://twitter.com/DL_corriere; "Sport columnist Corriere di Bologna - Crossover™ #basketball #virtus #fortitudo #bolognafc #nba"

#ramirez the pretenders are 1)southampton 2)tottenham 3)liverpool..the spurs are back on the deal but #bolognafc chairman keeps the position

@Saintady saints are still in pole position but the matter is 'how' to pay. i guess it will be a problem also for other clubs

@HarryStokes_93 you are right. the matter is bolognafc wants 10 of 15mln now, saints want to pay 15mln in 3 years

No, of course not, but we blatantly weren't prepared to broker a deal to the extent that Bologna want as we haven't. We must have known how much was wanted (approximately) and the terms of payment. If we didn't then that is an extremeley stupid way to do business. That's like me going to a car showroom, saying I am interested in an Audi R8, taking it for a test drive, adding in all my optional extras and then saying "I'm only prepared to pay over 10 years."

Because it has been said many a time that we are difficult to deal with by agents, by not doing things in the 'normal' manner. Couple this with the deals for Jemal, Rosenior, Phillips and Ward. Don't hear about other clubs having these problems do you?

Are you saying there are hardly any other ongoing transfer sagas in the world... apart from at Saints? Arsenal have one every summer, it's becoming tradition.

From Alan Nixon:

@reluctantnicko: @pimpin4rizeal Your bid is the best about. Bolgona want to sell. Player contract is good. Usual fannying goes on. But looking good.

@reluctantnicko: @d9scott @pimpin4rizeal Probably trying to squeeze a bit more cash out of Southampton. Either up front or altogether. It happens. No panic

What have I said there that is untrue though? Even if the deal went through I still think we're being held back in the transfer market as he isn't a 'football' man.

No, as in problems where transfers fall through regularly through 'strange' situations.

What is wrong with some of you lot? A meltdown just because unconfirmed media reports a transfer is off? Utter madness! If it happens, it happens, great! If not then no dramas I'm sure we have other targets. Personally I'd rather a deal didn't go ahead if it wasn't financially right for us, you only have to take a peek down the M27 to see want the alternative scenario can look like.

In any case Alan Nixon seems to think it's still a goer

Quite possibly the single most laughable comment I have ever seen here.

To clarify - signing a player for approx 4 times our transfer record before this summer, who many on here would say would be the best signing of their lifetime is considered being held back?

I would say it is the total opposite.

Or it could be they have a big sign up saying interest free credit available, then while you are doing the deal, someone else asks about the same car and the salesman suddenly pulls the plug on the credit and asks for an extra £500.

We just don't know the details.

So you don't feel we have had any transfers held back by NC in his tenure here then?

Posted

Look. We can't have it both ways ..point the finger at Portsmouth ,then spend money haven't got ourselves.

None of us know the details of just how much we have available ,or whether Bologna have moved the goalposts mid negotiations , etc, , but I do know I'd rather risk relegation than going bust. So there has to be some point at which we say "no, too much".

I'm as disappointed as anyone else if this really has fallen through, but I'll live.

Posted
Not sure why people are pointing the finger at Cortese, not even the big clubs pay all fees up front, it's structured. If they are trying to hold us to ransom he's quite right to hold his ground. We may only have a certain amount of usable funds to spend before then end of September and don't want to spend it all on one player

Very True.

Prefer the old way we found players, like Marion Pahars, Ronnie Eklund, Berkovic ect. Time our scouting network found some gems.

Just itai mind games - horses for courses if you do business with them. Plenty still to play for.

Dominos, it seems, is the closest some on here have come to anything italian.

The interesting thing is the last sentence. The correct (accurate)translation is

"that in the transfer market you never know".

Elsewhere in that supposed article (that i cannot find in the gazzetta online btw) is the revealing comment that " the two parties (meaning saints and bologna) remain VERY CLOSE. Also that Ramirez is going to be an unhappy as he was positive about the deal we offered.

Its not over. This smells of finessing the deal. As supposedly "reported" they want a substantial up front and the rest in one year, the Penarol bit is not discussed. Its NOT the price we are haggling over- its teh payment terms. That is usually the last thing after the basic price principle has been agreed. IF we have access to the substantial amount requested up front i don't think NC will walk away.

MY real fear is that this will flush out thh likes of tottenham or a. n other club...maybe milan for instance seeing as they just let cassano go...

Shame we didn't still have Pulis. Could have offered him as part of the deal.;)

This is the latest from Gazzetto dello Sport that i can find published- its from 21.17 last night....

http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Squadre/Bologna/

The agent doing the deal ( and according to the reports "representing us" is not Nicola - its a guy called Vogorelli and he is also flogging his boy Gabbiadini as the lined up replacement for ramirez to Bologna so i think he is on double bubble and highly motivated...

At that point there was still no deal, todays "news" sounds like a deliberate leak....im still trying to put together the pieces of whats really happening though via Italy....

Harry is a football man Cortese is a businessman I know which one i would want on this deal!

Just look 18 miles east to see what a football man can do to a club when he is given licence to spend.

It's interesting to listen to some of the early season stuff spouted from manager's mouths.

I bet there is not one manager in any division who, when asked the question, says: "Actually, I'm more than happy with every player I've got, I don't need any more."

Every manager will always want more players. It's not in their nature (or remit) to give a tinker's cuss about the financial implications. In the self-centered, coccooned world of self-styled Football People, that's somebody else's responsibility.

Disagree. Cortese was offered the CEO position at Milan a few years ago. I doubt that would've happened if he lacked credibility. Well he certainly doesn't in Italy anyway

You're just specualting and it's all on the assumption that some how, NC is the problem. What if we did agree with Bologna in principle that we would pay 15M over 3 years and then they came back and said they want it over 2 years instead? This seems to be the case. Should NC just pay it, even if it doesn't fit in with what our remaining budget might be?

Why would NC be the issue here?

You just get the feeling that this whole deal seemed a bit too good to be true. Sounds like the deal is off

But it doesn't though does it? Media reports are conflicting at best, certain articles on reputed Italian sites cannot now be found, and Nixon, who has been spot on with other Saints deals, is still v confident. At worst I would say 50/50 at the moment.

Posted

Ultimately, if we get this deal, great, if not, so be it, as long as we get a top class CB (or two) and a nippy winger (and a GK, and a LB and.......)

Posted
Yes, but that is one side of the spectrum to the other. We have a choice to have a non bent football man in there.

we dont need a football man now they help choose the player that is done! we now need a hard nosed businessman to make sure we are not screwed and you wont get better than Cortese!

If there is a deal to be done he will do it if not move on! Bologna are hoping to get a better deal from someone else well good luck to them as they need money now and time is ticking!

This is a difficult deal to conclude with 4 parties in it and anyone starting from scratch will have a hard time doing it in the days remaining and Cortese knows that well

Posted

50-50 I would say also but fully trusting behind Cortese's motivations which are the best interests of the club.

I know one thing, we won't go as far as we might with anyone else at the helm. Nobody...

Use yours

Do you disagree that "Star" players want to play in Europe

Buttner now will, and so will Ramirez when he goes to one of the Top Four

Or can't you see how things work in Football "transfers" Players are ALWAYS after the best deal for THEM

Load of Boll*cks that " I really want to play for "..... " " ie, I really want to play in Europe for MegaBucks

Nothing new in that

Posted

At the end of the day the player, Bolonga and most importantly Cortese want this deal and all sides are probably pushing each other very hard. We're all very close and is just a question of who caves in.

But the main thing is NC wants this player. I fully believe this will happen.

Posted
Stop fretting everybody! Christ. It's not dead. He's said he wants to come. We clearly want him.

Buttner said that as well, but changed his mind pretty quick when Man U came calling

Posted

I suppose what hasn't helped os that bunch of cheating skate b*st*rds down the road went bust owing Bologna money. They probably don't trust any English clubs any more!
