I'm not worried, it looks like a great signing but I wouldn't lose sleep if we failed with it. All the whispers seem promising but I for one won't believe it's definite until it's announced by the club and Bologna and Penarol. As I said before Buttner was reported in the press as a done deal and it wasn't. The way football is these days I wouldn't put it past a player like Ramirez making the wages we have offered public to let his other suitors know what he'll be happy with should they fancy coming back in with another offer.

Some managers and chairmen can be so knee jerk with their signings. That's why I was gutted Liverpool started the season so badly. I am half expecting a late bid from them. Suarez obviously wants his mate there.

True - you never know til its signed - thats why we need to get it done ASAP and sounds like Cortese is trying to do that today.

Liverpool fans on Twitter still hopeful of signing him, and they might have an interest now Sahin looks to be off to Arsenal.

Unfortunately for much of testerday's match the 'hole' seemed to be situated in CM.

No surprise though as we were obviously going to be on the back foot. Lallana isn't disciplined enough to play CM and with JWP only being 17, I wouldn't want to rely on him despite him being very impressive. Cant see Hammond or Chaplow getting much of a game and also wouldnt be surprised if atleast one of them went before the end of the transfer window.

Lallana isn't being played as a CM though - where did you get that idea from?

By watching the friendlies and watching the game yesterday.

He's playing 'in the hole' - v.different from Morgan, Cork, JWP and Davis who have greater defensive responsibilities.

No he isn't. We played like this yesterday...

               K.Davis

Clyne Fonte Hooiveld Fox

            Schneiderlin

      Ward-Prowse Lallana

Puncheon Rodriguez

              Do Prado

Like we have throughout pre-season. If Lallana were playing "in the hole", you can't really call it a 433 can you? Schneiderlin sits very deep as the holding midfielder just in front of the centre backs, Ward-Prowse and Lallana in front of him and are expected to support the central striker, but the main formation is still as shown above.

according to Mark Lawrenson there is no way Ramirez will sign for us. "Definitely Won't Happen"....

Now more than ever I want iot to happen, so we can post the clip back...

Didn't Lawerenson say he would run naked down Bristol high street if Richard Dryden was in the Saints team at the end of the season? He was and Lawro bottled it.

Well that doesn't tally with what NA or Crosby have been saying- they have spoken about moving Lallana to give him more freedom. JWP and Lallana aren't doing the same job as you imply. If anything JWP is more akin to Morgan and has greater defensive responsibilities.

Crosby said to get him on the ball more. Playing him in the centre gets him more involved.

What it does tie in with is watching our games this summer, in friendlies and yesterday.

Yesterday (as he has most of the summer), Schneiderlin sat alot deeper than the other central midfielders. He is the holding midfielder, then he had Lallana and Ward-Prowse in front of him who are expected to both defend and also break forward to support the striker and wide players. What you describe is not a 433, Adkins even refers to the system we have been using as 433.

I've come on here to see if there's any news on Ramirez and all I've got is you trying to get the last word about where Lallana plays.

Odd you picked up for this, but not the posts I was responding to...

If it bothers you that much, put me on your ignore list and stop complaining.

It was quite clearly referrign to the whole conversation, not just you, and yours was the most recent reply, hence the quote. I wouldn't get so precious. It was a valid point.

So back to Ramirez, it seems all that has happened is that we're back to where we would've been had the player not said anything in the first place, i.e. there is lots going on in the background that none of us know about and we just need to wait and see.

Modern technology must be responsible for hours of lost work!

Once upon a time the first time you heard or knew anything about new players was when they signed. Now with the internet virtually every nose wipe is reported and takes up too much time!

IF ONLY I COULD IGNORE IT!

Lallana was doing a hell of a lot of defending yesterday, far more than he was doing on the ball.

Sorry Minty, I think on the whole you seem quite good at inserting some calming words and realism into some of the arguments on here, but this time you may have got it wrong. Read very much to me like he was having a pop at MLG when there were more voices than just his involved in the discussion, mine included.

I know it's a pain when threads go off topic but no need for people to get aggressive when pointing it out.

Actually, reading it back you're right, I misread the bit about 'the last word' but here I am taking it even more off-topic by replying so I'll stop being a hypocrite now and leave it!!! :D

So has the italian press mentioned anything today? I don't know how some people find the links to the stories !!

From La Gazzetta Dello Sport (fairly reputable) at 11:05 this morning:

"11.05 — Situazione Ramirez. (Nicola Zanarini)"

Roughly:

"Situation Ramirez: Decision time for the sale of Gaston Ramirez. The President of Bologna, Guaraldi, interrupted his holidays in Sardinia to fly to Southampton with [delegate] Zanzi, where they met the player's Uruguayan agent, Bentancourt. To close the deal the English club must immediately pay €15 million or pay a balloon payment and then another €5-7 million within a specified time. The negotiations should be successful, the player will earn €10 million over four years. (Nicola Zanarini)"

Clearly advanced talks...in everyones interest to get it done. Tomorrow will be key - the longer it goes unsigned after tomorrow the less likely it is I reckon.

With the player already aligned it all hinges on whether we can agree with Bologna and Penarol.

TBH, I will be mightily disappointed if he is unveiled as a Liverpool player in a few day's time after they agree a deal for a million euro more.

Gazzumped by Man U ... (Buttner), and it now looks likely, Gazzumped by Liverpool .... (Ramirez)

Just goes to show that, outside of Southampton, just how low down the pecking order BIG signings are for PL Newcomers

Reckon it will all be done and dusted before the end of day.
