so........we're not up to it - right ? all you moaners!

....can't attract really quality platers, eh ?

still, he's only a " cheapie" for a mere £11.8 mill. ...right ?

never again underestimate the pulling power of Don Cortese !

When his signature has dried on the contract, THEN I will agree with you

Going to try and dig re: the EU passport issue.

Italian sides are allowed two non-EU players (See here - this is NOT Ramirez: http://fedenerazzurra.com/2012/08/14/no-eu-passport-for-pereira-if-signed-he-would-occupy-one-of-two-available-non-eu-spots/) , so if Bologna have more than 2 non-EU players there's something to build on.

Amusingly I just googled "Gaston Ramirez Passport" and my response in this thread was the top hit.

Flight from Bologna arriving at around 2pm - 2:15pm at Gatwick. By the time he gets down here. 4:30pm ish. Medical takes about an hour or so. 6pm ish. Press shots and interviews take about 30 mins to an hour. So around 6:45pm - 7pm ish. Could possibly be announced late tonight. Who knows?

For people asking how good he is...

I went to the GB v Uruguay game and he was excellent. Their stand out player and everything that was good generally came from him!

Can't believe we even went in for him, let alone look likely to sign him. Definately the biggest signing since I have supported Saints (1990). He basically kept Bologna up last season and ended up pushing them to 9th. Obviously some players struggle to adapt to English football - but he has been superb in Italian football (a hard league with lots of hard challenges) and we play a style of football that should suit him. For example if Stoke City signed him I would say it would be the biggest waste of money in the history of football.

COYR, please please pull this off!

I've never doubted we could attract bigger name players, what I've doubted is the will to do so. Adkins likes having a certain mould of player to work with and the pretence is that we're "sustainable".

I suspect he'll be getting a private jet from wherever to Southampton. It's not like we don't know someone who's got one.

He might have signed before 12 today but he wont have his work permit yet anyways

I don't think the work permit is any problem as he's been playing in Italy ..(and is a current international) but international clearances seem to take time.

How many Spanish speakers do we have in the club?......Gazza is Argentinian, so there's one. Did Adam L. ever learn any Spanish at home or...?

of course Fonte and Guly are Brazilians and speak Portuguese..which is a bIt different to Spanish .I know ..but WTH .......football has an international language - right?

Haven't seen this link posted, few more quotes from the horse's mouth.

Good find :

Serie A is set to lose another of its budding talents after Bologna reportedly accepted a €15m bid from Southampton for Gaston Ramirez.

The Uruguayan fantasista has been paired with the likes of Roma, Inter, Udinese, Juventus, Fiorentina and Liverpool over the last 12 months.

However, it seems that the attacking midfielder will move to Southampton after the newly promoted side beat Tottenham for his signature.

“They believe in me in every way,” the player told the Corriere dello Sport. “And above all I have said that they are going to grow.

“Southampton is a newly promoted team in the English top flight, but they have the means to stand tall in a few years. And with me they are going to build.

“It’s all very stimulating – even if it is a little strange.”

On holiday this week I think

Which, ironically, will make it easy to identify him for anyone at SFC who is wondering who the mysterious THEVMAN who is ITK on Saintsweb is.

Can't be many people involved with the first team who would go away this week :uhoh:

I don't think THEVMAN works for Saints, doesn't he just know Lallana?

Bologna currently have 5 Uruguayans and 1 Brazilian who are clearly not born in the EU, so there's a good chance at least 4 of them have EU Passports...

Already did this one earlier in the thread. Also, Italy have a 2 non-EU player regulation and have 5 Uruguayans so there's a good chance he's got a Spanish passport. I'm trying to find confirmation though.

You've misinterpreted this. Italian clubs are allowed to sign two non-EU players from outside of Italy every season. The fact that he's not occupying one of these spots is irrelevant, it applies on a season by season basis. Gaston Ramirez does not yet qualify for an EU passport, so will require a work permit. However, given his potential and international caps, this will be a formality.

Non-EU at Bologna :

Henry Giminez

Gaston Ramirez

Diego Perez

Federico Rodriguez

Abero - definitely has an Italian passport : http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2012/07/19/3252744/bologna-swoop-for-nacional-defender-abero

Carvalho -also has dual nationality : http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/?action=read&id=326513

So 2 from

Henry Giminez

Gaston Ramirez

Diego Perez

Federico Rodriguez

must have EU country passports. And Perez was at Monaco before he joined Bologna...

EDIT : See below, seems they can SIGN 2 a season, it's not about squad composition. Oh well.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Oh well, balls. How do you know he's not got an EU passport btw?

He only has 9 caps, so we'll at least need to appeal the work permit application even though he's at the #2 rated nation at the moment, which is a bit crappy. As we recall from signing Guly, the FIGC take forever with the paperwork too.

Italian teams can buy 2 non EU per season, no restrictions on how many they can have in their squad...for example they could of brought in 6 over the last 3 seasons.

“I know that it is not official yet, even if it is the right offer for Bologna,” the 21-year-old told Sky Sport Italia. “There are just a few details missing with Bologna for my transfer to the Saints.

“They tracked me with more intensity than the other clubs and that struck me. An agreement was reached with my agent and I’m ready to fly out for my medical.”

A host of European giants were being linked with the former Penarol man and his choice of new club will be ranked as a shock.

“Every player wants to aim for the top, but they have promised me a primary role in their plans and that is important,” added the South American.

“I’m young and I need to play – that is the only way to keep growing.”

Italian clubs such as Inter and Juventus have been paired with him in the past. “I would have wanted to stay in Italy, but this is football,” he explained.

“Today’s situation shows that there is no money in Italy and a change of air for me was inevitable.

“Inter? There was nothing official. Southampton were the club who decided to sign me and I’m happy that I’ll be going there.”

Sounds as close to being done as it can be, without the pen on the paper.

If Gaston Ramirez greets Bologna and already talking about a player of Southampton, the company does not give up. Indeed. The line is clear, those "details to be" spoken Ramirez are important. So much so that the position of Bologna is clear: for the way things are now, Ramirez does not move. Despite his statements and his head now already the Premier. The amount proposed to Bologna from Southampton is considered not yet fully satisfactory, as well as the three-year payment is not pleasing to the club president Guaraldi. The Bologna so do not give up: the agreement is not fully achieved. And the tug of war goes on ...
