Gaston Ramirez- Bologna to Southampton- £14 million

With the ink seemingly about to dry on this one it is easy to see way-and this is meant with the greatest of respect to Southampton- there is an element of surprise to this move. Ramirez has been coveted by a whole host of Europe’s elite; he has everything to his game. His elegant playing style is a joy to watch, his intelligence when in possession belies his age (21), and his all round technique is fantastic. In a world where the diminutive playmaker is now all the rage, at 6ft Ramirez is far more physically imposing, which would stand him in good stead should he move to a more laboriously demanding league. Whilst the success rate of players moving from Italy to England over the past decade is far from impressive, those that do go on to impress are generally not players who have come up through the Italian youth system, but rather made their name in Serie A before moving to the Premiership.

8.5/10 (Chances of it happening today)

He sounds perfect :)

Will Gartson be the biggest Transfer of this window?

Not sure where to start with this?! Gartson?!

Hazard was something like £32M, RVP £24M so no, not by a long way.

BBC sport now saying Bologna are after Gilardino...

"Only two players currently still active in Italy have scored more goals than the 30-year-old throughout his career in Serie A"

Quiz time then, who are they?

Guess Del P doesn't count from today so Inzaghi? and... is Crespo still around?

The window closes at 6pm in Italy so they want Ramirez wrapped up ASAP I would imagine.

Must admit he sounds very much like a Mousa Dembele type player, tall, imposing, very very good technically, scores goals, creates goals. Exactly the sort of force we need from the midfield and wide areas. As you said, sounds perfect!

That is just for transfers of Italian based players to Italian clubs. Saints can still sign Italian based players after the domestic Italian window closes.

Yes I know but if they want Gilardino then they will need the funds from us prior to their deadline at 6.

Ooh, that's a good one.

Ibrahimovic I'd go for.

I assume this has been posted already:

talian football expert James Horncastle: "Raising an eyebrow or two in Italy are reports that Bologna are seeking to take the 2006 World Cup and 2007 Champions League winning striker Alberto Gilardino on loan from Genoa for €1.5m with an option to make the deal permanent for a further €5m once the window opens again in January.

Would this be there replacement for Gaston?

Is Totti still playing? One's got to be Di Natale

Reports coming in that Southampton have completed the signing of Gaston Ramirez, waiting on confirmation. #TheSaints #DeadlineDay

Probably got that from the Bologna Twitter feed then. Sounds promising anyway

To stop this well managed thread going off topic I went to Wiki...

Well done to those that said Di Natale and Totti.

List includes all time scorers so won't put them all up, here's a sample:

No. 1 Silvio Piola (1929 - 1954) 274 goals

No. 5 Totti 215 goals (still playing)

No. 6 Baggio 205 goals

No. 8 Signori and Del Piero 188 goals

No. 10 Batistuta 184 goals

No. 16 Inzaghi (only just retired in 2012 apparently or at least he's left Serie A so I wasn't far off with one of my guesses!)

No. 21 Di Natale (still playing) and Crespo (retired from Serie A in 2012)

No. 25 Gilardino (still playing)

Now come on, lets sign Ramirez!!!
